I’ve got an idea that none of you will like :)

One that is so off the wall...so left field...that if you didn’t think I was crazy before, you will now.

Are you ready?

Luke Hodge.

Say what you want about him, but he can read the game like nobody can. Four premierships, captain, campaigner, directs players on the field already, studied under everyone’s supercoach Clarkson...ticks all the boxes.

He’s my pick :P

As an assistant to Schofield, sure.

The sort of ruthless campaigner any team needs. Will have a beer with the blokes but get stuck into them.

He's might be a shit campaigner of a human, but I reckon Hodge could be a good senior coach... in time.
Way too early that though. I could definitely see him as a head coach in 10 years.

I'm willing to take the chance. I reckon he's already been coaching Hawthorn and Brisbane on the field.

The only two positive years of Ken Hinkley's reign so far were the first year when he was a hard ass and the second when he was even more of a hard ass.

As soon as he went soft on the playing group, things went to shit.

You wouldn't get soft with Hodge. You'd get fun, but it would be fun after the work has been done.

As an assistant ? Absolutely.

Whom has silver wear on his mantle piece albeit with the aid of COLA.

Albeit 7 years old. I just don't think we can whinge and moan about playing a defensive game plan and then bring in an even more defensive coach.

It didn't work out well when it was Michael Voss made senior coach out of basically nowhere (maybe two months as an assistant at West Coast?)

Or when it was Tim Watson going from media to St Kilda coach

Hodge wouldn't want to mess up his long term career by jumping for a senior coaching role before he was ready IMO.

Electric.

Hodge is not a terrible idea at all. We just need a massive, gaping arseh*le (in a positive sense) behind the wheel. He might just be that unit.

The difference is that Voss and Watson were purely midfielders. Midfielders follow the ball - they don't see the creation of the play up and down the field and why things happen the way they do. That's why it's important that midfielders get assistant coaching experience so they can look at the game from a holistic viewpoint - e.g Adam Simpson (midfielder for North Melbourne turned midfield coach for Hawthorn turned premiership winning coach for West Coast), Chris Scott (midfielder for Brisbane turned assistant coach for Fremantle turned premiership coach for Geelong). They only need a couple of years before they are ready because of this.

Hodge has played as a captain from half-back. His nickname is The General. I reckon he'd have more of an idea about coaching than most head coaches do.

I would take Luke Hodge as a player right now to help out the absolute panic stricken players we have every close game.
Smart move by Brisbane to help out a young side.

I wa actually thinking Sam Mitchell

Already the successor to Clarkson IMO. That's why he came back from West Coast to the Hawks. He'll never leave Hawthorn.
