Swim, no. But they can move about under water - they're dead, and the dead don't breathe. The zombies in Land of the Dead walked right under the river and attacked Fiddler's Green with ease.

Max Brooks' followup to his survival guide, World War Z, also addresses this.

The worst zombie scenario is the 'no room in hell' scenario.

You dont even have to get bitten.

Die and immediately be reanimated as a bloodthirsty zombie.

Then again, you die and you cease giving a shit. Nothing else matters except the primal urge to feed.

Maybe in that 'survival' situation the living are the unlucky ones!:p

Well this is a disturbing turn of events. Can they navigate well under water or is mainly crossing small bodies of water?

Do they float or sink? If they're not breathing, they'd sink. And if they can't swim, then how do they reach the surface again? So would a boat/cruise boat be completely safe?

Torrenting now.

it's a good show.

The CDC zombie survival guide was really a ploy to get people to read it because it ends with a footnote along the lines of 'these scenarios can be easily applied to all disaster events like earthquakes, tornadoes etc'

They knew mentioning zombies was the only way to get people to read it.

Also I forgot to ask, would they be affected by the pressure underwater.

For instance; If I was to plonk myself on a deserted island on the other side of the Mariana trench & the zombies were coming from Japan, could they cross (assuming they can't swim as I do) the depths & survive?

My immediate assumption is that they would be crushed under the pressure & if they are zombies that can only be killed but destroying the brain, then the pressure would do that also.

So whilst they can find & make their way to remote locations I think I have found a way to make access to me impossible.

I also still do question their ability to find me also. Most zombies follow either: sight, sound or scent. Putting an ocean between you & them will make tracking a difficult task. I also question their ability to navigate.

Cruise boat floating over the trench would be an impossible target.

^^ I agree. They wouldn't be able to withstand the water pressure. A cruise boat would be ideal. I think we have a winner.

Mr Gor, it looks like we've got this zombie apocalypse sorted.

Rather than a cruise ship (depending on numbers of course) but if there is only a few to a few hundred, an air craft carrier might be the better option. You have weapons for defence against other non zombie survivors who have turned to piracy, a large landing strip that could also be used as an area to grow fruit, veg & raise animals. Most also have their own desalinisation plant too so plenty of water on hand & if nuclear powered, endless fuel.

Three problems.

1) Where do we get a functioning Aircraft carrier (and crew) from?

2) Why is this crew letting us (as civilians) on board?

3) With that many crew, the risk of infection is high. The last place Id want to be in the case of a zombie infestation is trapped on a giant ship riddled with zombies in the middle of the open ocean.

Makes for a good movie idea though (dibs).

1. I would imagine that it would be docked in Perl Harbour, that would be my first port of call. Everyone knows that following a zombie apocalypse everyone becomes much more adept at doing things outside the norm so we would pick it up as we go. Also most container ships (even super max) can operate on as little as 20-30 staff.

2. The army/Navy/Air force are dead, if they weren't they would still be fighting the zombie army & trying to keep us safe & things would not have reached 'apocalyptic' proportions yet. Seeing we've established they can't swim all armed forces would be required to fight a land war, they die & become zombies.

3. Those on the ship would have first been quarantined to ensure no infection is transferred & if it is only by contact or death that they become zombies it would quickly become apparent if they had zombie like tendencies.

Sorted

Surely zombies can sail

I would imagine that the "super zombies" would have the dexterity & mental capacity to make it possible to sail, but the typical "sloth" zombie possesses neither. Chances of a super zombie outbreak are very low, that usually requires some form of genetic mutation.

The mistake in thinking that people make seems to cause people so much apprehension when facing the thought of a pending zombie apocalypse. They neither think or act like humans, they are for all intents & purposes sub-human, incapable of rational thought or reason.

They become a purely instinctive creature.

As I have said, I have it sorted, if you have any concerns let me know. I'm here to help make your transition into the zombie epoch as smooth as possible.

If it turns out that a company is manufacturing this zombie apocalypse, then I would probably go looking for Alice.

Solid progress. But getting the aircraft carrier would be the hardest part. Surely they'd be limited. Would have to look for an option closer to home as well. Would lol @ sailing zombies tho

Do zombies ever "die" from hunger or are we going to be on the run forever?

A question I've also wondered too, but it seems that many zombies can only be killed if their bran is destroyed.

^^ yeah I'd agree. We settled on a "reanimated dead" kind of zombie, something that's not living, therefore doesn't breathe or need sustenance to live.

but can possibly sail a boat

I'd grab a few rifles out of the cabinet, head up the Gramps with my pet Puma and never be seen again.

Everything with an output of energy needs input. HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE!

I'm sorry WALL-e but you would die early in the zombie manifestation, you seek to understand what is not logical, to investigate the abnormal.

These are the first to go, you inquisitive nature leads you into a situation that causes certain death.

Please flick you way through earlier post to get a clearer sense of what is required to stay alive.

Following this line of reasoning, the existence of zombies implies the existence of other supernatural entities.

Such as Vampires. And Wizards. And Dungeons and Dragons style Clerics.

Problem solved. We simply need a high level Cleric (preferably with access to the Sun domain) and the Extra turning feat. At least 5 ranks in Knowledge (religion) would help as well.

Should be able to turn or destroy heaps of the undead critters.

Yeah, Im a nerd.
