This is the one memorial day worth recognising, imo.

With the number of books, articles, feature films, mini series and documentaries abroad about Gallipoli, Kokoda et al, the likelihood of being able to forget is fairly minimal I would have thought. Still, I suppose this industry employs lots of people, and twice a year gives some a warm, fuzzy feeling, as if they're doing something meaningful.

To all those that have fallen, may we never forget your sacrifices for our nation. May we never repeat the mistakes of the past and look towards a more peaceful tomorrow.

May we have the courage to stand up to those willing to trade human lives for financial gain and aim towards a world of peace, love and understanding.

I like Armistice day because it memorialises the end of WW1 and it isn't able to be co-opte into some nationalist myth, because it is an international day. That makes it worth something to me.

And yet you can't even get it right. It's the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. Did you stand up in front of your monitor for a minutes silence at 11 minutes past 11, 10 minutes after everyone else had continued on with their business?

100 years is a long time ago now. Is there a limit on how far back you need to pay attention to. Yes it is extremely sad that they rushed off and became cannon fodder for mother England, but WW1 was a ridiculous conflict with no clear aggressor. I also admire the conscientious objectors who didn't buy into the vehement anti-German propaganda.
