Very talented but we are probably 2 years away from making real strides to improve and history would suggest probably another 1 or 2 away from contending (assuming things go well on the rebuild). With his injuries I would probably rather pass but I guess it depends on the cost, wouldn’t want to overpay for him.

He may very well be.

Ryan is(?) already a class player/All Australian.

Therein lies the difference.

With his injury history you need to add the big question mark.

It's why he's going to be below market value.

Fully fit Ryan is a first rounder but right now he's damaged goods.

Then he stays.

Not really sure why Hawks would be interested to begin with.

Relationship with Mitchell/Hickmott. Hawks obviously feel he is gettable for a price they are willing to pay (likely anything after the McCabe bid which is likely to fall within the first 20 picks). Our forward line is a bunch of kids and Breust/Wingard who won't play for much longer.

Expectations of a first rounder is unrealistic. If Ryan wants out he will go for an early to mid 2nd rounder and some change at best.

Seems a no brainer value pick up if we can get him fit/motivated.

Maybe.

When I said late first, I meant literally end of first, early second. I think that's more than fair for a bloke who's been AA in the past and whose form has been very good when not injured.

Injury history isn't that bad, apart from this year obviously.

It's the nature of the injury that would impact his value, especially if reports that he won't even be training until January at the earliest is correct. The club trading him in is taking on the risk that the injury is career altering.

Fully fit he's a top 10 pick.

Nah, even fully fit I reckon he'd be worth early-mid teens.

Don't get me wrong, great player, but you pay top 10 picks for pure match winners, imo.

At the end of the day your opinion means nothing as does mine. If the club (WC) is looking to shop him then it’s up to them and the Hawks to work out fair value and a player coming off a huge injury layoff pretty much always goes for under what he is worth or the deal never eventuates. From all reports and Ryan being spotted watching Hawk games it seems WC is letting this happen.

I doubt WC are 'shopping' him. As a club, it's usually the complete opposite.

They would happily listen to offers though.

very difficult to assess and it’s not a formula there are wide variations of value to different clubs based on positional need, stage of development etc. his injuries complicate that further. Fully fit and wanting to come to hawthorn I think he’s an early to mid second rounder, now I think it’s more a late second or early third. Our dogs second pick would go close I suspect.

When a player is in contract like LR is and he’s openly being courted by another team then it usually means the player has been given permission to look around. Or maybe it’s all nonsense and he just really felt the need to catch a Hawthorn vs North game 😂

There's 'permission' and then there's 'actively shopping'.

WCE are in a position currently where they want as many low picks as possible and if players with any currency(Barrass/Ryan) want to explore their options, I very much doubt WCE would be discouraging them from that.

That's vastly different to pushing them out though.

I never said they’re pushing him out the door but by the sounds of things he’s definitely not untouchable. Anyways it’s still early days but as old saying goes where there’s smoke there’s fire.

Liam Ryan is so bloody exciting to watch, i would be very sad to see him go, but totally understand where we are as a club. Would not begrudge him looking for other opportunities because we won't be playing finals for a while.

Could WC also be trying to free up their contractual agreements moving forward by asking their older highly paid players to have a look if they want to.

If Ryan was to leave I understand why he would be sounding out Hawthorn with his relationships at the club.

But truth be told I'd be livid if Hawthorn handed over a good pick for a 28 year old at this point of our rebuild. Nothing against Ryan but injuries and age it just isn't a good fit right now.

Well then lucky for you there's no 28 year old involved in this discussion.
Ah yeah you're right would be 27 next year not 28. Point still stands, we might be a good fit for Ryan if he were to leave but we are not in the position to go all in on 1 player.

Hypothetically if WC were targeting one of our young WA players trying to get them to go home I wouldn't be against packaging a player and pick/pick upgrade for Ryan, would allow us to still hit the draft hard enough.

In just a straight pick swap would be to expensive and risky right now.

Early to mid 2nd will end up in the 30's.

That is a fire sale price.

It’s really not, he’s coming off a full season of injuries. Go look at our deal for Tom Mitchell last year the pies didn’t pay his Brownlow medal price they paid on his latest output price. Reality is Ryan has only kicked 30 goals once is his whole career. Hardly screams out top 25 pick to be honest.

He's not just a forward and offers so much more. Played higher up the ground, he's our best kicking going inside 50. Great vision. Arguably our fastest player.
I actually like him off the back of the square.
