He goes in hard to win the ball and is a damned good kick. Definitely could be considered the Armfield upgrade I reckon.

That being said, I would like to see the club give Denis another year just so that we can be 100% sure that Sumner has fully recovered from his navicular injury.

Very much the wildcard.....Great speed with plenty of tricks.......but that body.

Welcome Liam........and look forward to a great Winter.

Plays the game of football quite well doesn't he?

There's a lot of hyperbole about bringing in four fringe players but you really have to contextualise it.

In GWS' first two years they rotated the whole list to see which young players could play. Those that emerged as the stronger youngsters became permanent fixtures; the likes of Cameron, Shiel, Treloar, Coniglio, Haynes, Smith, Tomlinson, Ward, Scully etc etc. The rest were in and out quite a lot.

As GWS gained a bit of momentum, the side became more rigid and there was less experimenting with players - particularly in areas where they were strong (aka small forwards). It's easy to fall by the wayside in a successful team. During those years Sumner spent a lot of time on the sidelines and subsequently couldn't show his wares in the seniors.

Ahern and Pickett, two of their top picks from last year couldn't crack one game between them as small forwards which shows the incredible depth GWS currently have.

Seems a pretty instant upgrade on Tutt and I was pleasantly surprised at his composure under pressure.

Could end up playing quite a bit of footy next year.

**** me dead, has he got some toe! Sumner love is like no other love.........

Will start as a small forward but will move onto a wing. Has real xfactor and skill. Just needs to get his body right hut like others have said could be best of the lot

Whoever said he is a "wildcard" really summed it up quite well.

From what I have seen thus far, this kid could be anything if he wants to train hard & follow the coach's instructions intently. He has pace, is a good kick and can take a mark, my biggest question mark over him is his consistency. As a young player, you would expect a little of this but Sumner tends to drift in and out of games, it's a concentration thing for mine. He is not at all tall so he has to have an impact every week whether it be directly on the scoreboard or by being part of the link-up, he is not afraid to apply a tackle either.

Get his mind in the right place all of the time (a decent haircut won't hurt either) and we may well be rewarded with that small crumbing-goal-kicking forward we have lacked since Betts left.

That pace is genuinely exciting and highly important with the way the game is played now. If he can get his body right, he could prove to be the pick of the bunch (and I'm a big fan of Plowman). I see him playing half-forward with stints on the wing. Sumner on one wing and Boekhorst on the other.

This sounds like average recruiting to me. Why add to your strengths? Ok you could argue that you can then on-trade them.....but we have paid peanuts so that is not a good argument. Or maybe they just got given FAR TOO MANY picks by the fat bastard.

how is his defensive game? We need to seriously upgrade our forward defensive pressure

Thought it was handy that he listed Daisy Thomas as one of his idols ... now he can train along side the man himself.
All of a sudden we could have an interesting forward line in 2016 with Daisy, Dre, Sumner, Kerridge and Jaksch.
