Least deserving Norm Smith medal winner?

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

In the first half for sure, but he was reasonably well held in the 2nd half and his side lost. After the Buckley Norm Smith they weren't going to give it to a losing player
Buckley absolutely deserved the Norm Smith. And besides, they have given it to a player on the losing side since Buckley (Judd, 2005).

JK was still the best player on the ground IMO, there wasn't any one standout from the Dogs.

JK was miles in front of anyone at halftime. Libba's tagging job on him in the second half never gets the credit it deserves.

I would have picked Tom Boyd for the Normie.
JJ missed a number of targets during the game. If Boyd had of nailed that last shot on goal and finished with 4 majors he probably would have been awarded the medal anyway.

Bont went at 100% by foot that day too. Ridiculously good game.

I think Boyd's game was closer to a really good cameo than a four-quarter BOG. I agree about the Bont; that was a very underrated game from him.

However, I'd still give it to JK, even though the second half didn't match the first. Take JK out of that Swans side and they lose by seven goals IMO.

I think after the Buckley scenario judging panels are very hesitant to award the Normie to a player from the losing side. JK was very good that day though.

Picken gets forgotten.

25 disposals, 3 goals, 5 inside 50s, 4 tackles and several big moments.

Comfortably a better game than JJ.

Boyd's contested marking masterclass gets him 2nd or 3rd - split with JPK.

JJ 4th or 5th IMO, contesting with Bont and Macrae.

There is part in the game where Dusty does a high fend off to Crows player's face.. and their are like 3-4 guys surrounding him trying to take him down, it was bloody epic it should've have been a free kick to the Crows but who cares lol when you see that sort of stuff it makes you appreciate what a god Dusty was at his peak.
Richmond fans really are low IQ…

IMO the only thing that was really controversial about the Buckley scenario is just that the medal was voted on before the game is finished.

However, I believe that Buckley was absolutely the best player on the ground that day, and the fact that his 21 teammates weren't at Brisbane's level doesn't change that.

I just assume that Richmond and Collingwood are like cousins, and are only allowed to marry within the extended family, so Richmond fans always end up marrying Collingwood fans and vise versa, sort of like a bogan Royal family.
Well you’d be incorrect. I’ve been married to a Geelong supporter for 40 years.

He was awarded 'Best Finals Player' in 2016 at our B&F - was very good in all 4 games.

Some thought LRT was unlucky that day, but LRT does not sound fussed.

Thought LRT was very close but No way Judd done enough that day. Having said that it was a mish mash all over the place type of game and although grateful of a first flag in 72 years not great game to be judging individual performances on.

Hodge is the only one who really stands out as least deserving
Which game 2008? 😂 If he wasn't doing he's thing across the game we lose. People keep banging on about Ablett and yes he was good but we don't win if Hodge doesn't put the team on his shoulders, not just about stats its how your impact affects the result of the game.

Dustin Martin in 2020 but for nothing to do with his performance in that GF. It was undeniably BOG.

However I am of the view that every achievement that happened in that uber absurd 2020 mini season shouldn’t be counted. I came to that POV very early and I’m pretty sure many (most?) others did too.

IMO 2020 was far too radically different from a conventional season to be considered legitimate; with R1 played in March and R2 played in June FFS. Not to mention the 20% shorter games with only seventeen H&A contests with a GF held closer to summer than winter … It was just bizarre on so many levels.

FWIW Dylan Buckley said Trent Cotchin told him that he feels that in his time at Richmond that they only genuinely won two flags or perhaps possibly 2.5. If the captain of that team acknowledges 2020 as a faux premiership then the playing performance that was BOG in that GF can’t really be considered a deserving “real” Norm Smith medal. However it was very fortunate that as Dusty was a 2x previous recipient it didn’t result in someone undeserving entering the ranks of official NS winners. Phew.

I disagree. The games still counted, they were still as competitive as any other, and IMO the best team at the end of the year was still awarded the flag. Moreover, all teams still played very much under the same conditions bar, really, Gold Coast and Brisbane.

I understand the sentiment, but every team besides GC and Brisbane had the same obstacles and hardships, so this argument doesn't really wash for anyone but Cats supporters I am guessing ;)

I agree that JPK was best on in the 2016 GF. It was one of the best individual performances you'll ever see. Johannisen was good but he did burn it quite a bit.

Tom Boyd's name gets floated because he's a spud and it was viewed as miraculous that he actually contributed.

Josh J Kennedy had 18 disposals, 11 marks and 3 goals in 2018
Jack Riewoldt had 6 contested marks and kicked 5 goals in 2019
Bailey Fritsch kicked 6 goals in 2021 etc. etc.

But nobody gives a shit or talks about these games because it wasn't a shock that these guys produced the goods.

And I would wager that if Geelong had won you would have a vastly different opinion.

I live in QLD, went to a lot of the games, and apart from the small crowds, it didn't feel like a Mickey Mouse season or a facsimile of a Grand Final. The season absolutely counted, and I say that as a Cats fan who was there.
