My dad went to school with Lindsay and he got a lot of pressure from my grandfather to be as good as him... even then it was known he would play League for Torrens... my grandfather was a life member at Torrens and wanted to adopt Lindsay at times :p

Lindsay was awarded an MBE for his services to football, a rarity for SANFL players. He was also a very handy cricketer who played for South Australia. As a Norwood supporter, one of the more interesting things about Lindsay was his decision to play his final league game at the Norwood Oval as a trubute to Bob Hank whose league career ended abruptly in a match at the Parade, courtesy of coach Di ck Jones.

I attended Lindsay's final match, it rained all day and players were covered in mud. Norwood won the tough encounter and they set up a podium on the HF flank in front of the members' stand and interviewed Lindsay as well as others such as Fred Bills. It was a nice farewell to the great man, but I've often wondered if West Torrens fans felt a little cheated he didn't play his final game at Thebarton Oval.

I can't really remember seeing Lindsay Head play, other than some archive clips on the Sunday footy show. But I do remember him as a quality panellist, always fair and certainly came across as a quality guy.

I do remember one anecdote about him ... after taking a mark he was abused (racially I believe) by the player on the mark. He went back, took his run up and planted the ball - full tilt drop kick - into the offending player's crown jewels. As far as I can recall, no one remonstrated with him. And the story certainly raised quite a laugh on the panel.

Saw a fair bit of Lindsay. He was an immaculate player, had all the skills . Particularly great stab pass.
He wasn't that quick, but knew where to go to get kicks. I always thought he looked like a big head ( no pun intended ) cocky etc. But an excellent player.

Is that code for "receiver"?

I don't think I'd say just a receiver, but he wasn't on the bottom of too many packs either. He just knew how to get the ball.
Recall one incident that sticks in my mind, someone passed the ball to him, and a couple of opposition players were bearing down on him with malice afore thought. He stood stock still, judging the ball perfectly, then turned on a dime and passed the ball off, meanwhile the two guys who were going to smash him collided with each other.

My Dad and Grandpa often talk about that incident. One of the players was Neil Kerley I believe. Dad's favourite player was Head and Grandpa's was Bob Hank. Would have been a great era to be a Torrens supporter.

It probably was Kerley, as I am a Westies supporter. Those games between West and Torrens were great.
