Laycock

Smashed one of the best ruckman in the competition, lets hope he can keep this up :thumbsu:

The reason why Laycock wasn't playing very good in the previous rounds was because he didn't have much game time. He should spend more time in the ruck!!!

Hope he can back that up, as he was fantastic...especially having to shoulder virtually the entire ruck contest throughout the night. Another pre-season uninterrupted could hopefully prove me wrong about him.

What do we do though?

We've clearly got two ruckman that both benefit from being the "main man" and playing the majority of the game in the ruck.

The bonus is we can leave Paddy down back for the time being.

Laycock has improved a lot since 2005. But he still has a long way to go. His performance looked better than it mightve been if he didnt ruck against Paul Johnson and Jeff White. They are one of the worst combinations in the league ATM.

White is third in the comp for hitouts and averages more disposals a game than all other ruckmen in the top ten (for hitouts), excluding Cox.

I don't know why he's so underrated.

Been a very good ruckman for a long time.

Because he has zero physical presence. You'd have just about the perfect ruck if you could merge him and Hille.

Ive always thought he was one of the better ruckmen going around. Unfortunately the exta ruck circle has diminished his career abit since he relied on a long runup, being shorter than most other ruckmen. But around the grounds he almost playes as an extra midfielder.

some people are forgetting the sensational match the laycock produced back a couple of years ago on anzac day. He has always had the ability and potential he just has to get the consistency and after last nights game im sure he will be getting the oppurtunity

Now a question for Longy. Do you still believe we need to trade for another ruckman?

(Refering to another thread. I know it was only one game but he has shown signs that he is capable of playing like that and as they say the bigger guys do take longer to develop)

Why is Laycock playing well such a surprise? He's from the same draft as McIntosh, both top 10 picks, both have shown little before this season, Laycock has had more injuries. Chook has always been able to play and will get better the more games he plays. Great effort to play so well in Hille's absence. Hopefully he can start playing well consistently. Recent signs suggest he might.

Now a question for Longy. Do you still believe we need to trade for another ruckman?

Yes.

For two reasons...

1) Laycock still isn't "there."

One game, a superstar does not make.

2) My want to trade for another ruckman wasn't purely on improving our best 22, it was improving our list as a whole and adding depth. We're not going to win a Premiership with just Hille and Laycock on the list. We need another option to cover us in the case of injuries, suspension, form slumps etc.

If we're going to allow Ryder to develop into a utility, ala Goodes, then we most definately need to get another ruckman and given there doesn't appear to be any great options in this years draft then trading for a young one that has had a couple of years in the system is the best option.

I'll site you this hypothetical.
Let's say Hille was suspended for two weeks rather than one, and Laycock's arm injury last night was a little more serious, to the stage were he was to miss a week.

Would you be happy going into the game with Ryder taking on Blake and Ottens with either Bradley or Bolton giving him a chop out?

Sorry donsman he drove me mental. he had two pets, sydney and richmond, i almost felt sorry for those two as he sort of played ok against them. To give him Simon Madden`s number !!!!! **** me !!!
It's the ruckman's only number
Did anyone have it after Madden before Alessio? I know Alessio handed it to Matty Allan (and it took me 3 quarters to realise it wasn't him!) who handed it to Chook
I like the idea personally

I used to sigh when I see Laycock in the line up. I cringed at the MCG during the Anzac Day match whenever he ended up with the ball.

Sorry Jason. I should have more faith in you.

Well done mate!
Stop loving our players!

But seriously...
Winderlich and now Laycock - both of these guys are fit for the first time they've been at the club. They're doing a lot to vindicate their original drafting, after many people wrote them both off

Well, no, BUT
I wouldn't be happy going in with Johns and Keps as our forward line if Lloyd AND Lucas both were out

I wouldn't be happy with Ryder and Bolton holding up our backline if Fletch AND Mal went out

and all three are entirely hypothetical situations
I don't know what we'd have to gain from trading an already-mature ruckman
I could see the point in taking a draftee this coming year - as Ryder's our only young ruckman, and he plays far above his experience
But we'd have to give something up for a mature ruckman, and I don't think (providing that Laycock becomes a 20-games a year player) that they'd get used too much

For my money:
Laycock starting ruck
Hille bench ruck/chop out KPP
and Ryder in the backline

gives us depth and flexibility - particularly when K Bradley is in the wings as another KPF/ruckman
However, given that - hopefully - Bradley will hold his spot as a forward alone from next season, there's a spot for a third dedicated ruckman. I would prefer a youngster to work in tandem with Paddy, and taking over about 2011 from Hille/Laycock
that's my $0.02 worth

best laid plans...

If Lloyd and Lucas are out we have - Johns, Neagle, Gumbleton, Ryder, Bradley on the list.

We also have Watson that can play tall forward. Lovett, Davey could also play out of the square and for the time being we also have Hird.

If Fletch and Mal are out, we have McPhee, Lee, Ryder, Johns, Bradley and Welsh can play somewhat taller. We could also add Daniher to that and if it's a long term injury, we have Chartres on the rookie list.

If Laycock and Hille are out we have Ryder. And that's it.

I'm not talking about a mature ruckman, I'm talking about a 20-22 y/o ruckman. Someone that is closer to the mark than an 18 y/o. Someone that might only be 12 months away from making the step McIntosh (and Laycock to a lesser extent) has made this season.

Rather than taking a ruckman in a weak draft that is going to be five years away.

We could always promote Mackinnon
