100 years is a long time ago now. Is there a limit on how far back you need to pay attention to. Yes it is extremely sad that they rushed off and became cannon fodder for mother England, but WW1 was a ridiculous conflict with no clear aggressor. I also admire the conscientious objectors who didn't buy into the vehement anti-German propaganda.

As an individual, it is your duty to serve your nation whether you agree with the reasons for war or not. If your country asks you to fight, you fight.

As an individual it is your duty to... um.... give up your individuality for the state!

ROFL! :D

My above statement is especially true in a nation like Australia where people have it so easy. Those conscientious objectors during the Vietnam war were pond scum. And before you try and give me another one of your delusional history lessons and make excuses for people with no honour or spine, don't bother.

What a bullshit idea of national duty. If the government decides to launch a full-scale take-over of NZ suddenly and arbitrarily, I'm obliged to serve despite the obviously questionable moral character of the war?

So the diggers fighting in WWI and WWII were fascists?

They chose to, cam doesn't want to offer that kind of freedom. If the diggers espoused the belief that cam displayed towards others, I'd suggest they are venturing towards fascist elements. I think if a state espoused beliefs such as that I'd be somewhat Fascist, it's why this country must oppose conscription in all it's forms.

But that's what motivated the diggers to fight.

In some cases. It's not the whole picture, though.

And don't get me wrong - risking your life out of a sense of duty to defend your community is a noble and brave thing to do.

But there's a difference between that, and saying "You have to fight when your country tells you to, because your country tells you to."

Hmmm. Do you think Muhammed Ali is pond scum?

Really, I'd like to know

Obviously the world was a different place back then. Many of the soldiers who left to fight during WW1 left for adventure and to prove themselves. Few had any idea exactly what they were getting themselves in for. Many also left for reasons of national duty though. They were proud of their country and saw their mother country had fallen under attack. They wanted to do all that Australia could to defend their country of origin. Many still saw themselves as British.

Today, it is very unlikely that our country should fall under attack, or feel the need to request people to fight for any purpose, but should this happen, rest assured it will be for a very good reason. Should this ever happen, it would be your duty as an Australian citizen to stand up and be counted. To run and hide and be a conscienceous objector is showing disrespect to those who have fought and died before you. We stand here today enjoying all the freedoms and liberties that those dead men and women gave us.

Although we have a small input, it is not so much up to you as an individual to decide what is good for your country - your country will decide what is good for you.

My opinion of Ali would have been a lot higher had he gone to Vietnam. You can't expect a punch drunk fool to make rational decisions though. He was but a puppet, with powerful people pulling his strings. Tell me one group in Australia currently though who have similar grounds to refuse to fight? Tell me who in Australia could honestly think they have as rough end of the stick as African Americans in this time period? Answer to the rhetorical question - nobody.

Well I don't think conscripting blokes and sending them to Vietnam to participate in the slaughter of 2 million civilians really contributed to Australian freedoms.

Let alone those naive / adventure seeking teenagers who volunteered for WW1.

Fair point.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing when questioning the reasons for a nation sending troops into battle.
