Leppa's third year.

Our problem is once a coach gets a feel for his players we move him on. And what's the point in that? Stability is the key, on and off the field. Leppa needs at least 5 years to see if he can make it. And I'm sure he is the sort of man who would walk away after that if he felt he could not achieve success.

Bulldogs and Saints are looking good after a couple of chaotic coach sackings.

And that's your theory how you start winning games. Hold on ,we did it with Vossy. So Leppa should work.

If the club doesn't think Leppa is any good they shouldn't be afraid to replace him.

It doesn't matter anyway they seem like they're happy to back his long term plan and the fact we'll start playing decent footy eventually.

Of course we'll start playing decent footy....when we get all our players back from injury. What the hell did you expect Leppa to do with the injury list we've had?

I personally don't feel like injury has defined his tenure as coach. Even with a full list, I doubt we would have won too many more games.

I'd count Magpies (Hanley), Suns, Saints, Giants, Crows and Freo as all potential wins without a 20+ person injury list for a couple of them. Obviously we can't just say we'd have won them all but I think we would've snagged a fair few of them.

Judge him at the end of next year.
He has been dealt a pretty tough time this year.
Our boys look a pretty united bunch.reckon we are on the right track.

Rocky off fairly early for the Pies match too, and I think that is a meaningful point.

Rocky (as an AA mid last year) surely would be in the conversation of our most influential (if not best) players. For mine, Beams is probably the guy now, but it was always going to take him a little while to really hit his groove at a new club. If it wasn't Rocky, then probably Hanley would've been the next candidate.

Take Fyfe out of Fremantle's season and would they still be 12-1? Alternatively, take Pendlebury out of Collingwood, Murphy out of the Dogs, Mumford out of GWS (good case study)...

These teams might still have notched wins (clearly Freo would've), but I doubt as many as they have. The impact of missing one or more of your best players can be dramatic, especially for a young side.

I know people don't like excuses, but it is what it is. We've been short two of our best few players for most of the season, and loads of other important supporting cast members for equally long.

Not to mention Ablett at the Suns!

Happy with this year all things considered, I don't think any question marks should be raised at this point.

The idea behind the thread was under the assumption, we all know this year is hard to judge, but what about next year at the same stage?

Efforts like yesterday give us hope, but that is with our 'we expect to be flogged' hats on. At what point does a 40 point loss become unacceptable?

It is such a unique situation its so hard to tell.

I think we will lose to the swans by 50+ points next week, and then I think we will beat Melbourne the week after.

Understand your point, theoretically no 40pt loss should be acceptable but we had become such an inexperienced squad on the field. A young and inexperienced team that continually swaps and changes it's squad on the field will always struggle for consistency. A more mature and experienced squad that has also learned the coaches game plans over say a half dozen years tend to be able to cover change with fewer issues.

I think this is why we also tend to improve towards the end of a season - in both of Leppa's first two seasons our average final score differential has been lower in the last 11 rounds than the first 11 - and the 2015 first 11 rounds lower than 2014 - the concern for me has been [for whatever reason] no continual improvement from the end of the previous year. In our 10 worst/greatest losing margins in Leppa's time only 2 of them have been in the last 11 games of a season.

  • My first KPI for Leppa in the last half of 2015 would be for the team not to have a 10 goal+ defeat/blow-out.
  • From the end of 2015 would be an expectation of some sort of carry over of form into 2016.
  • Would love for at least a 50/50 win/loss ratio in the first 10 games of 2016. If this was not achieved at least the team to record the lowest first half of the year points differential - only needs to better -27.09pts which was from 2013 [2015 and 2014 were 38.7 and 39.8 points respectively]

It's been a good discussion with lots of quality posts. Well done for starting in and keeping it (generally) on track

Hearing on Twitter (yes, Twitter) that Paine and Golby will be delisted? No surprises if true.

Golby, Paine, Staker, Maguire and O'Brien to be the five cut from the list at season's end I think.

From a reliable source? I'd be surprised if even those players knew yet. In fact, I'd be surprised if the final decisions had been made yet.

Hardly reliable. Just the "talk". Sounds like this person had a chat with Paine or close with someone that knows him.

twitter - the new facebook? Now there's a surprise, NOT!

Why anyone would want to use Twitter is beyond me, it's a cesspool of disgusting filth.

Golby and Paine were just the ones listed on the AFL site the other day when they were guessing all of the club's possible de listings and trades. Having said that, they do look the most likely to go at this stage, perhaps with McGuane as well.

You'd think with Staker, Maguire and McGuane probably finished and Merrett being on his last legs, Paine would be handy at least for depth. Unless Leppa seriously doesn't rate him.
