Confirmed on SEN. Sad day.
Sportal reports Hawthorn midfielder Angelo Lekkas has announced his retirement.

The 29-year-old, who bravely returned to the Hawks' senior side for the last nine games of the season after suffering a mild stroke during a February practice match, told a media conference at Glenferrie Oval on Wednesday that he had lost the desire to continue at the top level.

He ends his career with 180 games to his name and with his reputation cemented as one of the Hawks' most inspiring players of recent years after having debuted with the club way back in 1996.

Lekkas twice finished in the top three in the Hawks' best and fairest, finishing third in 2002 and second in 2003 and was also a member of the club's 1999 pre-season premiership side as well as representing Australia against Ireland in 2002.

Thanks for the memories, Ang.

Always gave 100% - on the field, and off. Hope you can stay on at the club in some capacity, as your comeback this year was nothing short of inspirational.

A more courageous player you would be hard pressed to find.

Sad day for the Hawthorn Football Club. :(

Will miss the number 37 guernsey on the training track, and on the field of battle.

All the best for the future. Health is far more important than anything else in this life.

Great career Lekka, we'll miss your class on the field, and will not forget the sensational 2002 and 2003 seasons you gave us..

Well done, what a comeback so brave, could have easily retired during the season but worked hard and gave it all. Very good career, was a goalkicker when played forward and a hard runner in the midfield. Was very important for the club. Will miss him next year in our team. Good luck for the future with your health and future aspirations.

One thing, will we reinstate a delisted player now or get Kirkby back or use it in the PSD?

Definitely a great player in my memories. Great recovery to play a few more last games for the hawks. I think he made the right decision. Good luck to him in the future.

I wasn't expecting that at all.... he's going to be a big loss for a number of reasons. Top person, good leader, needed some experience next year... but or course the decision is totally understandable.
