A premiership team can and would win every single game playing that style.

But we don't do it anywhere near often enough. We show up once every 2 weeks, rather than say 18 times over 23 weeks.

Mate that loss was clearly about the vibe. The fact that we're now picking 2 genuine KPFs every week and we've won a few close ones is completely coincidental and pales into insignificance when you consider that Jupiter of all planets managed to find itself in retrograde just 3 days before the game.

It also takes time for players to establish trust in each other. We scored 90+ points that game. The forward line wasn’t the problem - it was the inability of our defence to keep Lynch quiet.

The way we usually cut off a dominant big man is to swing Westhoff back where he can use his height and reading of the play to intercept mark, but we couldn't because we didn't pick adequate forward line cover. The poor selections in the forward line failed to take advantage of their weaknesses and the lack of ruthlessness cost us the game. Frampton or Marshall play and we win that game easily.

We scored more freely because Richmond play a high press which means any half decent football team gets through it fairly often and gets walk in uncontested shots at goal, so instead of our usual 10.12 we've kicked 14.8. Have a look at their games, any time they play a good football team the ratio of goals to behinds is like 1.8:1.

It was a bad stoppage performance by our standards, only going +1 in the clearances and +2 in the inside 50s. We were just more efficient in the forward line than we usually are because of the way Richmond play. Every good team is more efficient against them, much like us in 2017 where we'd clog up bad sides and good sides would waltz through our high press enough to score enough transition goals to win.

If Jonas, Clurey and Howard aren’t enough to stop Lynch, Westhoff dropping back isn’t going to help. Besides, two of those goals were from a ridiculous turnover in the middle of the ground that led to Burton having to chase Lynch and then his little shove made the umpire give Lynch another goal.

Do you know that Bonner has zero score involvements that game? That means not one of his 18 disposals resulted in a scoring chain. Ditto Motlop’s 7 disposals and Howard’s 14 disposals - donuts for score involvements.

Hence why it was more about trust between teammates. The guys that Richmond brought in were players who had been playing against premiership players in training and knew their system implicitly. Every single one of their players registered a score involvement. We had three who didn’t. That was the difference.

We had a group of players that were still figuring each other out and working on their connection in terms of who goes and who doesn’t.

And we play a high press too. That’s why we are first for forward half turnover and forward half stoppages, and why we kept bombing the ball in for little reward.

Pretty sure that was the year he starred in the NAB Cup thumping of the Crows and generally resembled the next Stephen Milne but with an aerial threat. Choco was all-in on him as the next great small forward too.

Would’ve been interesting to see how his career panned out sans the injuries, but bloody hell.

I hadn’t been that impressed with our midfield up until recently and was attributing any improvements to getting Lycett in, Rockliff uninjured and Boak back playing in the guts but they are starting to look better, perhaps it’s his influence, perhaps not. One thing’s for sure, happy Voss has moved on from being our mids coach.

Hard to tell, but given we have stuffed up against WCE the same way for 5 games in a row at Adelaide Oval between 2015-18, by bombing the ball for McGovern to dominate in the air, to completely change the way we played against them at Perth Stadium this year (after being smashed there last year), suggests to me a coach who came from WA, would have coached against their B grade affiliate East Perth several times, would have watched the way WCE play a lot, probably was the one who come up with the way to change the way we deliver the ball inside 50 against WCE, especially given he is the biggest change this year to our mid field players and coaches, and it was the mid field players who delivered most of the kicks inside 50.

Thanks to 11 wins out of 12 matches, the Stats Insider AFL Futures model says Geelong are almost certain to make it to the AFL Finals. The Magpies and the Giants are likely to accompany the Cats in the Top-4 in the absence of a monumental collapse.
