given the all time longest kicks are above 88 meters* - or at least 16 of the top 20^

is it time to bring back the place kick at goal? or even better the drop kick ala bernie superboot quinlan?

is this crazy? maybe but here's my hypothesis.

levi's goal kicking biomechanics are shit already so there's no risk in wiping the slate clean.

as much as i'd love to see the place kick come back i think the routine is a little involved so i'd start with drop kicks.

the drop kick is still very valid for both soccer and gaelic goal keepers and rugby union types so there'd be a decent specialist coach around.

brendan bolton, i know you're reading this, give it a crack in the nab cup!

sorry about the lack of capitalisation, this windows 10 tablet is annoying to type on.

Drop kick requires a good ball drop. Think that's the bit that troubles his set shot kicking. He is better off kicking it before it touches the turf (and of course improving his kicking).

Well, actually, you don't necessarily 'drop' the ball - you can bounce it down just prior to connecting with your foot.....so IMO less chance of deviation along vertical axis if used in that way. Not like-for-like.

i played goal keeper for awhile, you bounce and run onto it, kicking on the up. i always found in running in a straight line it was far more accurate, probably for the reason you give, the ball drop is tied to your gait.

Such an underrated word ....

Sorry to go back on topic.
One of the the drills we were told to use when teaching juniors how to correctly drop the footy onto their boot, was to get them to practice kicking with a tennis ball as your technique has to be near perfect to kick it straight.

According to my Nonno, a specimen pilots a rocket ship...

Sorry, carry on

Can't imagine with Casboults ball drop that he'd be better with a drop kick, I think he'd be worse.

As soon as someone started using a place kick in the AFL the rules committee would get rid of it, that's my feel.

Casboult is a ruckman who can take a mark who is being used inappropriately as a forward. Train him to go into the midfield and ruck him, take off some weight and get him running. Hell, this might even make him a better shot at goal and half decent center half forward because he can't run hard enough to be a decent center half forward in my opinion.
