Equestrian heads (if there is such a thing) - how good a position are we in for the team event? And in particular how does the scoring work for the jumping?

What I understand is this:
- Each team's best 3 scores of their 4 riders count
- In the jumping you get 4 points for knocking over a fence

Are there any other penalty points? Maybe for time or something?

At the moment it looks like a race in 4 for the medals:
1. Australia 150.3
2. New Zealand 154.8
3. France 161.0
4. Germany 172.8
5. Netherlands 238.6

So it looks to me, pretty uninitiated, like we have a handy gap on France but there's nothing between us and New Zealand. Is that a fair assessment?

I am pretty sure you are correct. However all it takes is a couple of our horses to shit the bed and its all over. It's not match winning but Its the best position to be in.

One thing I do know is that one of our horses didn't get through the cross-country, so we don't have a "fourth score" to drop.

But all the other contenders are in the same boat.

Yeh but one of them is on 90 points... if they have to fall back on that, they are stuffed anyway. So it is still all up to the top 3.

Its a great event. It was a phenomenally hard course. I couldn't believe how many riders struggled. Burtons ride was the stuff of Aussie legends though. The Horse never competed on a 4 star course before let alone one that was as hard as that one. He deserves the gold just on that ride alone.

He was absolutely faultless

Was never really into equestrian until that incredible performance by Gillian Rolton in 1996 when she completed the jumping event after suffering a broken collarbone and broken ribs after a fall. She still won Gold.

After the ride she was taken to hospital and refused pain killing drugs just in case the team needed her the following today to complete the event.

Now THAT is what I call serious nuts and I dip my hat and applaud that level of courage and team ethic.

Weightlifting, handball, volleyball, water polo. All quality Olympic sports to watch.

And at the end of the games my sport - rhythmic gymnastics. I really want to see the groups, but as there are no aussies in that section, I bet it won't be shown and also they will show Danni Prince's routines but my tip is that she is likely to finish last in the individual. I want to see all the top gymnasts but it's highly unlikely.

I've worked out the answer to one of my own questions above - looks like 4 penalty points per fence knocked down and 1 more per second (or part thereof) over 80 seconds.

No half or partial points, so we have 4 points to play with over NZ, 10 over France, and 22 over Germany.

Germany look a fair way back in truth.

I don't really know what I'm watching but the horse just seemed to be ambling around. Looked likely to knock down every fence.

1. France 161.0
2. New Zealand 162.8
3. Australia 167.3
4. Germany 172.8

Not the end of the world. Can still win it. I am guessing we were not wanting to be relying on this horse.

I'm definitely a big fan of rhythmic gymnastics :)
