Griff will be offered a good contract from the Saints. They have the cap space to overpay him early, he is exactly what they need and they can get him for nothing in the PSD, and can probably guarantee him game time in his preferred position.

From what I've heard this is very possible what will happen and it might mean we lose him for only a 3rd round pick, if other clubs don't become involved. If we are going to lose him then I'd prefer it to be something like that than lose him via the PSD for nothing. I would hope that if we were losing him to the Saints we might try something where we offer Griffiths and our 3rd round pick for their second pick instead of going with just a 3rd round pick.

In summary, Saints get Griffiths and 3 picks inside the top 45-50 of the draft and we get 3 picks inside the top 30 for losing a KPF we've put 5 years into. Everybody wins in that regard albeit reluctantly on our behalf.

If you were the Saints and could get him for nothing via PSD would you give anything up for him? I wouldn't. The only way we would get anything for him if StKilda are his preferred destination is if they have a bigger fish they are hoping to get via the PSD.

To keep a good relationship between the club moving forward I would hope that a win win deal could be reached. Most clubs, with the exception of the druggos at Tullamarine, are happy to give up something decent to get something decent in return rather than force the PSD angle. All that does is create bad blood between the clubs and make things difficult for trading down the track.

You'd like to think we could offer him a bit more than he is worth right now to help us keep him. We should be clearing out some dead-wood coin this season and next.... Also the cap is increasing. How much more are they likely to be paying? What would he be on now? 175-200k? If we offered an increase of 50k a season or maybe 75k a season that would put the emphasis back on him to repay the faith wouldn't it? If the Saints offered him 400k or so that would be irresponsible of us to match it...

You mean like how we offered the druggos a third rounder for Houli, they wanted a second rounder and we took him in the PSD?

I looked at what similar type players went for when thinking about what Griffiths should be worth.
Hampson cost pick 32
Crameri cost pick 26
Graham cost pick 40
Hickey cost 13 37 & 57 for 26 & 47 going with him
Longer & 48 cost picks 25 & 41
Warnock & 69 got 24 56 & 72 back
Mumford to Sydney cost pick 28

Sure the PSD threat is there but I'd hope that the Saints would make a fair deal rather than go down the route of take crap or we'll PSD him. Like I said earlier Griffiths and our 3rd for their second gives both teams a win out of the deal.
