Let's clear one thing up.

Was the final high contact free kick to Shuey...

The point is to understand how we feel about it. We lost because that decision was paid. It's very relevant to the process of getting over what happened.
We didn't lose because that decision was paid. We lost because of the last 12 months of terrible football/terrible decisions.

If you need to pinpoint that to one moment - I don't think this is it.

I'm not going to get over what happened, I don't want to get over what happened. Being ok or accepting of one umpiring decision ain't going to change that.

Doesn't matter.

Correct call as that's what the umpires paid. Like Jonas missing or numerous frees both ways. We should be livid it was a free and livid none of our players could kick straight.

Dixon carried us. Kicked 3.6 but where was literally anyone else in the forward line.

One decision cost us but the decision to leave it to one decision cost us most.

I for one would like to pinpoint it to the Dixon play-on which cost us a home QF against Richmond.

And if Sam Gray had kicked a point instead of kicking out on the full, we might have won by a point and avoided going into overtime. We could beat ourselves up over any one of a myriad of things, but the bottom line is that we didn't take our chances when they were presented to us, which is why we're now entering Mad Monday.

It's not beating ourselves up over anything. There is indeed a myriad of reasons why we lost but the most direct is the free kick leading to the after the siren goal. I think it was fair. We lost fairly and squarely.

If we don't believe it was fair, what are we gonna do about it? Push the AFL, the umpiring department?

That's the thing. What we do about it to do better next time.

Can I change my vote to 'Incorrect, but consistent with other decisions'? Video that Coobk001 posted clearly shows why it shouldn't have been paid.

I think this is the correct assessment. Clearly not a free kick based on the way the new interpretation is worded but you still see Selwood, Shuey and whoever else paid multiple frees like that each and every week so this wasn't some kind of one off interpretation.

Goal kicking at Adelaide Oval is a major issue I think. Including tonight's game, we kicked 185:175 from 360 shots in Adelaide, at just over 51% (obviously that doesn't include the shots that didn't register a score). If we want to make our home ground the fortress that it SHOULD be, surely that conversion rate needs to be closer to 60%, or even higher. Nothing puts an opposition team under more duress than scoreboard pressure, and kicking point after point doesn't cut it in the modern game.

Apparently we work on this a lot...

I would suggest work is the wrong word cause whatever we are doing isn't working.

Mind you, we also kicked 139:131 away from home (also at just over 51%), so clearly it's an issue wherever we go - with the occasional exception. Maybe the fact that we lead to the pockets so often is a contributing factor. Footy is a simple game if you do the basics effectively - are we over complicating things too much?

We are definitely over complicating things, combined with not really doing proper set shot practise, and not valuing goal kickers enough. When was the last time you heard a coach praise one of our players for accurate goal kicking? There's no incentive or repercussion for it.

Apart from Dixon's 5 in Perth (5:1 wasn't it), we didn't have too many notable hauls this year. I don't count Sam Gray's 6 against witches hats in round 23. Hopefully Marshall will develop next year, giving us a potent 2 pronged attack up forward. Plus who knows what diamond we may pick up in the off season?

Clubs in the current era push goal kicking spread and scoring through the middle, but this finals series so far has emphasised dominance of proper forwards in good positions kicking them. Dixon both nearly won and maybe lost the game tonight off his own boot for instance.

How is this even a thread. It's obvious if you look at the rules. Clearly not a free, just because a couple of protected brothers get paid them every time doesn't make it right.

They specificly said they wouldn't pay this kind of free this year but they pay it every week.

It's so hard to spot though. When a campaigner like Sicily or McLean throws his head back in the tackle you can clearly see it from 100 metres away, but the subtlety of what Shuey did would be near impossible to pick up with a split second decision. It's easy for us to watch a slow motion replay and call out the mistake, but I must admit that my first impression at the ground is that the free was 100% there. I can understand why the umpire thought the same, even if with the benefit of hindsight he was incorrect.

the story of our life

It clearly wasn't a free. The umpires will admit their mistake during the week.

The tackle was fair and Shuey shrugged to make it high, that's exactly what the new interpretation is supposed to ignore.

There's no real debate in that, it is fact.

However, it doesn't matter. I aint mad at the last call. I'm mad at our inability to take all our chances when they did take theirs.

Watching the repay - i change my vote - NO FREE
