Dunn has stuff to deal with, none of our business. Viney should be a VC given he's an obvious future captain.

Agree. Viney should be VC until Jones retires, then just hand the captaincy to Viney.

I think it will happen before then, think at the least they'll share it.

Some big changes to the group..
N Jones (c)
Tom McDonald
Colin Garland
Max Gawn
Bernie Vince
Jack Viney

Love the eye to the future with Max the only one who has surprised me
I reckon Max is a great choice. He is a natural leader. He was the one who organised the banner for Trengrove when he resumed running. Think he ads balance to in that he's a relaxed guy, whereas Jones, Viney and TMAC are all intense personalities. I love the makeup of that group, they will all lead by example. Agree with previous comments about seeing Nev Jetta and Vandenberg in there soon too.

My off-season conspiracy theory was mostly wrong. I picked Vince in, but failed on others.

Pretty happy with that group. They will lead and are respected. That's what we need.

Also interesting that all bar Vince are Melbourne grown, not imports. A cultural change removing Dawes and Lumumba.

I think the reality is that Dunn will lead anyway, whether he's named or not, that's just the way he is. Then you give the official defense lead to TMac to keep him sweet that he's a crucial part of our set-up going forward and everybody's happy.

I think you've nailed it, there is a really good balance across the group.

Jones is the hard nosed, uncompromising leader, Viney the young gun, a great example for all of the youngsters to try and emulate and McDonald is a the fittest guy on the list, sets the standard on the track. Those three set high standards and hold all others accountable, but that's not all their is to leadership. So you need guys Gawn, the comedian and great clubman, Vince, the ultimate lad, and Garland, quiet and unassuming respected veteran.

All six go very close to covering the major personalities that will make up a team. The rest of the guys will identify with at least one of them, which is what you want from a leadership group as a whole.

The guy spews leadership.

Which gets all over his soup catcher, making it even more magnificently, regally resplendent.

Nah, it may happen before then, but I don't think we'll see co-captains at the MFC again anytime soon.
Didn't Roos have co-captains at Sydney or have I made that up?

My memory was it was Roos's swans had the rotating captaincy, or was that st kilda? Regardless, I just reckon there are 4 or 5 young blokes who'd all be capable of being sole captain by the time Jonesy is done. No need to share it without a real reason. And I reckon Jonesy keeps it for another year or two after this.

I think it would be nice for Jones to keep a share for a bit, he's earned it. Viney should be ready by next season.
Do you mean Jones should share it with Viney as of next season? To be honest, I'd like to see two or three more quality years from JV and a little more time maturing before he gets the gong. Jones should keep it for as long as he wants, though its hard to see him extending beyond the four years he has left anyway.

Until Viney's a bonafide A grade mid Jones should keep the captaincy IMO. Really he should be retiring with it, I'm not sure why this is even a conversation.

Jones isn't a natural leader and Viney is. No need to be gun shy due to past MFC ****-ups. He's as much a leader as anyone going around. He'll probably cement himself as a better player than Jones by the end of the year too.

Somehow Jones is criminally underrated around here. Viney is nowhere near the player Jones is. He still panics by foot, ala Jones 2011 and is a bit overrated due to being hard, likeable and Todd's boy.

If Jones isn't a natural leader then there's no way in hell Viney is. Jones can have the captaincy as long as he damn well pleases.

Swans had three co-captains from 2006-2010 and two co-captains from 2011 through to present.

But Roos finishes this year, so he won't have as much influence on the captaincy in future years any way.
