There is a missing factor. LUCK. Hawthorn were just really lucky for a few drafts and happen to pick highly skilled , natural leaders that really complemented their existing team structure. They were the first to the party with the club culture first philosophy and along with their lucky but also good recruiting, they have become the team to emulate. Geelong were lucky as well with some father son selections that really set them up.
By your avatar, you look like one of the smarter ones.re: thread title.... to avoid disappointment... I would if I were you.
I'm sure that Tuohy and Armfield would be happy to give him a nice hello... after the match after they have knocked the stuffing out of him.We play the Tigers in the season opener again.

Neither team had 4 wins two years in a row, IIRCIf Melbourne and Brisbane cannot get a priority pick, no chance Carlton gets one.

I would hardly call Hawthorn's recruiting "lucky."
They set up that recruiting with hard calls on players that gave them the draft picks that they needed.
Once they had those draft picks they chose players to build a premiership team around - Franklin, Roughead, Rioli, etc.
When their list got stronger they traded for needs - Gunston, etc.
To call it "luck" after continually recruiting the right players year after year is disrespecting the Hawks recruitment team.
As for our lack of luck, well as you pointed out, it was sheer incompetence.
Everyone raves about we should never got rid of Ratten but he was a major reason why our list is in it's current predicament.
Our much maligned recruiters were set to draft Talia who WANTED to be at Carlton because he had always been a Carlton supporter.
We told him that we would pick him if he was still available - and at the last minute Ratten vetoes it and demands Kane f..... Lucas!
We were hell bent on recruiting "athletes" - Hampson, Bower, Lucas, and Bootsma while Hawthorn targeted footballers.
Luck might be needed to win a Premiership but good recruiting sets up 4 premierships and a grand final loss from 8 years, not luck.
Good observation that. I think that that's the way SOS and the rest of the staff are looking at the recruits we pick to play for Carlton. Footballers and not necessarily athletes. Its all about attitude towards the game. Hard and strong at the football. Of course Hawthorn are an example.
What I hope they are building at the club are real footballers who want to be part of a club, put it all out on the line, to make history with the group that is now assembling at the club and starting at the beginning of something I hope is great. It will be all about the culture of the club and not the disenfranchised. The Chris Yarrans and Lachie Henderson's. A clean slate for a new coach. We want players playing with pride for the club. Ratten made the decision to pick the recruits he did, based on talent alone, but now we know that as athletic as a Chris Yarran is its he is not going to be fitting the culture of the club we are now developing. The talent that played so few games for us this year means I agree we should not write off next year. A full season of Walker, Thomas the Cruze and the Irishmen could change it quickly.
We also need to draft people that WANT to be at Carlton.
We don't need any more half a.... flogs like the ones we have gotten rid of over the last few years for disciplinary reasons - Yarran, Menzel, Bootsma, Henderson. You could even include Garlett, Waite, Eddie and Robinson in that lot as well because despite numerous chances they all continued to put their own game ahead of the team and continue with their off-field antics.
That might be generalizing a bit to cover it for the sake of my point but they all had chances to fit into the team culture but decided otherwise. Betts probably less so than the others.
What we need are people like Jack Silvagni who is absolutely jumping out of his skin to play for Carlton.
For anyone who hasn't seen the interview with Silvagni at the draft camp then I highly recommend you google it.
It's an area that both SOS and Mckay have spoken about and Carlton are all over it.
No more flogs that don't want to put Carlton first.
You are spot on! Now we know that culture of the club your playing at, the people and players at your local club who feel part of it and hurt when the team loses is what we got to aim for. We see it at our own local clubs. Is football that professional the players don't care. A selfish journey? I hope not

Disagree. You still need an element of luck. You seem to have ignored my point where the same hawks recruitment team missed out on Joel selwood -that was "ünlucky " So despite the best of intentions they had a fail there, It could easily happen in any given year.

True, but they drafted hard early, built a base and even pinched a flag before cherry picking from opposition clubsLook at Hawthorn's list - an overwhelming number of their premiership players came from other clubs. They were smart, savvy and expeditious during the trade periods and much could be learned from such an approach.
The facts
-We have a new coach who has worked under the best football system in the league for the past decade
-We have 5 new enthusiastic young players; many of which have been starved of opportunity and are at the right age for our club's development
-We have 4 first round draft picks to build a solid foundation upon. Weltering is as highly a touted a number 1 as has ever been seen and isn't just a great defender but provides exceptional rebound and smarts around the contest
-We've traded 3 players who didn't want to be there. All are conditional in their efforts, all had problems with their attitude and match-day application and each continued to perpetuate and embellish the problems of the club
-Our midfield on paper stacks up with most top 8 midfields in the league. A starting 4 of Kreuzer, Murphy, Gibbs and Cripps has a good mix of inside grunt, foot skills and class on the outside. If Bolton can fire them up and get the best out of them, we become very dangerous.
Your comments do nothing to dispel the drug culture rumours.2016 you blokes will be the bolter, this year it was us and the year before it Port...I'm tipping you guys to come through the pack and up the ladder.
