even his chopper goal coulda been raffled between 3 players.

Exactly,

Ling deserves all the negative attention he is receiving right now. It is my firm belief that he let his media commitments and captain hopes get in the way of his game. I now believe he has always been a pretender, we were just all blinded by large amounts of possessions.

Ling sums up our on-ball brigade...alright, but not quite good enough.

As a group, yep. But individually I reckon Corey and Bartel in particular are good enough to command a place in any midfield in the league.

What we are lacking is pace, evasive skills, ball-carrying ability, precise foot skills and a bit of X-factor. Tenace, Varcoe, Byrnes and even Batchelor might yet provide all that, but at the moment no-one is. And that's why we sometimes get smashed through the middle.

Lingy should only ever be in the middle if he is tagging the oppositions' best onballer. Even then I have my doubts.

burgoyne only got 3 possessions the previous week, thats keeping someone below their best.
Thats doing a damn fine job, but I am saying Ling still kept him below his best.

Ling had 9 clangers.

Says it all really. Looking at an old match on Classic Quarters about 3 to 4 years back against Adelaide, he's put on quite a bit of weight since then.

Ling was too slow to run with Burgoyne, that was clear.

He would have been better off running with Cornes, as Cornes is not that quick but has a big engine, which Linga could probably handle.

Give him Scotty West this week for sure!

I find that Ling doesn't have high skills under pressure and it ****s me.
Yes he can take a really good mark under pressure, but when it comes to handballing, or kicking under pressure he ****es me off something shocking.

I'll make a prediction, West will win the game for Footscray if Ling plays on him. West always slaughters Geelong and if Ling gets him it will be no different.

But Ling will point into spaces, run around a bit, huff and puff. All which qualifies apparently as "leadership material".

West will get at least 30 possessions. Put your house on it.

He has in many games this year, and his handball kick ratio is high.

He is a gun, but he won't hurt us too bad if he gets 30 disposals.

Footscray have beaten Geelong more often than not over the last 5 years, and West has starred in every single one of them. I think if he gets 30 possessions he will hurt us.

I hope I'm wrong.

West gets 30 we can still win. Brad Johson or Linsay Gilbee gets 30 and we are screwed. I think thats what he means

agreed, west is a lot like Ling, a lot of possessions, not much effectiveness. we could beat them by 60 points and west would still have his 30 possessions.

Players like Ling,West,Chad Cornes, the Bowden bozos from Richmond,Heath Scotland and Nick Stevens could easily rack up 30 possessions a game and nobody would realise. They don't do any damage with those possessions.

As Rodney Eade said earlier this year, player possession totals are the most overrated stat in footy.

With some of the above I agree, but not with West. You don't win 7 best & fairests without being able to dispose of the ball. He's a lot better than Ling and Stevens when he gets it.

i wouldnt even put him in the same breath as judd or even hodge, they hurt you with their possessions, i dont west hurts teams.

the bulldogs could lose 22 games in a season and he would still get his stats.

That's a very good point, one that gets ignored at times.

Just say the following phrase: "It's OK he doesn't hurt us" every time he gets the ball on Sunday. We'll see what happens.

That's all well and good. But DF's point has merit.

If Ling got the ball as many times as West does, there would not be a large gap in effectiveness of those disposals.

A large % of West's are handballs, or short kicks.

im not saying that he may not hurt us, im just saying that he will get his quota regardless of win, lose or draw.

and will stand out due to the 30+ possessions he will pick up, maybe not for the effectiveness of those possessions.

Yep. The key is ensuring that the guy who receives his handpasses has a Geelong player right on him instead of being 10 metres away. I don't care how good their footskills are, enough pressure and they'll make mistakes like anyone else.
