The Liberal Democrats party will have to change its name after losing a High Court bid to overturn new electoral laws.

The case was sparked by the Liberal Party's challenge to the Liberal Democrats over the use of the word "Liberal" in its party name.

The High Court today found the electoral laws, which allow an established party to challenge a newer party over the use of the same words in its name, were valid.

The High Court delivered the result quickly, to enable the situation to be resolved ahead of the next election.

their plan b is already in motion

they applied back in feb to register the Liberty and Democracy Party name, and it would be cleared in a week

Oh yeah its those f***ers not the new liberals

They have already changed their name (or are in the process of doing it)

Their new moniker will be TNL

Got my 'how to vote' card from the local Liberal MP in the mail yesterday, with the helpful "don't confuse us with the Liberal Democrats warning".

Pretty clear this legislation was aimed at any party that might actually attempt to live up to the principles that the Liberal Party suggests by their name but not their actions.

An acronym is a stupid name for a party. They could have at least changed it to "Towards National Liberty" or something.

I read that they think the transitional use of TNL has allowed it to retain the brand recognition over.

Reality is few knew what the new liberals were other than disaffected liberals thanks to the name. TNL doesn't have the same effect.

They definitely should have thought up something new

The ex liberals going full cooker and trying to convince people who are not so stupid they are pro human rights is a gift that keeps on giving and thankfully some of the gullible
are going to die soon and not be replaced.

If we are elected, we will ensure everyone can destroy the planet with garbage and pollution, as is our capitalist right!
It's their right not to pay tax to ensure they can use good roads, not be harassed by beggars, not to be victims of crime, not to deal with civil unrest.

There's always the option of living off the grid. Oh wait that doesn't pay for their priviledged lifestyle lol.

That bimbo candidate on WA with the "Tax is Theft" on her dress at the party launch is another good example of how they can't tackle issues like adults.

This sort of bullshite grinds my gears a little.

They're a Libertarian party. Nothing wrong with that (philosophically) as it gives a voting option to the cohort of voters who are into that sort of thing.

But FFS, call yourselves "The Libertarian Party" or something!

"Oh no, we can't do that. We might get fewer votes unless we hoodwink uniformed voters with a misleading name"

So you don't really have faith in your cause then?

This one especially, as there are better known Liberal Democrats parties around the world with a very contrasting policy outlook.

Don't forget that it is also their right to demand help from the government that they have starved of funding when to crisis actually comes.

Grifting hypocrites.
