You're right Ford but it's pretty cold comfort really.

Yeah I know. I figure the corollary is that very good sides - which I think we will become - before long win the big and close margin games. ;)

Offsetting the bargain pick 28 for Hombsch/Neade was the wasted pick 33 for Brent Renouf.
Nah because no player we would've taken at 33 (even Brad Hill) would've been as good a pick up as the Hombsch/Neade deal will be for us going forward, we were so lucky to get Hombsch for Craplin.

At the time we were desperate for a ruck if only Roof didn't kick those 4 goals against us & we probably would've picked him up for nix as he was bound to get delisted, it wasn't one of Rohdes finest trades that's for sure.

Brad Hill has become a very decent player in a great system.

Basically the same happened with Ben Jacobs. The few games Rohde saw of him he was in and under picking up kicks at will. If some of our picks were a game of blackjack, they would be hoping for a 5 drawn on a 16.

How is it Peter Rohde's fault when Geoff Parker is head of recruiting? And you don't seriously think they make a drafting decision based on a few games?

Especially a year after the Crows beat us to Jacobs, in part because of our lack of interest at the time. Ah, Matty P.

Nah we had at least one poster here at the time who repeatedly said Port were very interested but Sam Jacobs priced himself out of our range. It wasn't Matty's fault that we were looking down the back of the couch for funds in those days. More like ah MyATM and AussieATM and Soaring Securities. Those were the glory days ...

Yep no doubt I'd love to have him on our list instead of the Roof but I'm pretty sure if the Hawks were offered to swap him for Hombsch they wouldn't be able to do the deal quick enough given their lack of KPD depth.

Funny the whole past & present ruck dilemma could've been avoided if we just swallowed our pride & gave Giles a second chance after he had that good year in the SANFL.

Oops, made that Peter Rohde mistake a few times. And with drafting, well maybe not just one or two games but I do think our drafting has sometimes left a lot to be desired. Maybe not as bad as the Aaron Fiora/Matthew Pavlich or Richard Tambling/Lance Franklin errors but we did not have the early draft picks to make howlers of that magnitude.

Poor Rohdey always getting blamed. :p

I'm sure there are some people (not you) who think recruiting is based on the two minute videos the AFL releases of each player before the draft. The recruiters put in hundreds of hours of watching players, reviewing videos, they go to Championship games, TAC Cup games as do coaches. And still it can be an inexact science.

Jacobs was rated in Emma Quayle's top 25 (just) and there was a group of those flanker types shuffling positions in that range. There were warning signs in the assessments of some junior footy watchers on his lack of intensity but Choco was on the lookout for a quarterbacking half back.

We've had some clangers, all clubs have but the 2004 draft (Alan Stewart's parting gift) hurt and the 2009 draft (including trading our way out of it trying to get a blockbuster deal for Shaun Burgoyne) is looking shaky. Thank goodness we traded Jay Schulz in that year.

How simple could 2009 have been? Trade Burgoyne for pick 9 and Josh Kennedy, keep our second and third round picks, draft Nat Fyfe, Jake Carlisle and Nathan Vardy (we would have still drafted John Butcher and rightfully so). We would be premiership favourites now. Oh well, spilled milk. Rohdey wears some of the mud for that one, although Choco was behind the scenes wanting to extract every last drop of the Burgoyne trade.

The last couple of drafts have made up some ground for us and should continue to improve as KT puts money into the football operations department.

He wants to start contract talks over a year before his current one is due to expire. I think we can safely put him down as staying. Contrast with wincey, whose contract ends at the same time.

I agree - won't leave in my view. Remember the emotion surrounding his injury a couple years ago, and how PAFC immediately offered a new contract on the spot etc. I don't believe anyone of sound character would leave after being shown support and loyalty like that from the club - and it appears that Robbie oozes "character".

I agree, he has the potential to be a champ but that is 80 games away......or four years

we need someone for 2015 and 16

Jack Watts? Does he work?

I see watts as a cheap pick up who has the ability to play but needs a work ethic.

Seeing what ken has done to polec in one preseason gives me optimism he can do it with jack

Yeah - I closed the other post with "If he only had a heart, or just one competitive bone in his body...".

Heard Tim Watson (I think) on SEN this morning, saying that a good source had told Watson a few years ago that Jack Watts wouldn't make it - despite skills and ability etc he was simply not competitive or hungry enough to impact contests or games. Lazy perhaps?

If that was his "knock" pre-draft, Watts' I mean, then it certainly doesn't appear to have improved much during his time at Melbourne.

Can KH & Burgess implant something that isn't and hasn't ever been there?
What does it cost? Despite a poor first 4-5 years in the AFL (in my view), he will not come cheap and will be highly sought I would think?

6th in centre clearances is deceiving, we have been thoroughly poleaxed in the last 10 weeks in the midfield.

Was there ever talk of Kennedy being on the table for Burgoyne? I can't recall...

Hawthorn put up a list of players that included Kennedy and McGlynn. Choco knocked them all back. He wanted higher profile senior players or more promising juniors.

So we would have had picks 8, 9 and Kennedy.
