Draft Profile Liam Stocker

I ted to agree with Paul Roos on this one, he's getting roughed up by bigger opponents..
"It was a frustrating and, overall, unsettling 2018 for Jacob Weitering, who played just 14 senior games due to a thigh injury and a comeback through the VFL. But the No. 1 draft pick clearly struggled for confidence during games as opponents ruffled him up. Weitering was also thrown up forward while AFL great Paul Roos suggested he be played on a wing. Hopefully for Blues fans Weitering can recapture the form he showed early in his AFL career and Bolton can lock his key-position talent into one spot for the entire season."

BEST 22

The last half dozen games of 2018 saw Jacob recapture some good form.

Opposition fans seem to have amnesia that some of those games even exist.

Against Freo round 13, 22 disposals 7 marks.
Against Hawthorn round 18, 23 disposal 8 marks (7 of which were contested)
Also played well against Gold Coast.

Jacob, from time to time, has some confidence problems. So he is not the finished article. But for heaven's sake, Paul Roos and his ilk, can go and get stuffed. Give the kid time. He has been a young KPP in a very bad team.

LET ME REPEAT FOR THE 100TH TIME:

- Alex Rance in his first 3 seasons played just 25 AFL games (0 in first year, 15 second year, and 10 third year)
- Jeremy McGovern did not play a single AFL game until he was 22 years old
- Jacob Weitering has played 56 AFL in his first 3 years, with some purple patches in his 1st and 3rd years. He turned 21 two weeks back.

Carlton finish 14 and Crows finish top 4 then its break even trade if you want to look at it that way. We are looking at it bringing in two quality players with one pick. Stocker being one of them and most likely trade first pick 2019 for an established player. Crows will have a hit in the draft but we already got the two players we wanted.

Draft numbers mean nothing, especially if the Crows draft a Jack Watts type and we draft another Patrick Cripps type.

It's all about the players; likely 3 of them. Stocker and Adelaide ?? and Carlton ??

Heck, we are almost certain to trade the Adelaide 1st round pick for a ready-made player (aka next year's Dylan Shiel, whoever that may be). So the comparison becomes even more complicated.

Basically, we liked Liam Stocker a lot. It is up to the kid to prove that he is worth it.

Weitering didn't earn games though. He was gifted them by having little competition

He has been a young KPP in a very bad team

Which helps his stats

The Stoker deal was bad management from Silvagni. Let's say Carlton finish 17th and Adelaide finish 7th, it means that pick 2 swapped for pick 12 and 22.The draft calculator says 12 and 22 are worth pick 4, so Carlton lose the value between pick 2 and 4. https://www.draftguru.com.au/pick-value-calculator#12,22

What if Stocker turns out to be a Luke Parker type player and the Crows draft a lemon? What then?

Carlton does not want to hit the 2019 draft; we are too young as it is. This trade was the Blues wanting, in their eyes, 2 top 10 players in the 2018 draft. Rebuilding via the draft is now over. Next phase is trading and free-agency.

Sure, Carlton took on risk. We await the results.

Weitering played 14 senior games this year.

Nothing was gifted to him. He spent time down at a lower level.

Alex Rance played 10 senior games in his 3rd year, every single game of which Richmond lost. Was he gifted games in 2010?

Strange attitude IMhO, by Carlton

Still waiting for a name.....

It is shocking how much of the non-Carlton football world has written off Weitering as a bust.

Ground-hog day having to explain no he actually played some good games 2nd of this year.

I reckon he will be a excellent player for us in the Chris Langford / Mal Michael style.

What is more interesting is some of the persistent trolls on this board, was amusing at first, but now they are really struggling

Which world beating backman did Rance displace?

Weitering played from day dot because he’s got rare composure and skills very few backmen (let alone first year KPD’s) have. His biggest weakness at this stage is his ability one-one-one, which he started to improve towards the end of the year. He’s always been an elite interceptor and reads the game well both defensively and offensively.

Rance was the opposite. His decision-making and skills took years to get up to the requisite standard. Even now he’s not a guy you’d like kicking to a stationary target out of defence. Richmond backed him in though because he was good defensively, athletic, and Richmond were going through their own list rejuvenation and needed to blood young players.

Rance took years to turn into the defender he is today, so there’s no reason Weitering can’t get to the same standard given he’s shown more than Rance did at the same age, albeit as a slightly different style defender.

Rance was mostly playing thirds, not being gifted senior games. Remember?

Carlton fans have said this what feels like dozens of times in this thread alone

Weitering played some 2nds games this year.

Do you realise that?

Played 14 senior games.

Do you still believe he was gifted games?

Please, admit default, and move on to discussing Liam Stocker as noted by the thread title.

The answer is he wasn’t good enough to get games, which is why he had extended periods in VFL in his first few years of AFL football.

‘Gifted games’ implies his form wasn’t up to scratch. The reality was Weitering was exceptional in his first year, and was universally lauded.

You’re trying to re-write history.

I confess I don't follow Carlton closely but was it not because Bolton in all his wisdom moved wetts forward and essentially stuffed him up? After previously bossing it in his natural defensive position

Yep, Marchbank came in and Weitering was moved forward to create another scoring option.

In hindsight it was a pretty poor move, and was probably one of the reasons Weitering lost some of his confidence, but we seem to have learnt and he hasn’t really left defence since the second half of 2017.

I don’t doubt he’ll go forward on occasion when he’s had a few more years in the system, but it’s less of a necessity with McGovern coming in.

No one's saying he's not a good player.I'm saying he has been played too much too early. Most key position talls don't play much at all in their first few years. He doesn't enjoy playing because he's getting roughed up by bigger players. He should have been played on a wing or played sparingly. He was fine when he was drafted, now he's injured alot and doesn't enjoy playing.
