Nope

Australian politicans are more interested in pandering to the Talkback Radio / One Nation / Redneck type of voter.

This interest in science is purely a passing fad.

Both Labor and Liberal have shown disdain and philistinian contempt for Science in the past.

Why should they change ?

Knowledge Nation is to be commended for its vision and general philosophical direction, BUt really, its the thoughts of Barry Jones, not the wider Labor Party, who are just as rabidly anti-intellectual as the Tories are.

and as we all know the Tories are FEARSOMELY anti-intellectual.

Have you decided whether to stay in Oz or go back to Italy yet Sbagman ?

PS - I would like a science board - seriously !

cheers

BSA,

I'm not sure it is a passing fad in Australia, though I fear the money pumped in might be a passing fad scientifically worldwide. I'm not 100% convinced that the science will bring in the big bikkies that everyone thinks and hopes it will. I'm working/studying at Queensland's flagship of biotechnology, and the Queensland government have pumped in 100 million dollars over the next seven years, and the same amount is being used to construct the building for this institute. $200m is not to be sneezed at. And Victoria is currently trying to wrest the mantle of the biotech capital away from Qld with the bid for the synchotron and a similar institute to ours in Melbourne. So there's a fair bit of money and interest at the state level. Whether that money and interest is sustained, and whether it carries over onto a federal level, is yet to be seen.

As to my personal comings and goings, I have to stay in Brisbane at least until the end of 2002 to finish my PhD before I can think about Italy again, which is something I'm definitely considering, on a semi permanent or permanent basis. This would be a lifestyle based decision though. Going back to Melbourne is an option too, I just spent a weekend there and still feel it is my best option in Australia. The problem for me is that my way back to Italy is through scientific research... something I have lost interest in, due to it being a very isolating, solitary career with little scope for human contact and communication, something I seem to crave.

Thanks for the interest though!

Cheers,
Sbagman.
