Leigh Brown replacement 2012?

If Dawes leaves we may well talk Leroy into sticking around for another year playing out of the Goal Square.

Would be happy to give Hansen a chance.

Played his best footy as a defender but still has plenty of potential as a forward/second ruck IMO. Although I wouldn't be shocked if he never reaches great heights as I thought he would have shown a bit more by now.

Would be reuniting him with his Gippsland mates Daisy, Pendles etc which could be exactly what he needs to perform.

Remembering back:
When you got him, Brown was a big, slow, completely un-loved spud of a tall, of no fixed position, unloved by two sides, and universally viewed as being pretty lucky to get a gig... if you want a legit "Leigh Brown replacement":
the one you'd go after is Kosi.

(Personally I think your best bet is to actually use 2 proper rucks; you've got two at the same time for the first time I can remember in 15+ years)

Stanley definitely worth a look. A lot of toe for a big man and completely overshadowed by Riewoldt / Koschitzche love.
Stanley is Tristan Walker mach 2, absolute shit box.

Complete athlete who has not a single iota of football smarts

This gets really interesting if Dawes isn't around next year.

My initial feeling is that the club may try and nurse Jolly through the year in a similar way to Geelong with Ottens. Wood used as the primary ruck for much of the year and Jolly used as the Leigh Brown type with Dawes filling the role on games that Jolly is rested.

If Dawes was to leave we would almost certainly need another mature age ruck (despite having Ceglar and Witts on the list) unless the club feel one of the kids is AFL ready.

Whilst I see your point Stanley is a fair better athlete then Walker was, Walker didn't have the pace on the lead Stanley has which is a weapon for a forward. Stanley also has better dukes.

Stanley is softer and not as strong though

I disagree about the dukes, walker whilst being nothing else was a decent enough mark. Walker also had the better leap or at least used it more

What about going for Kosi from saints. Has had no luck at st kilda. Injuries and lack of confidance has marred him. Is a good forward and I think a better ruckman. Get him over and let buffiant work his magic. Could be both the answer for brown and if we loose dawes to carlton.

As sad as it sounds, the other day I actually dreamt about the Pies getting him in trade week. Have absolutely potted and thought very little of him his whole career to be honest. But the more I think about it as a second ruck (third tall forward) I am starting to warm to the idea. Particuarly as a result of his trade value being as low as it has ever been combined with Leighroy retiring. Somebody please tell me I'm not thinking straight...

I like the idea too. He's much better than Cam Wood and on talent better than Leigh Brown at both rucking and playing key position forward. If we can get him for our 2nd rounder (pick 44) or a young fringe player like John McCarthy I think it would be good value for the next 2-3 years.

One thing going against Kosi is that when Buckley was a commentator on channel 7 he certainly wasn't a fan of Kosi and his lack of awareness. I wouldn't be totally against it if the club thought it was a good idea, but I'm thinking it's very unlikely.

Here's an interesting one - David Hille? could have 2-3 more years left him in to fill the void until witts n stuff become good, essendon will be wanting to play bellchambers and ryder next year as well so will come cheap and offers a fairly good ruckmen (better than brown) and a better forward than brown.

I think Hille would be lucky to play 30 or 35 more games, be very surprised to see him go around past 2013 based off this year.

Maybe wood/ceglar/witts could be ready to be good ruckmen ina year and a half, would be a pretty good temporary fix to try and nab the 2012 premiership.

Hille's better than Wood (and I'm assuming the unseen younger guys as well), for the present, but I'm not sure it'd really be value for you guys unless you really don't rate Wood.

Personally I'd be very happy to get Hille, even if it was only for a year.

Has good physical size and skills and would provide Leroy or Leroy-plus second ruck cover and resting forward presence.

Maybe Wood, Witts or Ceglar may be ready thereafter- though the latter two may be two years away.

Wood is getting closer to an option, but still have significant doubts about him, despite showing some more promising signs in past few months.

the problem with wood is his not a good mark, he doesnt go at the ball hard, lacks speed and agility relative to his height. I would prefer to get someone else but his all we have atm depth wise whilst our other ruckmen are so young.

You obviously havent been watching him this year. He has made rapid improvement in all these departments.

In 2012 we will have two genuine ruckmen and 2-3 young development players. We may need a harder body as depth but Wood is more than capable of holding down the senior ruck position if Jolly gets injured. I still like the Minson option. Has all the attributes we need...youngish, hard at the ball, a bit of a forward option, relatively injury free, might improve with some "Arizona" fitness culture embedded, and most of all, cheap.

He's not taking many marks, but he's improved his hardness at the ball. Speed & agility however have never been a problem for him.

He'd be the right 'type' - ruck who goes well around the ground, takes marks back & forward. Whereas Minson/Wood (and what I've read of Ceglar & Witts) are definitely ruck only.
He'd be value for a side who could afford to rotate him in & out and keep him fresh, prolong his career - and I think you could cover that.

Wouldn't mind Hille in the short term, always rated him and still have bad memories of him monstering Fraser in the ruck. The only 'downside' is that he is not as versatile as Brown who can play forward, back or 2nd ruck, but it can be argued that Brown isn't much chop as a defender anyway.

Witts is still very raw and has actually played more of a forward/ruck role in the few VFL matches he has played, and took a few good contested grabs too. Though with his extreme height you'd think he'd be more of a permanent ruck once he develops, though I wouldn't say no to a Paul Salmon V2.0 either ;)
