His missus kinda gave it away earlier this week he would probably end up retiring but it's official on the AFL site now.

Leigh Montagna was a very good player. 287 games and 2 time All Australian whilst finishing top 4 in the St Kilda B&F 9 times in the past 10 seasons. 7th for St Kilda's all time games played list.

Expected to enter the media from here. Well done on your career Leigh.

More likely to be remembered for this

kicking the winner against Melbourne with seconds left.

Would have liked him to get to 300 and a goodbye game - been a very good, very smart player for a very long time! Well done Joey!

Agree 100% I had so much time for him as a footballer before this act of being a smart arse ! Dumb act on his part and he lost all credibility after it. Shame really as he was a good footballer , but this will be his epitaph
lol what
5 billion players have chipped it around the back line to waste time but do it in the goal square cos your team can't defend and it's an act of credibility loss?

The moment I remember most involving Montagna was him kicking the winner against us in 2015. Remember it well because after he kicked the goal I did a Clarko and punched the wall nearly breaking my writing hand when I had an exam the next day lol. Well done for a quality career and good luck to him in the media!

Haha, still salty much?
Next you'll suggest that any player that sells some candy is unsporting because they lied to their opponent.
The only one that reflects badly on is your defence, giving up the chase after having their pants pulled down.

I agree that the bounce and stuff in the goal square was unsportsmanlike, but come on, how can you discredit his whole career because of it?

Get a grip, if you are still disgusted by it you need a good look at the bigger picture of life.

Goodbye Leigh, thank you for the many great memories, us, you and the footy club have shared. Enjoy the commentating gig.

One of the most consistent players of the last decade.

Never quite elite, and didn't stand out physically, but was very good for a long period averaging ~25 possessions over the last decade.

Unfortunately it's the last actions that people remember
Give it a year and ask anyone outside the saints what they remember about him and it will be that incident
Don't matter how good he was , so we're many players but it's the crap people remember

Very good player when the Saints were up and about. Still a handy player when the Saints struggled, but he was a part of that talented core the Saints had which won plenty of games.

I don't believe that what he did was unsportsmanlike in the goal square. Players try hundreds of things to burn time off the clock, yet only this one thing is considered bad? Very hypocritical i reckon.

Yep I remember Goodes for being a flog in his last few seasons rather than a top 10 player this millennium which he undoubtedly is with 2 premierships, 2 Brownlows, 3 B&Fs & 4 AA's and 350+ games

I had genuinely forgot about it. Pretty sure majority of the population (those without massive chips on shoulders) would be in the same boat

Yeah good point
all I remember from allister lynch is being a complete flog in a grand final and trying to bash the crap out of his opponent in his last match
I bet none us remember anything else he achieved

u plonker

So Alastair Lynch is remembered more for going "Punch and Judy" in his last game rather then his 10 year contract or his heroics in your threepeat? Yeah right.

Matthew Lloyd is remembered more for destroying Brad Sewell and being suspended into retirement then his 100 goal seasons and great seasons? Doubt that also.
