He did some good things at times but went missing a bit. But hardly got a run in the VFL due to all the covid breaks. Just give him a chance to make it as a forward if he fails then look at moving him down back

Liam is already playing Down Back, Taking Keane's Spot

Looks like they have moved him back. Any danger of ever sticking it out developing a forward. I thought the Buckley era swapping what end the big lads were playing at each year would be done
The way big Mason is going now he can see his only option for a game for the next few years is probably down back.

Liam looked to have put on some weight/muscle tonight. Not the skinny kid I recall. Unless I'm mixing him up with someone else. We've got a few guys who look like each other.

You can’t expect someone who splits their focus across two roles to develop at either as fast as if they were left to specialise in one
You don’t think a kid playing as a defender wouldn’t be learning a bit about forward craft at the same time.

Perhaps putting him up against a few good forwards would do him wonders.

Either that or perhaps club has already come to conclusion he is not a forward.

Lol the old playing back to learn to play forward cliche. We have a terrible track record developing KPP

If they can’t cope with the learning experience then they probably are never gunna make the grade. You’re overreacting big time
Yep. McMahon is miles off and If Kelly is dropping marks, he's not AFL relevant yet either, regardless of the end he plays. Like so many of the under 18 prospects do, I've got no qualms which end they are playing at the moment, or whether they get switched around. And it's not like either has done much at VFL at either end. I don't get how people are certain which end they'd be best off playing.

Going off stats, McMahon has barely been able to touch the footy in VFL as a forward or even in his u18 year. Yet we're getting told that he must play forward due to his excellent forward craft?

Seems a bit to me like they are tossing him around searching for a fit.

The fact they are persevering with Kelly as a forward over him is a worry... and it’s not because Kelly visited the coach and said I’d rather play forward. This isn’t the Menangatang 2nds.

It’s also telling that you never hear anything about him in club media or fan training reports. By comparison Begg seems to get more wraps

I know I will be canned for this... but he seems a candidate for an early delisting for mine... like Rantall, McLarty, Goodyear etc before him

not saying that would be a fair outcome as he’s still a kid... but some players though just never get enough early traction, and every year 4-6+ players leave

And with 27 or so players out of contract and a likely top 4-6 pick in a KPP rich draft... plus some mature talls available in FA and at years end as DFAs

🤷‍♂️

It might be relevant for a new coaching group who wouldn't have seen much of him at all, as he hasn't played much at either end.

Not sure why at the start of preseason they would have pigeon-holed him as a defender. Previous coaching group were playing him as a forward. He's saying he's a forward. What would they have been basing their opinion of him being a defender upon? Under 18 draft reports? Give him a decent opportunity to show he's a forward, and if he can't show that, move him.

Kelly played defence in NAB league I believe. Don’t recall hearing of him as a forward in his draft year...

I'm sure our coaches know that, but I doubt our current coaches saw much of that. Would you expect them to place more credence on where his under 18 coach played him or where he and his previous AFL coaches thought he was suited?

They're giving him a shot up forward. If he doesn't cut it and they think he won't make it there, I daresay they will play him in a different role. Same with Kreuger and Begg. I just don't see how it's an issue. We have a coach who started up forwardin the AFL before becoming an outstanding chb. We also have a current outstanding chb, who started up forward, a solid full back who started his AFL in the ruck. And a solid chf who played mainly in defence until his mid twenties.

McMahon was seriously bad in his first 5 VFL games.

Looked below the level.

i watched a couple of VFL games last year and I thought he looked very promising....Needs time to develop, I am a believer you can learn KPF skills by playing as KPB especially against good players.

All of our 3 decent kpp played different positions when they were coming through. And two of the most promising young kpfs - Naughton and Ben King played most of their developing football in defence. There really isn't an issue in which tall role he's currently playing, whilst still a long way off AFL.

Yes!
Just needs time to develop physically..

Yep. KPD might actually be better for his development. Kids gravitate towards the tactics that work for them. At his current size, flying in packs is unlikely to work for him. If played up forward, there is a fair chance that you'll develop him into a bloke who doesn't do this, but instead plays more like a tall flanker.
