The years following the 95 flag Parkin once stated that a team needs a 20-25% turnover of players every season.
Looking back we failed to do that and became stale.
For this reason I think we need to start looking for Fev's replacement now!
Find a FF and start grooming him alongside Fev,so ideally when Fev's in the twilight the young gun is hitting his straps.
Let's not wait for Fev to retire and then say"Siht we've got no FF!!"

Completely agree with your premise. We have to start planning for Fev's retirement and the sooner the better. The bit in bold is the problem.

I'm still in the minority here but I still think we need to give Edwards a go up forward.

Sure, when he has been in the senior team for his handful of games he has not looked brilliant, but he has been servicable in each and every game.

He is a forward target, so we need to develop him there. In the seniors we have played him as a link-man (similar to Fisher) but whilst he has looked OK I don't think he is suited to that role.

Put him up forward, in the square and leave him there for a while. Sure, he may not make it in the end, but we will not find out if we do not give him sufficient opportunities to prove himself.

People calling for his head need to look at the facts a little closer. He's been around for a few years already but he is still very young (21/22) so he still has time.

We don't have many options up forward so I think we need to give him an opportunity to show what he has to offer. Put him in the forward 50, maybe closer to goal than Fev, and give him a chance. Even if it means resting Cloke for a week or even longer, a team lacking genuine forward options cannot afford not to try one of the only options they currently have on the list.

I don't think you'll find too many to disagree here.

I dare say next draft we will be looking at the best aviable with our first pick.....hoping like hell that it's a good key forward.

There is also a chance that if Hampson continues to improve that we may trade a ruckman.......possibly Hampson, but maybe Jacobs, for a 1st or 2nd round pick (depending on which of those it is and the need/perceived value) to Brisbane (oh the irony :D) or GC.

I think you're right J, but the sad fact is that guys coming onto the list have only got a few years to prove themselves.

Jake, due to injury and form hasn't had an extended run in the seniors, but when he has had a crack has shown glimpses of talent. What he hasn't then done is back that up in the Ants with consistent form.

I get the impression that Fev's forward line would be a hrad one to share as the second forward, and still make a name for yourself, unless you are Bradhsaw, Brown etc.

I have to disagree. we still have a couple of years to find a Fev replacement. Despite his age, Fev would still have at least five years left him, barring injury of course.

Kreuz will develop into a strong CHF. jacobs and hampson to share ruck duties.

that's the future I see.

What's Warnock doing...cutting up the oranges...oh boy that's easy money!

fmd, forgot about him. I'm not holding my breath on ruckmen we have recruited from other clubs.

If he does come good, then I would imagine it would be warnock and hampson/jacobs ruck combo. Kruez just seem to skillful to waste as a battering ram.

Sorry to alarm you guys but Fev is in the twilight of his career. We can use the heal injury as an excuse... The reality is that he's in his eleventh season. Much as we'd like to see him play until he's 33 like Sticks or Richo, the modern game won't allow him to dominate for much longer. Just look at Lucas and Lloyd at Essendon.

Let the selection process begin:

Cloke:
Tried as a ruckman, now as a forward. He's a dour trier but sadly would really struggle to get a game in any top 8 side.

Fisher: Can't get a game. :( So unless his form turns around, pass. One of my favourites before his kicking failed him...

Kreuzer: A bit of Simon Madden about him. Could end up kicking 500 goals throughout his career but will ruck much of the time.

Hartlett: If only. 5th year at the club. Much as I'd like him to succeed, I suspect the only reason he wasn't delisted last year (paying out a small contract) was in case his brother Hamish miraculously slipped through to pick 6.

O'hAilpin: Out of favour following the infamous incident. Has been spending some time in the forward line at the Bullants. I still think he lacks some footy smarts but might offer more in the short term than Cloke.

Tiller: Just a kid, too early to call.

Stanton: See Tiller. From youtube, he's a reasonable size but he's not even on our list yet.

Austin: A definite wildcard. "But he's a defender" - rubbish, he's played 5 AFL games. Provided he can mark and kick, he'd be happy enough to play anywhere.

Edwards:
Time to deliver. Played a handful of games last year, never to be seen again.

Hampson: Has the size to tag-team in the ruck with Kreuzer. Can that freakish athleticism we keep hearing about translate into a goalkicking machine?

Waite: Kicked 5 against Hawthorn once. Seems mired in the backline.

So...

