Not as bad as the fallout if Port Adelaide don't win it. They are top of the ladder three games and percentage clear, after finishing top last year and very high the year before.
Teams placed 2nd-8th are dead even on points - its a wide open field.

Still the second youngest team in the competition. The fallout for Port, Bris, Ess or the Camry Crows would be greater than the other four teams who have a chance to set up their lists for long, sustained tilts at finals series year after year.
Admittedly, the fallout for the pies would be bigger than swans dockers or eagles. But, at the mid season break I would never have dreamt that we'd be sitting second with a round of footy left to play.

I'd have thought the Bombers fit more comfortably into the latter category. Most of their important players are still in their mid-years, football-wise (players like Lucas, Lloyd, Rioli etc) or are still fairly young and have a lot of potential improvement in them (Ramanaskus, Cupido, McVeigh, Jacobs, Solomon, Hille, Welsh etc). Even the likes of Misiti and Fletcher are only in their late-20s and could easily play top football for another few years.
Probably the only real question mark over a star player is Hird, and that's more due to the battering his body has taken. Mercuri won't last much longer but his impact has been minimal anyway this year.
I'm not a Bombers fan by any stretch but they seem to be in a very different phase to 1999-2001 already. Maybe not next year, but the year after I can see them being a serious threat to the flag, unfortunately.
Collingwood.. Could not handle it, would have to leave the country!

Essendons list is the same age as collingwoods 22.3 years. Essendon will be a better team next year than this year.
Essendon rely more heavily on their older players (Lloyd, Hird, Fletcher, Mercuri, Misiti, Wellman) than Collingwood do (Burns, Buckley, Wakelin).
Medium term Essendon have a bigger replacement program ahead while Collingwood will only have 2-3 retirements of senior players in the next few years.

Lloyd only turned 25 this year. Mercuri has done jack **** since 2000. Misiti has been average. Wellman and fletch did not play last week and we still won by 12 goals. so to say we rely on these players heavily is not true.

All those guys are now established and will carry essendon forward.
Finished: Joey, alessio and mercs as well as barnard have not contributed for a long time. Although joey misiti has played some good footy at times.
