The AFL made so many promises regarding Colonial Stadium and failed to keep them. At this rate Wayne Jackson could be our next Prime Minister with his peculiar talent for bare-faced lies.
- They (the AFL) said that lock outs would be tranferred to the MCG - NOT TRUE
- They said that there would be no seats with obsured vision - NOT TRUE
- They said everyone who wanted to go can get in - NOT TRUE
- They said it would be ready in time for the opening of the season - NOT TRUE
- They said that it would be easy to get to, easy to get in to and easy to get home from - NOT TRUE
- They said the Stadium would be so wonderful that fans would quickly forget about Waverley - NOT TRUE
- They said that $14 worth of General Admission ticket would be enough to get you into the Stadium - NOT TRUE
- They said it would not be an Eltist plaything but a sports venue for all football fans - NOT TRUE
- They said that they would do everything possible to support footy in SE Melbourne after the closure of Waverley - NOT TRUE
- They said Colonial Stadium would be the ideal venue to showcase the game to the rest of the world - NOT TRUE
- They told the members of Essendon, Bulldogs and St Kilda that there would be guaranteed seats (and good seats too) for everyone - NOT TRUE
- They told clubs like Melbourne, Richmond and Geelong that playing home games at Colonial would make them more money and increase their membership bases - NOT TRUE
What the freakking hell is going on here ?
We all accept that with a brand new stadium there were always going to be 'teething problems' but what about the absolutely disgraceful litany of complete lies the AFL fed the fans all through 1999 to try and 'sell' the stadium to the fans ?
It is just such a depressingly familar line these days. We get told something in all sincerity by people in authority (and they keep a straight face while doing it), then it turns out that what we were told was just another lie.
Like when SOCOG told us that 'there is a ticket for EVERBODY at OUR Olympic Games' (!)
Like when John Howard told us that he would 'never ever' introduce a consumption tax
Where does it stop ? - and why do people in authority (be it the AFL, the government, whatever) continue to treat ordinary people like fools and tell BARE FACED WHOPPERS STRAIGHT TO OUR FACES ?
