Good job Shiela!

What's his profile like in Melbourne, outside HFC? (I'm from Perth).

I get the feeling he could retire a 5-6 Premiership, 350 game player & most interstate fans wouldn't have a clue who you were talking about...

Has to be the most unheralded (widely and within the fan base) member of the current side and certainly of the threepeat side. No nonsense, plays his role, club leader and champion clubman. You build sides off the back of blokes like Shiels. Glad he’s ours a bit longer.

But he has no x factor or flair.

Why do we persist with him.

Not best 22.

;)

Think he went to a new level this year, was disappointed in his 2017 expecting him to take that next step but he was great this season. One of my favourites and over the moon to have extend with the club.

To be fair, people said the same things about Tom Murphy.

To be fair Tom Murphy wasn’t a vice captain of the club and a consistently first picked player in a side that won three premierships.

"People" may have done, but without meaning to disrespect the efforts that Murphy put in during his time at the club, this is needlessly disparaging about Shiels. This isn't aimed directly at you, Beandip, but this sort of sentiment crops up all of the time on this board, and it's absolutely unwarranted.

Shiels is a three-time premiership player who has legitimately been in the best 22 for years, and has won individual awards within the club - yes, including best clubman, but also best first year player - in a year when he was pulled into the side early due to injuries, and he was the youngest player taken in the draft.

Sure, he doesn't have the showy flair of some players - but that was never the sort of player he was or is pretending to be. He's very much in the mould of Sewell, not Buddy. He's a solid player who is an important cog in the game plan, and he's consistently gained statistics for the role he plays, particularly with 1% actions, and his tackling is elite.

It is rather tiring to see people taking potshots at a player who quietly goes about it. Not everyone has the responsibility of being the goal scorer, and not everyone can make the game-saving touch of the ball on the goal line - but the match is played over four quarters. You don't have to make the highlights reel to be crucial to the team. If he's not laying those tackles in the midfield, and if he's not shutting down players, then the ball doesn't get to those elite players that we've been so lucky to have.

It is unfortunate for Shiels that Langford didn't develop in the way that was expected; when Langford was given the tagging role, Shiels had a great season. Without Langford, Shiels has returned to his previous status as the tagger.

Well deserved contract extension - and with a decade at Hawthorn, it's good to see his experience staying at the club. Knowledge of how the club operated during the dip and fightback in 09-12, and the hunger for 13-15 will be invaluable for our younger players moving forwards.

Also “Shiels is going to have to improve his game or he’ll be replaced by that 18 year old we picked at pick 108 on the rookie list.”

He’s a rock in our team, criminally underrated by our own supporters.

He may be a B+ player at best but he certainly had a couple of A grade games this year.

Have a feeling that as our midfield grows stronger, Shiel will get off the leash a little more and we will see more 30+ possession games.

He hasmy vote for next captain

If it's often hard to see exactly what he's been doing on the field as a supporter - valuable roles though they may be, how are his teammates going to respond to his play? Or do you think that completely irrelevant?
With so many classy players on the list, many of whom already display great leadership qualities, why would you go that route with Shiela?
We really don't need a Vanders type period of stewardship in my opinion.
