But this year, as you and others have said, we need a class tough midfielder, if we only have one first round pick, it has to be a midfielder, get 2 first round, the second can be used on a tall - may get another Watts?

And we don't need a ruckman??????

Ruckman generally kick into gear in their 4th or 5th year. Talls take a hell of a long time to develop unless you get a freak like Brad Ottens. If we are talking about succession planning we need to draft a ruckman at the end of the year to have someone to take over from Biglands and Hudson down the track. I agree we also need midfielders but you can still get a gun in the 2nd round (Simon Black anyone?????).

We were extremely lucky to get a player like Watts at #14, the chances of getting someone like Watts in the 2nd round are very slim. Top quality talls don't last that long ;)

Depends on the differential between the players involved & how badly the need is for a type of player. If there is a significant difference, we must draft the better player. If not too much in it, go for the position player we require.

Spot on.

Always go for the best available, if very close go or needs. Especially in 1st round and to some extent in the 2nd round.

BTW, I have never understood why more young ruckman aren't put on the rookie list considering they tend to take longer to develop. It's not like your likely to use them in the 1st couple of years & there tends to be more risk than say midfielders as to whether they will make it at AFL level.

True but history shows that if there is a ruckman showing any sort of promise he will be listed one way or the other. Of course the are cases like Hudson where clubs aren't really prepared to take a punt on someone who is older than the rookie list allows.

Its just a case of there is not much around. Thats why AIS Academy are chasing anyone tall enough to be a ruckman. If there are young ruckman out there who are decent prospects they will get AIS scolarship before a midfielder of same talent or a KPP of same talent.

They are as rare as rocking horse ****.

Hopefully, even if we don't get a priority pick, we will trade well enough to have at least two first round picks. That way we can not only draft a tall, but also a gun inside midfielder.

The vibe eminating from West Lakes however, seems to be that all we need to do is keep going along the same path, and simply allow players currently on our list to replace the retirees. Please don't let it be so.

I thought thje rule of thumb witha top ten pick is to take the best available player regardless of size, postion etc - but then refelecting of our recent no 7 opck , the character factor should be an issue.

On Rutten..

I'd like to see more of Rutten somewhere on the field at AFL level, before I pass judgement. I still think he needs an opportunity to strut his stuff - if he has any !!

Thats what I said!
first round, unless top 3, players are very close in standard, therefore goes to needs first.

Kevin Sheahn was saying tonight, there is a high number of AFL ruckmen currently playing, who came off the rookie list.
You hit it one.

Was this on Fox Footy, as I don't have Foxtel? Has always puzzled me why we don't use the rookie list to have say 2 ruckmen on it for the future. Yet we tend to go for average backup midfielders who are unlikely to have a great upside.

Kane, it was on 3AW with Gerard Healy.
Should listen to SEN1116 on-line - 24 hour sport, and most of it AFL

I must say he is not looking too bad by some reports. He is constantly listed in best players for Tigers reserves. On the weekend he was named best. By all reports he get a fair share of marks and possesions in field play. Ruckwork is a bit raw but that expected. I would really like to invest in this bloke.

He has a crack, his kicking is a bit mechanical but it can be worked on. He most definetly needs to beef up more. At least another 10 kg before he can be big enough for AFL debut. I would be keeping him for at least another year regardelss.

He will most likely go top 3.
It might not be that bloke but there is definetly a 207 cm bloke in AIS squad. I remeber reading the article a couple of weeks ago and they did mention that there is many talls in the squad and one kid is 207 cm.

If he is 209 cm at 17 how tall will he be at 21.

He will most likely go top 3.
Cameron Wood - 203cm
Fabian Deluca - brother of Carlton player 203cm
Mark Lynch - 207 cm
Brett Deludio -
Mitch Morton - WA
Lance "Buddy" Franklin (possible top 5 pick)....... WA

Sorry got mixed up with Deluca, it must be Lynch, as Morton and Franklin were not ruckmen.:(
