SF1: Animals run wild vs. City Oval Plovers
Two of the more successful sides over the journey face off in the first do-or-die semi-final. The Animals won the flag a few years back, but as mentioned in these previews, we don’t speak of that day. But they are consistently top four and they may well have made top four each year as far back as this writer can remember.
The Plovers have been the benchmark team over the past two seasons, winning the flag undefeated two seasons ago and then falling one short of making history with back-to-back flags. Now they will look to win their second flag in three years and go to three consecutive grand finals, but they will need a lot of luck.
The Animals have been the more consistent team over the season with injuries really hurting the Plovers in season 2017. Nat Fyfe looks to be back in form, while Tom Rockliff gave a glimpse of what he is capable of after a poor second half of the season. A fit and firing Maxy Gawn back poses a threat to any opposition side, while his opposite ruck Todd Goldstein seemingly is past his fantasy best.
If the likes of Adam Treloar and ‘Buddy’ can go big for the Animals, they will go in favourites here, but anything can happen with the likes of Fyfe and Gawn in the Plovers line-up. Either way, we know a top side will not be back next week, while the winner will meet the Polar Bears in the preliminary final.
SF2: Mozzie Bites vs. The Cheetahs
The Cheetahs have had an indifferent season with their best being up there and their worst being lucky to scrape together a win. They got over a patched together Dragons side last week and have earned the right to take on the Mozzie Bites here.
It’s always good to see the Mozzie Bites in the second week of finals, it means amos is active and it’s a throwback to 2012 when they were last relevant. Ever since the equalisation policy – or the ‘Buddy’ rule (taking goals from midfielders) – the Mozzie Bites have not been themselves. We’ve been told the Mozzies are the premiership favourites and there’s nothing that screams premiership favourites like dropping your first final and going the long way around.
If the Mozzies do get up, then it sets up the tantalising Ladyboys/Mozzies clash which let’s be honest, we all want to see. Simply because of the fireworks and after game banter between the traditional rivals. One side is a constant premiership threat until the preliminary final, the other cannot remember the last time it actually reached the preliminary final. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe The Ladyboys knocked the Mozzies out of the semi-finals in straight sets a couple of years ago .
Anyway, The Cheetahs have their work cut out for them here, they will need a lot of luck but anything can happen in finals, and if they can get up, then they will return from the footy wilderness into the final four.
Good luck to all teams
