Let’s forget for a second their ridiculously arrogant antic's after scoring a goal in a prelim...

There is something to be said for developing/ Showing faith in your own players and picking up highly skillful underperforming players for budget prices. Rodan and Motlop are who I am referring to of course.

Seems to be the complete opposite to our strategy of late. (Headland,Carr and to a less extent Tarrant at the peak of their value).

I am not saying they have been a disaster for us..but it is food for though.

Could a case be made for having a crack at Sampi, Ray or Wells?

Sometimes when you bring new young talent into a team, it revitalises the club. They don't give a rats ass about culture, reputations and what the media says. They just get out there and play. The experienced players take the example set and do the same and take their game to a higher level.

There was a lesson in the last game of our year. While we didn't win, I reckon we did a lot better than we would have done had the same old blokes been out there.

Bottom line is that Port needed an injection of youth. They got it, and the results speak for themselves. We need the same. Maybe not Sampi, but someone like Ray might provide part of that injection.

Wells won't be available.

Sampi... nah, I think we need to clean up our own backyard and get our own club culture right before we start taking other people's needy rubbish.

Ray - well that appears a possibility... but not if we have to sell the farm for him. Port traded for Motlop - a fair trade, but didn't pay too much... and were the only ones to take a punt on Rodan with pick 86 or whatever it was. Every other club passed on him - so good luck to him and Port.

I'd love to think we could unearth someone by throwing them a lifeline with the very last pick in the draft... but that is hardly an exacting science. More like "one powerball" type luck IMO. Rodan didn't have the personal issues that Sampi has / has had; so we can't even really compare them in that regard.

Ray is the only possible one - and we'd have to give up a decent player or at least a second round pick to get him.

Like Moo said in another thread - under no circumstances should our first and scond round picks be used in any deals this trade period (unless they are packaged to get us a higher pick).

Sampi isnt a lost cause but he's not worth it for you guys.

Ray will cost you a first rounder, not exactly cheap.

yes showed that a side needs more than spirit(kangas) to get to the last saturday in sept- need skilful talent(port and cats), at least one good ruckman some fast midfielders who know when and how to use the ball.

The kangas have been flogged in 3 of their last 4 finals appearances- they can deliver during the season on the so called shineboner spirit but if your lacking real talent your pushing it up hill

Port's recruiting has been second to none over the last few years.

More so the the development than recruiting I would have thought.

Motlop, Mahoney & Rodan were considered duds and let go or overlooked.

Don't forget they had at least half a team of premiership players our there today.

What's wrong with showing raw passion and excitement? maybe that is one of the hidden factors that we have at the moment!!

I agree. Most "knowledgable" people had them finishing outside the 8 - and there they were pantsing their opposition in a PF booking their place in the Grannie. Much respect Port. :thumbsu:

Yeah, development is first class too, but you need good recruiting to identify talent when all other clubs overlook it. eg. Surjan, Pettigrew, Pearce, Rodan etc.

It is a bit of both prbably , We must be doing alright in the recruitement area as well.

Sandi
M.J.
Rodger
Crowls
Groves
Thornton
Foster

We just have to up the development a tad.

Needs to be remebered that we gave Port a huge leg up by passing on Troy Chaplin in 03 and going left field to select Spud. Chaplin has been great this year.

Bit harsh Sabre , We would love it if it was us doing the celebrating.

It is the sort of arrogance you need to be successfull.

Don't listen to what bare bum Wallsie had to say, He well and truly showed his bias today.

The arrogance is born from a successful footy culture at Port Adelaide(SANFL) into the AFL side.

Also they must be doing something rigth with Clarkson and Bailey getting Head coaching jobs and Hardwick(prem player at Port) now in the mix for Bummers job.

Walls is a tosser.

Crikey! that is the first time I have heard someone (anyone) say that in four years.

Well I'm not surprised, it would be stupid to judge the decision before giving the players at least 3 years to prove their worth. But after this time Chaplin is by far the better player. Have to say Smart got this one wrong. Murphy was considered an early second round pick at best, most likely mid to late second round but he took him at 12.

Medhurst's best is as good if not better than Sampi's best. Troy Longmuir >> Sampi at present.

Ray probably wouldn't come that cheaply.

Laidley said that they aren't speaking to Judd because the eagles would want Hansen or Wells + draft picks and he wouldn't trade either of those players in a straight swap for Judd. Hypothetically, if Wells was out of contract and wanted to come home they'd want 2 x first round picks.

Yep Chaplin is nearly as good as Mundy and M.J.

Success starts at the supporter base , We will never get anywhere while we reckon the "grass is always greener".

We just have to run what we brung.

What does that mean? Are you suggesting that everytime someone posts on an internet forum that we should have drafted this guy instead of that guy, or player x is crap, or our coach is no good it contributes to us losing games of footy?
