This guy is gonna be a very exciting footballer good pick up dees, imagine when he gets a season or 2 in him

l left Yuendumu early this morning and attended the game with his mother, grandmother, auntie and father. We were all crying with joy at Liam making it to the AFL and representing Yuendumu and Warlpiri people so well. When he ran out out tonight - Words cannot describe the wonder we feel at his achievement and the meaning that it brings. So inspired and so proud. The fact that he played so well on debut is a lovely bonus. Thanks so much to the Dees (especially Davey, Aussie, Wheels and Development coach Ian Flack) for providing him with a home in Melbourne. And Bruce and all the Industrial Magpies as well. The support of the club and the fans has been really important for Liam to build a home and career here. He loves being a Dee and cannot wait to deliver a great career for the club for the next 10 years. All Yuendumu proud.

Thank you Liam. So so much. Our beloved son of Yuendumu.

Has got cult figure written all over him. When Wona gets back down there it'll be cult figure central in the forward line.

When he kicked that goal tonight, I could swear all the Essendon fans went just as berserk as ours did.

But apart from the goal, he simply didn't make mistakes (which is more than I can say for everyone else on the team bar Sylvia). He is not just skillful, he makes everyone else look shithouse by comparison (including Davey).

When he flew for that mark and kicked that guy in the back (instead of using his knees he just flat out kicked him) and his vicrtim went tumbling out of bounds, I knew we were in for a good time.

His first game made a 50+ point loss bearable. Stayed til the final siren purely because I couldn't afford to miss any of him. My Essendon supprting mate said at one point "this guy is playing his first game right? He's making us look shit, thank god he's your only player"

It's well noted we were going to take him in the Rookie Draft after he'd been training with us before you guys snapped him up in the PSD.

I couldn't stop smiling after that goal in the goal square, one of the highlights of the season thus far without a doubt.

Could be the second time Melbourne have stooged us in the PSD (Davey being the other one, even though that was our own fault). Just hope he can find his place in Melbourne, because the bloke has unbelievable talent.

What a debut guys!

Honeslty don't care to much about the loss, it was expected. This kid a shining light for the Melbourne Footy club.

Great to see support from all the AFL public on BF, can't imagine how proud his friends and family were watching him on the big stage.

Well done Liam, you are a DEMON!

A great start! The jouney most take from suburban/country juniors looks pretty bland when one looks at where this young man comes from. Try Google Earth to check where he came from. THAT is what I call remote!

Bravo Liam!

i thought he was very impressive. he looked lively, which almost no other demon player (and a number of essendon players) were. big prospect for the future but the question is whether the dees can hold onto him?

He's like a tribal leader and comes from the very remote regions of our continent. Preventing him from homesickness is gonna be real tough, and don't say "there's several other indigenous kids there to help him" because that works only so much.

gl anyway with him

Mate l can assure tfromhere is nothing to worry about there. From the families and the communities perspective we are unbelievably behind him in this dream. Him being here in Melbourne playing AFL football is part of his culture - being a leader and a warrior treading a new path. This is Warlpiri business for him to be down here representing the Warlpiri tribe. He is the pride of Yuendumu by being in Melbourne with his strength, joy and determination. He loves being a Dee (who have been sensational to him), he loves loves loves playing footy at the highest level and won;t be going anywhere else :thumbsu:.

Oooooh yeah. That's the shizzle! :thumbsu:

Awesome debut, and to add to all the other comments: Laim's no squib either - not afraid to have a go and to go in hard!

That first goal was simply spectacular.

Now thats bollocks.
You guys picked up a gem absolutely no one (probs exagerated.) knew about.

Collingwood and North both knew about him.
he played a few games for the pies VFL affiliate last year but decided not to pursue drafting him

and North wanted to take him in the pre season draft but we got him first :D

Well, I have to say that was one of the most exciting debuts I have ever witnessed. Although he didn't dominate, he showed, on a number of occasions, that he has the quality and potential to succeed at the highest level. He seems to have a good knowledge of the game, amazing athletic ability and a good set of skills too. Along with the other young players, Liam is someone who will give us something to look forward to in this difficult time.

A great debut by someone who is arguably the league's most exciting player.

Nice debut by Liam. I've been looking forward to seeing him play at AFL level for a while and the wait was worth it. As well as playing for the Yuendumu Magpies, he had a stint with AFLNT team Nightcliff right before he was drafted.

Hopefully, he has a long career playing in the AFL.

The CH7 commentary team were just astounded at his natural ability last night. Has poise, ability and the X-factor as well. Good luck Liam. You have a long, bright future ahead! :thumbsu:

Haha kk, good to know that Collingwood will be doing a massive 'FFFFFFFFUUUUUU' in a few years time
:D

Why?

He was brought down as a project player in the VFL team last year, played 4 games and had to return home for private reasons.

He never nominated for the National Draft at the end of last year and in the first draft that he did nominated Melbourne took him with the #1 pick of the PSD after seeing him play in the NTFL.

He's a shorter version of NickNat. Happy with that.

Aussie, Jurrah, Watts, Maric, Bate.

Wow. We've finally got forwards who can kick the sherrin well in general play and for goal.

This is Liam taking a mark at a game in Papunya a few years ago. It's the cover to the Aboriginal Rules dvd.
