Ok so we are only missing 1884. 1890 and 1897 premiership players.

Anyone know where we can dig up the losing GF players as well? There might be some poor bastards who played in 5 losing GF's 1966,67,68,71 and 72. Dont reckon anyone would have made it 6 playing up to 1976.

I checked the excellent australianfootball.com website's SANFL section. They don't cover the 1884 or 1890 season. In 1897 they seem to suggest there was no finals series and Port were Premiers that year on the basis of being top after the H & A season. I would not be at all surprised if there is no specific GF team for those first three premierships.

Unfortunately the Trove website stops at the end of 1954 for the Advertiser so you'd have to head down to North Terrace and dig up the microfiche in the Mortlock Library for those losing GF teams. I never thought to look when I was there but did they microfiche the "Budget" as well?

Of course there were no GF's before 1898 and three times they had to play a one off final to determine who won the title that year. We lost one of them in 1889 and then won the flag the next year. how did I forget that.

Premiership results - at Adelaide Oval ie the 20 flags we won in GF's there. The 1884,1890 and 1897 premierships were won based on finishing top of the league at the end of the home and away season - ie no finals unless it was to be a tie breaker GF for the two sides that ended the season with equal number of wins. Geez we won a lot of close ones under the Fos era.

How much of the game would we recognise from back in the early years
compared to now, what with something like 200 rule changes, kicking , tackling, passing ?
Would be interesting if any olde film footage around that is still viable to watch----- pre 1970's

Put this in another thread but is a bit of info re premiership players. Dave Boyd's passing along with maybe 10 others the last 4 or 5 years of that golden generation of 1950-1970 has made me want to put this list together for awhile. I will stick it in here for now.

Won the First 7 under Fos and Mots captain coach era 1951, 1954, 1955, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959
John Abley (died 19 August 2011)
Dave Boyd (died 15 December 2017)
Ted Whelan (died 22 June 2015)

Won the 6 in a row guys that missed out on 1951
Geof Motley (+ 1962, 1963, 1965)
Neville Hayes (+ 1962, 1963)
Lloyd Zucker (died 21 September 2009)

Won the First 6 under Fos
Fos Williams ( died 1 September 2001)
--------------------------------------------------------------- Above the line are in the PAFC Hall of Fame
Marx Kretschmer

Won the First 5 under Fos
Harold McDonald (died 12 June 1999)

Won the last 5 in a row under Fos
Tom Garland

Won 6 out of the 10 under Fos and Mots
Peter Obst 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1962, 1963 (died 11 May 2017)

Won 5 out of the 10 under Fos and Mots
Dave Gill ....... 1958, 1959, 1962, 1963, 1965
Don Thompson 1955, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959 (died 29 July 2015)
Tom Williams 1955, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959

There are about 18 players from that 1950-70 era that have won 3 or 4 of those 10 premierships. I think 5 of these 18 players have passed away in the last 4 or 5 years.

The premiership squad for the 1884, 1890 and 1897 flags. The first 3 flags were won under the League system ie if you topped the table at the end of the season you won the flag, no finals like the Euro soccer leagues. The first official grand final was 1898 but 2 'grand finals' had to held in 1889 and 1894 ( they had to replay that one the next weekend as both sides kicked 4 goals and only goals were counted) to separate the teams who won the same number of game at the end of those seasons.

PORT ADELAIDE'S senior team is preparing for yet another grand final decider this weekend.

It what will be the club's 62nd official appearance in an end-of-season decider, the Magpies will face the Double Blues for a chance at premiership glory. Port Adelaide has a long history in grand finals, having played in the very first way back in 1889 against Norwood. Back then, Port was nicknamed the 'Magentas' and wore blue and magenta striped jackets.

In the early days of South Australian football, it was customary for the team that finished top of the ladder to be awarded the premiership, but when Port and Norwood tied that year, a one-off decider was played. Unfortunately, Norwood took the title, winning the decider 7 goals to 5. Port next battled South in the 1898 final. Again falling short, this time by 24 points, and in 1901 against Norwood by four. In fact for a club that has a storied reputation of success, Port Adelaide lost its first three deciders.

First success
Port Adelaide tasted grand final success - and its fourth premiership overall - in 1903.

There, after losing the first 'final' to South, the Magpies as minor premiers were entitled to a 'challenge' match, which they won by seven points. Disappointment came again in 1904 and 1907 against Norwood, 1905 against North, and 1909 against West. Only one other premiership for the decade - in 1906 - would grace the halls at Alberton. It was only at the turn of the decade that Port really began to build its reputation as a finals performer.

1902 was the first year of the Magpies wharf pylon design jumper.

I've checked once. Port still has more top-2 finishes than Norwood and Sturt combined.

Neil Kerley talks about the infamous goal post lopping after the 1958 grand final.

I don't know if knuckles mentioned it, but the Adelaide oval curator ( who was probably Arthur Lance back then ) used to live in a house that was inside the oval grounds and just behind the mound at the river end.
He must have been a very heavy sleeper as the echo of the axe hitting the goal post would have been incredibly noisy at night in an empty stadium.

The club says 36 firsts and 36 seconds but I make it 35 seconds = 71

Not sure what history books you have been reading but I make it

Norwood 30 firsts + 22 seconds = 52 (Pre 1898 official grand finals they finished 11 firsts and 6 seconds but in 1889 they beat in a final Port to determine first place and also in 1894 beat South in 2 finals first one was a draw 4 goals 8 behinds each and then won the replay)
Sturt 15 firsts + 11 seconds = 26 ( all grand finals)

I was quoting by memory. You are probably right. Still, 78-71 is very close.

