Re: Lies Lies Damn Statistics

Doesn't make much difference, as we have 44 players (including rookies).

The average age with rookies is around 24.5. Excluding #35 and #9 is is 24.

Excluding rookies you're looking at 25.1 yrs vs 24.6 yrs.

Re: Lies Lies Damn Statistics

Dream Team Scores against Cats. These points can be a useful way of comparing total statistics.

As far as scoring dreamteam points against the cats
our top 4 scorers hold their own. If we had Ball it would be 5. We are short of four players who can score better than 100.
2 Nicks, Kosi, DalSanto , and Gram are the players we are relying on.
Well done to Jones, Gilbert, Eddy, and Raph for outshining the stars.

Given that taggers and defenders don't get rated properly by dreamteam points I would rate our worst players as - Gwilt, X, Riewoldt and Gardner

Sam Fisher 116 - 2 Cats scored better than this
Lenny 112
Joey 108 - 3 Cats scored better than this
BJ 108
So far not so bad but next down is
Jones 93 - 9 Cats scored more than 99
King 84
Gilbert 83
Schneider 83
Eddy 75 12 Cats scored better than this.
Raph 64
Kosi 63
Harvey 63
DalSanto 61
Gram 60
Milne 58
Gardner 55
Mc Qualter 54
Nick Riewoldt 54
X 50
Blake 46
Gwilt 42
Max 17

The bits I found interesting is that X had one more bounce than Sam F - even though he played only 8 games (Sam 25).

Similarly with Gardi - only 9 games vs Kosi's 22 (and noting limited TOG during these games).

Re: Lies Lies Damn Statistics

I've noticed Kingy gets the odd tackle in. They look like they would be felt as well.
I didn't know they counted the ones where he comes over the top of a pack and tackles 4 players (including his own guys)! :D

But a 3.5 tackles per game average from your ruckman is bloody good - shows how much of a team player he is.

Haha I have noticed Kingy do this everytime he is around a pack. Always makes me laugh :thumbsu:

well thats why I was surprised by some comments about Gardiner and X towards the end of the season.. x does get the ball and bounce, he just didn't play that much this season.. Gardiner though I thought started off the year very well IMO and outclassed King on a few occasions.. I am surprised that Fish had one less bounce though obviously... :)

Re: Lies Lies Damn Statistics

Unfortunately I am obsessed with stats, and after reading a press article noticed that Roo is close to being in the Top 10 all-time Saints goalkickers. I was also surprised to see Milney is already there!!!

Player Games Goals
1 Lockett, Tony 183 898
2 Mohr, Bill 195 735
3 Loewe, Stewart 321 594
4 Gehrig, Fraser 145 390
5 Breen, Barry 300 308
5 Davis, Allan 173 308
7 Neale, Kevin 256 301
8 Everitt, Peter 180 299
9 Milne, Stephen 153 298
10 Young, George 108 284
11 Winmar, Nicky 230 283
12 Riewoldt, Nick 146 279
13 Young, William 94 274
14 Bennett, Peter 103 258
15 Baldock, Darrel 119 237
16 Smith, Ross 234 230
17 Harvey, Robert 371 211

Call me ignorant or whatever. But who the hell are George and Will Young. Can someone enlighten me.

Re: Lies Lies Damn Statistics

I am super impressed you know who Peter Bennett is.

William “Bill” Young : 1956-61 94 games 274 goals. (b: 6 Jun 1931 179 cms 73 kgs). A frail looking full-forward from Stratford who was only 11 and a half stone. He was a prolific goalkicker in country football and a fine all-round sport who once top scored for a Victorian country eleven against the English tourists and was also a star cyclist. Many VFL clubs chased him and Melbourne's Norm Smith tried to persuade him to tear up the form he eventually signed with St Kilda. He couldn't get a clearance until the third round of 1956 and he had a slow start which sparked criticism that he was too light and too old (almost 24). But his uncanny feel for kicking goals proved them wrong and he topped the VFL goalkicking with 56 in his first year. He scored the same tally in each of his next two seasons and headed the Saints' goalkicking from 1956-60. He was credited with inventing the reverse punt shot at goal. He represented a Victorian B team in 1959.

George Alfred Young (b 3 Feb 1949) - Before Young came to St Kilda he played 76 WAFL games with Subiaco as well as representing Western Australia at interstate football. His performance at the 1972 Perth Carnival had earned him All-Australian selection. He debuted for St Kilda in 1973 and played his first couple of seasons as a half forward flanker. In 1975 he played at full forward and topped the club's goalkicking every season before leaving after the 1978 season. His best tally was 70 goals in 1978, a year in which he managed a bag of 10 versus Fitzroy in their round 12 encounter. Young also played two Sheffield Shield matches for the Western Australian cricket team in the 1972/73 Australian cricket season. He was a left-handed batsman and made a century in the second match, an innings of 125 against South Australia at the WACA Ground.

Re: Lies Lies Damn Statistics

Milney is actually pretty remarkable for a small forward when you look at his games to goals ratio. It's actually better than Stewart Leowe, a tall full forward! If he maintains that average for his full career, and gets to, say, 200 games, he'll have 400ish goals, which is just astounding.

Re: Lies Lies Damn Statistics

Jason Blake has snuck into the AFL top 8 for Marks this season.

Nick Dal Santo has the most Kicks in the AFL so far and is 5th highest for contested possessions.

Joey gives away the most frees in St Kilda, probably due to having tackled more then everyone else in the AFL except Brett Kirk, and Shane O Bree. Our three highest tacklers are Joey, Ball and Jones. --- Where's Lenny?

The only AFL players with better disposal efficiency than Kosi have 12 disposals or less for the year.

Grammy is leading the AFL for kicks into the 50. I just wish there was someone there he was kicking it to.

Though I'm not really sure what it means Zac is our best player for 1 percenters.

It means the Zac Attack is not just 1 goal but king of 1 percenters! Now he just needs to keep opponents to 1 goal or less and take at least 1 screamer and average 1 bounce per game....:p

Lenny missed Round 1 - a slogfest against Sydney.

As you can see there, all other players in that list have played every game. Hayes is averaging effectively the same as Luke Ball at No.2 - which is about where you'd expect him to be wouldn't you?

Re: Lies Lies Damn Statistics

Late mail - the comeback against Hawthorn (at 1/2 time) was the fifth best in the club's entire history :

1 48 St Kilda 1.8 (14) vs Richmond 9.8 (62) 1975 11 Wav

2 34 St Kilda 2.8 (20) vs Melbourne 7.12 (54) 1974 2 MCG

3 30 St Kilda 4.8 (32) vs Hawthorn 9.8 (62) 1976 12 OO

4 29 St Kilda 4.2 (26) vs Footscray 9.1 (55) 1972 3 Mor

5 28 St Kilda 6.3 (39) vs Hawthorn 10.7 (67) 2008 16 TD

I should've started following the Saints earlier - four big comebacks in five seasons.
Actually, no it wasn't.

You've only managed to miss the best comeback in our entire history!

Round 7, 1994.

Sydney v St. Kilda (SCG)

3/4 Time Score
Sydney - 15.6.96
St. Kilda - 8.10.58.

Guess what, Sydney kicked the first goal in the last quarter - we still won.

Final Score
Sydney - 17.7.109
St. Kilda - 16.14.110

Now, that is the best comeback of all-time as far as I am concerned - didn't even make your list! (I know, because we were only 25 points behind at half-time!!)

Surely you know of this game?
