Welcome to the mighty Sainters, Lewis!

Club from: Dandenong Stingrays

DOB:16/11/1994
Height:202cm
Weight: 92kg
Player assessment: Exciting young ruckman with good endurance and the ability to take a nice overhead mark. Has genuine football smarts and very good game sense and awareness. His tap work is very good as is his ability to cover the ground and provide a tall mobile target. Has shown he can also go forward on occasions and be effective. His leadership and football character are excellent. Played in 4 of 5 games for Vic Country at this year’s NAB AFL U18 Championships
- AFL.com.au
Head recruiter Tony Elshaug on Pierce:“We think he’s 203cm and he’s still growing we think. He was a teammate of Nathan’s at Dandenong Stingrays and he has had a tough year. He played through adversity with injury. He had knee tendonitis at the start, came into the championships and held his own against the best ruckmen in Australia. He broke his thumb just after the championships but fought his way back to play through adversity again and did a good job. He showed he could mark the footy and can ruck and play forward. He’s a good person too with a strong character and we’re pleased to have a young ruckman on the list to complement Ben (McEvoy), Tom (Hickey) and Rhys (Stanley). It gives us a good profile and we’re pleased to have him."

Lewis Pierce Highlights

From Inside Football:

"Lewis has had injury problems for 3 years mainly associated with his growth because he's a tall kid. He's never been able to get any real consistency in his game but off the back of two trial games he got picked for Vic Country. He's actually quite mobile for a kid his size and while he still has a long way to go, he might be worth a risk for a team late in the draft. If he could get himself fit he's certainly an AFL player." (Graeme Yeats, who coached him this year at Dandenong Stingrays)

I really like the look of him and everything I've heard about him (except the injuries part). Seems to tick pretty much every box and the fact he's apparently up to 92kg's already is also a very good sign. He could end up quite a bit taller than say Mac and by the sounds of it might have a bit more mobility and leap as well, so I'm really looking forward to seeing him develop.

“Competed really well against far more experienced ruckman. The skill advancement during the year was clearly evident for all regular attendees of the Sandringham games. I believe the work being done by the development team at the Saints has significantly fast tracked this improvement. He will hope to get his chance to play some AFL football in 2014. A great kid with a very strong and competitive spirit.” – Sandringham Assistant Coach, Matt Embling told True Zebras.

Lewis Pierce was probably the surprise packet of 2013, really impressing regular Sandringham watches with his development over the course of the season. When he was drafted he was skinny ruckman and most thought it would take while to see him competitive at senior VFL level.

But he put on a lot of weight during off season and really started to show his elite tap work by end of season. He is a genuine tap ruckman and competed well against the bigger bodied AFL ruckman like David Hille. Pierce and Hamish Shepheard formed a pretty dangerous ruck combination as year went on. In 3 of last 5 games he won 20+ hitouts. His last month of football was extremely good.

Throughout the season he didn’t get a lot of his own ball, but that will come over time as he further develops his game. He will be looking to add a 2nd string to his bow as currently he’s a pure tap ruckman. But late in season he did show he could take a strong contested mark-up forward.

Pierce will be looking to bulk up more this off season and continue to develop his game in 2014. With continued good form we could see him debut at some stage. Saints fans will be happy they have genuine depth in the ruck department.

Here's what the 2015 Champion Data Prospectus had to say about Pierce:

Has averaged just 6 disposals per game in the VFL and has failed ot win more than 11 in any match.

His hitout-to-adv rose from 22% to 25%.

Lewis Pierce post his first NAB Cup appearance: http://www.saints.com.au/video/2015-03-19/lewis-pierce-postmatch

Pierce came on as the sub in the second half and recorded 5 touches and 7 hit outs. As well as a strong contested mark on the wing.

Still a way to go but a positive first step for a kid who wants to be pushing or selection this year, and with some tough competition in our other rucks - Hickey, Longer and Holmes.

How good is this!!

Luke just tweeted that he saw Lewy Pierce toiling away in the Gym (by himself) 2 days after his season ended!! Shows he's got the drive to succeed...if he can get his body to the right size/shape/fitness he'll be a good player long-term.

Great news. He is already a massive unit. Plenty of hard work and he will be even bigger.

I really liked some of his tap work on the weekend. The kid certainly has some potential!

Legs are building up for sure by the look of that pic.

Good to hear the big guy getting a pump up from Richo. Hopefully he is one that takes a big leap and adds some flexibility to what we can do in the off season.

"The senior coach also mentioned developing ruckman Lewis Pearce as a player who has stood out during the pre-season thus far.

“‘Lewy’ Pearce has been really strong for us. Maverick Weller – one of our younger leaders. ‘Newnesy’ has also been really strong setting a great example (by) inspiring and motivating his teammates – that’s true of both those guys. So there certainly been some strong contributors.”

This is the interesting one. Will we give him the 3-4 years he needs to develop?

If so, he'll likely be behind Stanley, McEvoy and Hickey. Just realised all their names end in Y.

Woo Piercey!

Three years later and a few of those names have changed but he's still roughly 3rd/4th in the pecking order.

Be good to see him get a debut this year.

Once this guy comes on, what the hell do we do with our plethora of rucks?

Big fella in battle with Holmesy. And getting some purchase in a pack.

His arms still have a bit of linguine about them. His legs at least are a good size, so hopefully that's enough.

VFL Rd 1: not much influence, but a heavy forward component. I heard Richo pump his tyres up a little on SEN pre game show (Sunday, post Collingwood win). But little to report at this stage (even photos are peripheral!)

Lewis Pierce (12 hitouts, eight disposals, three clearances, three tackles)

“Lewy played predominantly forward as well as the second tier ruck at about 20 to 30 per cent in there. He ran hard to try to get the outlet and at times got outside his opponent, but can improve his positioning and his judgement in the flight of the ball. His ruck work was good, but he does need to improve his work up forward"
