Lets focus on the positive

Positives:

1 - Our endeavour and pressure for most of the game.
2 - Barham - great tenacious performance and neat disposal mostly
3 - Sidebottom - great debut, clean hands, good disposal had a few moments but it was a very high pressure game. Surprised at how quickly he adjusted to the pace.
4 - Pendlebury - still all class on a quiet night for him. He is becoming consistent.
5 - Maxwell - Great attitude and on-field leadership. Was filthy at a few early turnovers but he really redeemed himself.
6 - Rocca - Tried his arse off with no match fitness. Much maligned but he showed a presence (and didn't get injured :D)
7 - Wellingham - showed a better attitude which is encouraging, had too many brain farts though.
8 - L Brown - NAH just joking the guys a hack.........

Slim pickings this week.

Just about got them all there, you missed one I reckon;

8. Nathan Brown; Kositchzke actually didnt even kick a goal on him. Only goal the big dud kicked was on Leigh Brown.

Im really sick of the way people on this board jump all over collingwood when we have a loss like that, "sack the coach", "He's VFL standard" blah blah blah

The fact is we are still a developing side, look at Maxwell he's our captain and one of our senior players yet tonight was his 100th game!!!!

Geelong and St.kilda if you remember went through the same stages and were critisized for not living up to their potential.

If you compared the total number of games played by St.kilda and collingwood boys on the field last night Im certain you would get a big suprise.... eg: Macaffer, Barham, sidebottom, stanley, toovey, wellingham etc

The fact is the St.Kilda midfield is all around the average age of 25-26 (apart from Hayes) if anyone saw the interview with Bruce at half time. Now compare that to our boys!!!

Geelong are the same, their players are around the mid 20's meaning their bodies are maturer, our boys looked like kids out there with very little size especially in the midfield.

And for god sake can we please lay off Stanley... Ablett i recall wasn't too great in his early stages, not saying Stanley is of ABlett material however we can't expect this kid to produce the same stuff he does at VFL.... He needs time!!!

Good to see that Mick was pleased with Steele too.

Basically saying we've found another keeper in that injury article.

Steele Sidebottom

Found the ball 22 possessions in a flogging, made a few mistakes but was overall very good. Still needs to add some bulk, however all in all was a very good debut. Looks to be a player for the future.
There were none! It was a disgraceful performance. End of story!

Cheers Matty :thumbsu: Agree about N Brown has been alot better the last couple of weeks. He's still not quite himself yet though. Doesn't have the same swagger and confidence but definitely better. Could have looked worse though had Kosi kicked straight.

Dude your whinging about the whingers in the positive thread :confused:

There are always positives, even in a flogging like that. Steele's debut was one of them.

Agreed - Sidebottom's performance was a genuine positive from last night.

For me the test for any young player is always, "Do they look like they belong?' - the answer for me is a clear yes.

Showed great poise and class and he certainly attracts the ball.

I'll take your three kicks and raise you his job on Goddard which he failed at, plus Goddard set up their second goal with no Toovey in sight. He manned up Dal Santo for a brief time but was moved when Dal caught fire. And to finish off his big night, he coughed up 2 late goals to Schneider in the last quarter. And yet you had him in our best BASED ON WHAT???
I'm glad someone was watching, Martin Blake in today's Age article noticed how DalSanto destroyed the 'close checking' Toovey.

So his night consisted of playing on Goddard, well beaten and moved,

Onto Dal Santo, destroyed and moved back into the back six where,

He conceeded goals and gave us zero drive out of the back half.

Yep he was one of our better players.

Toovey is an interesting player

Some days his tagging is very good other days he gets slaughtered.
I think the tag needs to be exactly right for him for it to work ie same size, same speed, same marking ability etc.

I'm not sure where he is at, but I think a position on the list is still up for grabs, well at least until Jaxson gets better at it, then Toovey might be in real trouble

Good news on Cox at least:
"Unfortunately Coxy looked like he sustained a pretty serious leg injury in the first quarter and went to hospital. Fortunately scans revealed it was bone bruising and will be right this week."

was very very happy with Steele. Real highlight for me. Thought his work in close was very good...a few mistakes of course but every player made those last night.

He threw himself into a few tackles...but i think you could see he was not used to the bigger bodies of AFL. Was totally brushed aside. But to his credit he worked harder than most, and put his head over it.

He'll have a great game next week and win the rising star.

Positives. To come in to the side-
JMac, Beamer, Dids, Medders, Leeeoooooooon, Jack, Rus and Hopefully Wood(in good form).

WTF's wrong with Trav this year, light years from his Copeland form.

They (Bruce, Bucks, Leigh) actually spoke about that last night, hinted that his confidence was down due to the Sunshine Coast incident.

I like those 'ins' we really missed those gun forwards.
Plus I am a big fan of Beams and JMac both the type of mids we desperately need.

wow, sounds like the Richmond board less the infighting.

getting beaten by 88 points is a f'ing disgrace. If they have improved that much over us from last year then we're not moving in the right direction.

We were missing a couple of good small forwards and a midfielder. That shouldn't be any justification for getting flogged like weak bitches.

I thought N Brown had a good game. He started the season terribly but it seems he is working into it. Agreed that most of our young mids have average disposal and can't believe people are complimenting Barham's game. See what Montagna did to him in q1???? He doesn't look out of his depth when the ball's not in his hands but when it is? He's clearly been told not to kick which is good because he clearly can't do it but it's making him question himself and he looks hesitant when handballing.

People are reccommending him as a tagger but these days a tagger needs to be able to hurt a player in the other direction; he wouldn't do that in an under 17s game.

I doubt it, but if that is one of the reasons for his poor form he needs to get over it, it was a good four and a half months ago.
Would it help if a boxing match was arranged for him to regain confidence?
Worked for Howard Moon when he took on this man mountain:

I think there's something to this. When you confront violence it really rocks you. It strips away the veneer of civilization, and it takes time for you to feel secure and normal again. He'll get over it, and will be a stronger person for it. It may be no bad thing for him that he's having a couple of weeks off.

Say'd the same thing Last night Snag Breac,

Maybe he needs a week or 2 in the VFL though it could have put his confidence down even more. No a return through the VFL looks promising. He's definately got it in him like a lot of them so hopefully all comes good.
Maybe this should be another thread but if we are thinking positive I would like to know peoples first 22 if all injuries could be ignored (except Buck's hamstring). I don't think anyone had Beams etc in at the start of the year. There is still hope of a rusling return very soon.
And to all those against Leigh Brown, he's not highly skilled or talented but he gives it his all which could be questionable of some of VFL starters in their last AFL games. Why give it to them on platter.

A round about positive from this is much like Geelong did a couple of years ago the Saints are showing that a group of talanted players can take a while to find the required balance and with the right inclusions click and go from there and there abouts to red hot really quickly. Hopefully we are able to find that balance and work rate and click when our guys get that experince in terms of numbers of games and age etc.

Another positive is that we have the opportunity of smashing Carlton next week and let them know that they were beaten by a side that couldn't get within 14 goals of St Kilda!
