All-Australian that year. A few Westies blokes had career bests in ‘83. Linder & Luders were two more that come to mind.

Such a potent forward line - they kicked ‘em from everywhere, fmd.

Dat game at Richmond when they came from the clouds in the last ten minutes to beat us by one point and effectively end our season.

Poor ol’ Dexter Kennedy. Moves to Alberton the year Westies break their 22-year premiership drought. Stars in the ‘84 finals but... f@%k.

Also Mark Mickan. Played every game that year but missed the finals thru injury. Dirk de Jong answers Kerls’ SOS call, plays two games and jags a flag.

Fos didn’t mind a country call-up during the finals, either...

Kerls had a weekly column in the News and he always used it to further his aims. He called for defenders spoiling the ball to be outlawed because it would bring more marking into the game and be a better spectacle. He didn't for once think that he had the highest marking forward line in the league and could be giving them another hand up.

Jack called Tony Hannan down from country footy twice for premierships.

IMHO a B is very generous. I would have thought 6-5 with the run home we have is barely scraping a pass.

On our SANFL jumpers it now has OAK and Chemist Warehouse as the front sponsor and BCFR (Accountants) on the back.

In the front half of the season it was OAK and VALO on the front and VALO on the back.

Hopefully they fix the back sponsor up a bit because the big white bumper sticker makes the panel disappear.

Not surprising we don't have crumbers, or anyone to bring the ball down. Just constantly losing contests via a tall dropping marks or a small (eg Sam Gray) having no chance to mark it and then it just bounces out of our 50.

Anyone looked ahead to this weeks fixture yet? My first thought was how can we be into double ups by round 13. Then I realised the AFL are hiding potential tanking match ups midseason.

St Kilda vs Gold Coast (previously played round 1)
Carlton vs Bulldogs (previously played round 5)

It's becoming apparent that we've inadvertently been handed one of the hardest draws of any team.

Three of our double ups are against the three most improved teams in the league - Freo, Adelaide and Brisbane. We've also got a double up against last year's minor premiers Richmond. So 4 of our 5 double ups are against teams that will likely play finals. The other double up is against North, a middling team on about our level.

This sounds so similar to Port and I still believe it gets down to skills.

Skills are criminally underrated by our coaches. A well weighted kick or handball is going to:
1. Have our players running less (the disposer of the ball sets them up)
2. Have the opposition running more
3. Less turnovers and hence scores from turnovers
4. Force the opposition to play closer to our players, which should allow picking apart zones and presses more easily

It's why we shouldn't be in any rush to get back in Wines (or Ebert), two notorious burners of the ball. We can't carry that many butchers (that aren't John) of the ball and expect to seriously get anywhere. Hoff and SPray are two others (off of their horrendous shots on goal / inability to make the distance for shots on goal) that should be marked to go out.

It doesn't matter what your gameplan is, high press, fall back, man on man, etc. if you're continually turning it over or forcing players into what should be unnecessary contests.

Agreed. This is something our current coach has never addressed.

Everything Andre said for skills could be said for structure too. Running full pelt to take a mark with the flight if the ball doesn’t exactly aid accuracy when your heart is beating out your ears
