Yep he's the shining example of someone who just looks at failure as an opportunity to try, try again. Never just threw in the towel and thought it was all too hard. Even with a stadium full of people no doubt throwing out jeers and opposition fans and players trying to further put him off his game while taking a set shot.

Ya gotta admire that.

At the beginning of the year Levi (imho) would've been at the rear of the pecking order of our afl rated bigs. Going to make for a very interesting selection committee when Harry, Charlie, Liam, Levi and the rest of the bigs are all available for selection. Never thought I’d say it but with coaches wanting players who are versatile...Levi is going to make it hard to be left out.

He’s the best 2nd ruck too out of all of them

great point, b & b - never seen him crack the sads, drop his bundle, blame anyone else, ask to leave, sulk or kick a tin down the road - and under more pressure every time he lines up for goal than the bass straight gas-line..............he has failed and failed and failed again - now look at him - so much respect
Probably a good thing before Sav came along because the tin would have ended up going through someone's front window.:D

Hi friends, just hoping someone can clear something up for me. I was just wondering how many games Casboult played in defence and how many forward? From what I can see his first game in defence was vs St Kilda in round 10 after Jones went down for the first time. In total I calculated 14 forward and 6 in defence, does that sound about right? TIA.

It sounds about right. He played more good games in those 6 or 7 games back than he did in his 10 years up forward.

Hope you haven't got your eye on him as a forward....for your sake.

Apparently you are keen.

Our supporters are definitely keen (they’re also stupid) on getting him to play forward. I’ve been arguing that Casboult’s best footy this season was when he played down back, which was about six games.

Levi is a cult like player. He has a lotta fans here also. Humbly , i am not one of them.

He has played forward a lot...predominantly very poorly.

He has played a fair bit in the ruck.....predominantly poorly.

He has played back 6 or 7 times this year....and has actually played some good games.

That's as honest as i can be.

He does still want to play forward, so i can see him shopping himself to you as a forward.

His forward line work continued to improve over the last 3 years, finally as a 2nd string KPF.

As a ruck he has actually provided more grunt than the likes of Phillips and at times a better option than MK

Now he has added KPD versatility

Give him 2 years and delist Phillips, then trade in Darcy Cameron

I'd be happy with that and for the reasons you've outlined.
We've no reason to ask Casboult to be a starting 22 player, but if he can support the young talls at times in the VFL, he'd be playing a good role.
Of course if someone wants to offer him a better deal and a longer tenure, we should at least consider the trade, now that we have the ability to trade thanks to the enforced trigger.

Re. Betts.
No Tipa. Papley highly unlikely now. We don't have anyone that can genuinely kick a goal at ground level.
It may well be a mistake in the end, but given the circumstances, it may actually not end up being the worst of mistakes.

Re Betts: Would be great for the romance, but not for a list management decision. If we have shown we can compete/win games (6 of the last 11), but our greatest deficiency is still inside 50's then it is glaringly obvious that our midfield is the area of need.

We need speed, better footskills and mature bodies(youth will eventually add more of the last component )

Add to that, a durable ruckman in the 22 -26 age range that is a threat forward

I think Casboult will go. Option of being a back up tall on a one year deal or a 2-3yr deal with a better chance of a second deal and on better money at a side needing talls (Melbourne,Dogs,Pies,Saints,Suns,Swans,Crows, Hawks).

Said it months ago, that Casboult should go.
No fair person could blame him leaving if a three year offer was on the table from elsewhere.

Understanding is though that he's not keen on leaving this state. That may yet be the biggest drawback for him finding himself at let's say Gold Coast.

On Levi : The Club has tried shopping Levi around for the last couple of years - as has his own management - SOS has made sure his 'cost' is peanuts to Carlton and Levi has outperformed expectations and cost - massively. Amazing what a better fitness regime and not being the only target for a totally dysfunctional midfield can do for a player.

My Observations (FWIW) : Everyone is waiting to see Marchbank/Williamson/McCreadie actually come good and be able to stay on the park - good luck with that ( and I dont say that with any malice to the blokes at all ) add Docherty to the list of potential disappointments and Simpson because of age - and I can see the Club taking Talia on board in order to shore up real as opposed to hope and faith structure in defensive lines - our defensive depth isn't as good as it looked a couple of years ago....

That said - it seems the Club is genuinely 'chasing' the much needed addition of developed midfield bodies this year - easier said than done though since every team wants the same. Papley/Martin are no certainties/won't happen as far as adding to outside run and goal sense go either...

Continue to agree with you Arr0w - back up to Kreuzer must feature high on wish list as well.

So shoot me if I get too excited about any chance of snagging Wines - would totally change the potency of clearance capability at Carlton and buy enough time for Fisher/Stocker/Dow/LoB/Setterfield/Walsh to develop with less pressure on them - would be a fantastic get and I'd pay the price to mongrel up - gladly.

Won't happen though - too good an outcome.

All that seems pretty straight forward to me....nice!!

There does seem to be a window of opportunity to get Wines. I always look for a logical window before i devote much more thought to anything. Most things come the "8 months long trade season lol" i just move str8 past. But there is a small logical window.

In saying that, it is only a small window here with Wines. If memory serves correctly, Leigh Colbert is the only Captain this century to leave his Club and then you need to go back nearly 50 years to Tuddy.

Like most things, if it happens, it happens. I'll be sitting here with great interest watching. Unemotional great interest. But that's just me.

Griffen, Lynch, May jump straight to mind, let's not go back too far.

Jeez, 3 brain fades there. cheers. Does Hodge also fit too? Although he actually retired.

Let me try and rescue myself a bit here. Colbert and Tuddy were genuine shockers. I do know the personal circs behind the Griffin saga. That was a bit of a one off. And Gold Coast are a bit special i think it would be fair to say.

Good pick ups though. But would you think it would still be fair to say that moving a Captain from a credible club is extremely rare?

Amazing that the critics still lambast Levi despite the season he has had. Hide your heads in shame, the bloke has done nothing but try his hardest at this club. I can't believe a guy who can mark the ball the way he does wouldn't be a wanted player and as much as you might slag off on his kicking it has certainly improved. Wondering how long before you jump on McKay for his very average attempts at kicking for goal this year?

Always thought he would improve when he wasn't the number 1 key tall.

I thought he may have been unfairly cut a couple of times, thankfully the club and Levi hung tough

In career best form

For a lot of years he wasn't quite good enough to keep but far to valuable to let go … an enigma is our Bolt!

We need to keep Levi. From the early days I've always considered him a second ruck option that could push forward and in a perfect world that's what his position would have been from the start. Now that we have genuine tall forward options he can fill this role quite nicely. In addition he has now demonstrated that he can lock down on the biggest key forward that a team has. He has continued to improve his kicking and is now quite competent in the ruck. Could easily play the role of No 1 in the absence of Matty K. His presence will buy us time to develop our next genuine ruckman

He's never been fitter and he provides the team with greater flexibility in terms of set ups. He deserves a 2 year contract on reasonable money and I hope he becomes a 150 game player who gets to experience some finals success.

I am a Levi fan but I don’t think we can extend him past next year as he is reportedly asking for.

If he gets offered 3 years elsewhere I can’t blame him for leaving.

My preference is that he stays as he is valuable backup for us, just don’t think he is best 22 when all our talls are available. (Which actually rarely happens)
