There isn’t much that Levi Ashcroft has not won throughout his junior career. Hailing from a family of winners, he is set to follow in the footsteps of father Marcus and brother Will when he joins Brisbane in November’s National Draft. The former was a 318-game, three-time premiership player with the Lions, while the latter recently became the youngest Norm Smith Medallist in the AFL era after just 31 top level games.

Levi himself is a three-time premiership player in the Coates Talent League (CTL), taking out the first flag when Will was captain of the Sandringham Dragons. He has also achieved team success with Brighton Grammar in the APS competition, winning the 2022 and 2024 titles, while helping Vic Metro take out this year’s Under 18 National Championship. It’s a heck of a resume, and that’s just the team aspect.

Ashcroft has been an All-Australian for the past three years, once at Under 16 level before back-to-back Under 18 selections. He is a dual-CTL Team of the Year member, too, and a dual-Sandringham best and fairest winner. Another accolade to add to the list is his best afield medal in the AFL Academy’s second showcase game this year, against Footscray VFL. He had 28 disposals that day at Whitten Oval.

The father-son gun went on to make his VFL debut with the Lions this year, travelling up to Queensland and proving he was up to the level. He gathered a game-high 35 disposals and 11 clearances in his one and only state league appearance, also booting a typically classy goal on the run from a tight, long-range angle. He can do it all.

Leadership is a developing trait of Ashcroft’s, and he co-captained the Dragons this year alongside over-age ruck Brodie Findlay. The most ridiculous part of all his achievements is the fact he is still just 17-years-old, as a December birth. He had the opportunity to play alongside Will in 2021 and 22, and after spending time training with Brisbane during preseason, will again land at Springfield come draft time.
Brisbane could again be acquiring the best player in the AFL Draft as a father-son selection, and for the second time in three years that prospect hails from the Ashcroft family.

Sandringham Dragons and Vic Metro star Levi Ashcroft would be seen by many as the leading player in the class of 2024, with his ball-winning nous, creativity around the contest and intelligence among the many leading traits the teenager has to offer.

Ashcroft is set to join older brother and Norm Smith Medal winner Will at the Lions this off-season, with the duo heading to Brisbane and following in the footsteps of their father, triple premiership player Marcus Ashcroft.

And much like his sibling, Levi could have an instant impact at AFL level and will make a strong case to break into Chris Fagan's senior side fresh off their premiership campaign.

Ashcroft was a dominant force at every level he featured in 2024, representing the Dragons, Vic Metro, Brighton Grammar, the AFL Academy and Brisbane's VFL side.

Arguably his most impressive performance of the year came in his single outing with the latter, with Ashcroft recording 35 disposals, eight marks, 11 clearances, six inside 50s, eight score involvements, five tackles and a goal against GWS' reserves in August.

Those numbers mirror the output Ashcroft put forward across his draft campaign, with the balanced onballer recording 30 or more touches in six of his nine games on the way to securing a third flag with the Dragons - capping off the year with 29 disposals and three goals in the grand final victory.

Ashcroft was equally strong in Vic Metro's undefeated U18s carnival and was the best performer across both of the AFL Academy's pair of matches with Coburg and Footscray, earning best-afield honours against the latter.

Lions fans will be licking their lips with the incoming addition of Ashcroft to their flag-winning ensemble, even moreso given the likeness Ashcroft might attract in comparison with Brisbane superstar Lachie Neale.

A rival bid for Ashcroft is likely to come in the opening few selections, with Brisbane doing their part to have the required points ready to match the anticipated early bid.

Confirmed first game for a famous Lions family name

Levi Ashcroft will become the third member of his family to officially pull on the Brisbane Lions jumper when he makes his AFL debut on Saturday against the Sydney Swans at the SCG.

The 18-year-old midfielder, drafted as a father-son selection with Pick 5 at last year’s draft, has been named as the substitute for the Grand Final re-match.

Ashcroft follows in the footsteps of his father and Lions triple premiership legend Marcus, and older brother Will who won the Norm Smith in the club’s 2024 premiership.

Coach Chris Fagan told the Lions playing group the exciting news following Thursday’s training session in Sydney.

Fagan started the meeting with some interesting trivia about some of the competition’s most elite players who started their careers as sub, including Co-Captain Lachie Neale.

The premiership coach then provided Ashcroft with the reasons why he deserved his spot in the Lions team and what he expected.

“It is a bloody fair effort to break into this side when you think of it,” Fagan said.

“Of the 23 that represented this club in the Grand Final last year, the only bloke missing in Joey (Joe Daniher) because he retired, but everybody is fit and available for selection.

“So on the back of having shoulder surgery, a bit of a later start to the pre-season then getting involved in some of the later practice games, you’ve been able to force your way into the side which is a remarkable effort when you think about it.

“We wish you all the best, continue the Ashcroft tradition in the Brisbane Lions family and play alongside your brother (Will) which is going to be really exciting.

“We know you are going to make a huge contribution to the team when you come onto the ground, so well done.”

The young midfielder spoke briefly following the announcement, as he expressed his gratitude and excitement ahead of his AFL debut.

“I would just like to thank Fages (Chris Fagan), Danny (Daly) and the club for all the support they have given me over this time,’ Ashcroft said.

“I obviously had the shoulder surgery, so it was a bit of a tough start to my AFL career and the pre-season.

“I’d also like to thank all of you guys (players and staff in the room) for the support you have given me since being here.

“I am really looking forward to the weekend so let’s go get them.”

Brisbane Lions midfielder Levi Ashcroft impressed in his first game on the mighty MCG to be named the Telstra AFL Rising Star nominee for Round 4.

Ashcroft, taken as a father-son selection with Pick 5 at the 2024 Telstra AFL Draft, was one of his side’s best players in Saturday’s 28-point win over Richmond.

The 18-year-old shared his time on the wing and up forward as he gave the crowd of more than 40,000 an exciting glimpse of his talents.

Ashcroft finished the day with a notable stats sheet of a goal, four marks, four intercept possessions, six score involvements, 22 disposals and 321 metres gained.

Brisbane Lions General Manager Football, Danny Daly said Ashcroft had produced a strong start to the season in his debut year.

“Levi is one of the most impressive first-year players you will find both on and off the field, so it’s great to see him receive recognition like this,” Daly said.

“The way he trains and prepares is a real credit to him and not only is that allowing him to contribute to the team, he is starting to reap the rewards himself also.

“What is quite incredible is that Levi, as a young kid in his first year, has come into a strong team that is the reigning premier and yet he is helping us improve.

“The challenge for him now is to keep working hard and keep building on what he has delivered in the first four games.”

The young midfielder has become the third Ashcroft to play for the Brisbane Lions, following in the footsteps of older brother and current teammate Will and his father Marcus – whose number 10 he now wears.

Ashcroft joined the Lions from the Sandringham Dragons in the Coates Talent League where he played in three premierships and won two best and fairest awards.

His journey to Brisbane also included an APS Premiership with Brighton Grammar School and junior football with St Kilda City in Melbourne.