Kreuzer, Tiller, Waite excluded most on the above list won't be around in 2 years time. Austin will probably survive but this is his 3rd year on the list, so he better deliver soon... GC raised Hampson will be a target for the new team.

I suspect the Cloke experiment will continue for a few more weeks. Aside from taking a couple of marks deep, I don't think he has enough of a presence - Imagine if Wiggins were 3 inches taller! There are calls to drop Jacobs and let Cloke pinch-hit in the ruck. For me, this is a backward step. Jacobs is a better ruckman - if Cloke can't cut it as a forward, sorry time's up. Dropping Jacobs for Hampson doesn't solve much, both are at similar stages.

Setanta, Edwards and Hartlett could all be delisted at the end of the year along with Fisher and Cloke. This would be a blow to our big man stocks but they're not achieving much at the Bullants. Time to pick one of the 3 and give them one last shot. Flip a coin!

Of the players not in our current 22, I'd carry Hampson and/or Austin for the rest of the year. We can carry an extra tall, we just need to be smarter with midfield rotations. Rather than grind out core players into the ground, we need to think of our team as a nation of midfielders. We need a dozen or so players capable of rotating through the centre square and forward/back instead of spelling our inexperienced players on the bench for extended periods. Judd/Murphy/Betts/Simpson/Robinson/Garlett/Houlihan/Hadley to rest in the forward line, Stevens/Carrazzo/Scotland/Johnson/Gibbs/Anderson/Armfield/Browne/Grigg/Russell/Joseph to rest in the backline. Then if Hampson/Austin/Jacobs spend 40% of the game on the bench it's not such a liability.

Summary: Hampson and Austin have enough potential to be worth carrying in the seniors. Roll the dice on Setanta/Edwards/Hartlett. Jacobs must continue rucking. I miss Brad Fisher. :)

Like that....and I too would like to see Humphry up forward but then again he is the worlds tallest rover.

Yeah I mentioned this point last year. Because they take so long to develop and there were some good key forwards avaliable in the last draft it would have been good to get some.

Perhaps edwards and kreuzer are our future?

i thnk Rhys O Keefe could be a good forward, great kick like fev, good body just maybe lacks a little pace.. but could be a longterm darkhorse

Surely before Edwards is even considered as a senior player, he needs to put together some consistent performances in the VFL kicking 5+goals, unless he does this very soon, l suspect he will be gone at year-end as he and Hartlett are playing for their spot on the list.

Key forwards are sooooo hard to find.

Adelaide have been trying to find one since Modra

The doggies would win the flag if they had one

A gun FF is great to watch aswell, when we were sh!t I would goto the games hoping for improvement in the young players and beacause fev could go off for 7.

This is a glaring hole in our team as there is really no one that looks likely of stepping up from our list.

We need to trade Hamma in a package deal with the GC and get a top 5 pick and hope like hell there is a quaility forward.

A year 12 student at my school Ben Griffiths is meant to go around the top 10 mark this year. He is 197cms, plays at CHF and is apparently a gun!

I play footy with his older brother, who said that melbourne have spoken to him quite a bit.

I'm not sure if the year 12s are playing at home today, but if they they are I will duck down and have a look at him.

I hope like hell that Chris Yarran makes the grade, but if for some reason he turns out to be a 'middle-of-the-road' type player, I would explore the option of entertaining Ben McKinley from the coasters.

With Garlett coming from nowhere and Betts going up a level, I highly doubt the three would ever be in the one team.

Yarran plus someone like Steven Browne being both WA boys may be enticement enough for McKinley to be traded our way.

That kind of deal has the potential to be sitting in the wings for 18-24 months as we learn more about the development of all the above-mentioned, while Fev would still be around even though closing in a little on the end of his career.

But remember, I did say I hope Yarran makes it first!

I like Mckinley

But surely if Yarran turns out to be sh!t west coast won't want him.

I don't think I said 'sh!t' as you put it.

If he is no better than Betts or Garlett, well for mine he would be disposable, but would still attract plenty of attention especially packaged with another originally based Perth lad.

Like I said I highly doubt that we would play all three at once, therefore Yarran being from Perth would be the logical player to use, if it meant fixing up the full forward problem.

But once again, let's hope he turns out to be a superstar!

Yep, one to watch. I think he is injured at the moment? Correct me if i'm wrong but hasn't played the last 2 games for the Rangers so i figured there my be an issue there.