Do you know why your number (71) is different than the club's (72)?

No I don't know why, as I used ther list of 61 grand finals + this year's GF and add to them old League system placings. So either their list of 61 was wrong and should have been 62 before this years GF or they double counted the 1889 2nd as both a GF and a 2nd in the League system.

I think we had an advantage 68-67 in 1996; at least, if Wikipedia and my math are both correct. That might explain my earlier mistake.

P.S.: Wikipedia has us with 36 premiers and 37 runners-up (73): https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_SANFL_premiers

GremioPower I found the missing 2 second places. Yes Port in the SANFL have finished 2nd 37 times. The 2 missing places can be put down to administrators stupidity in trying different finals systems.

After 1897 the SANFL and V/AFL introduced Grand Finals. In 1897 and 1924 the VFL had a round robin finals series between the top 4 sides and the side at the top of that finals ladder was the premiers, and others were given 2nd place, 3rd placed and 4th placed and therefore there was no Grand Final.

In the SANFL as noted previously there was no Grand Final 1897 and for some dopey reason in 1923, 1925 and 1926 there were mickey mouse grand finals which didnt really count. This is what the history books of grand finals say

1923 Norwood 9.12 d North Adelaide 6.4
1924 West Torrens 9.12 d Sturt 8.10
1925 Norwood 8.4 d West Torrens 7.9
1926 Sturt 9.10 d North Adelaide 8.10

But Port were given 2nd place in 1925 and 1926. I had seen that Port were given 2nd place in those 3 years but I assumed that it was like the VFL system and didn't dig deeper.

Once again thank's to the great work done by John Devaney who immigrated to Australia as a teenager in the mid 1960's then returned to the UK in around 1980, but kept up his love affair with Aussie rules in the days of no internet and no TV coverage, he sets it all out in his old fullpointsfooty.net site which covered footy from all across Australia, which he sold in 2012 because he couldn't keep up with everything and no money was in it and whilst australiafootball.com took over his site it didn't transfer all his stuff across. But thanks to webarchive we have a lot of his magnificent stuff.

It is not unsound the old system. It simply puts bigger weight on the H&A season. Finals are limited to determine the champions; everything else is settled by the H&A. It is only different.

Losing a grand final in 1925 and 1926 and not finishing 2nd because Port finished 2nd in the home and away season and even though you beat Port in the finals is stupid especially after 20 years experience of a better finals system. If it wasn't stupid they would of kept it. Next post I will explain the Paige McIntyre system introduced in 1931 around Australia and is the basis for the finals system today.

It is odd and might be confusing. I will give you that, but there is a logic behind it.

The McIntyre system is great, and the AFL version of the system is absolutely fantastic; but it has nothing to do with the issue — which is related to the final table in the end of the season. The League simply disregarded the finals, but its champion.

Ford Fairlane can this thread be stickied as it has info re premiership teams and GF's and is a good reference source, especially checking how many flags the greats of the 1950-70 era in particular won, as they are now getting to the age where they are passing away regularly, unfortunately.

This article about Port players who have played Test or state cricket was put up on Boxing Day last year. As I said at the time, I knew Ernie Jones played footy and cricket, had a great record in both, in particular winning lots of flags in footy, but was never aware that he played a year for Port. He help with the transformation of Port as we had some bad years in the last 1890's - 1896 we finished bottom of a 5 team comp and in 1900 finished bottom of a 6 team comp. The only other time we won the wooden spoon was 1886 finished 4th of a 4 team comp.

Ernie Jones comes to Port and helped lift us to a GF where we finish 2nd in 1901 and the Magpie introduced in 1902 season. The 15 seasons between 1901-1915 was the transformation of Port to a powerful team in the league.

5 Flags - 1903, 1906, 1910, 1913, 1914 (udefeated) [ Norwood 3, NA 2 WA 4 Sturt 1]
8 GF's. - 1901, 1904, 1905, 1907, 1909, 1911, 1912, 1915
2 3rd's - 1902, 1908 * finished minor premiers in 1902 but forfeited the 1v3 SF because we objected to umpire Kneebone being appointed as the umpire for the SF.

World War I changed the club and its dominate period ended. Whilst the club didn't win as many flags of the 1950-1965 era or 1988-1999 era it still was a dominate era that set Port up.

1901-1915 13 Grand Finals in 15 seasons, 5 premierships Consecutive GF's 1903-07, 1909-15

1950-1965 12 Grand Finals in 16 seasons, 10 premierships Consecutive GF's 1953-59, 1962-65
1950-1968 15 Grand Finals in 19 seasons, 10 premierships Consecutive GF's 1953-59, 1962-68

1988-1999 10 Grand Finals in 12 seasons, 9 premierships Consecutive GF's 1988-90, 1994-99

Ernest (‘Ernie’) Jones was a remarkable all-round South Australian sportsperson around the turn of the 19th century. Like Hawke, Jones played only season of league football for Port Adelaide in 1901, finishing with 19 games for the Magpies; but he was instrumental in helping Port rise from last place on the premiership ladder in 1900 to runner-up to Norwood in the 1901 Grand Final, which was Ernie’s last game of league football. In the 7 seasons prior, Ernie played in four premierships for South Adelaide and then captained North Adelaide to its first-ever premiership in 1900 (against South!).

Nicknamed ‘Jonah’ and born in Auburn in South Australia’s Mid North, Jones was also a firebrand right arm fast bowler who played 19 tests for Australia from 1894-5 to 1902 and took 64 test wickets at an average of 29.01. His best bowling figures in an innings were 7/88 and in a match were 10/164. Jones made his test debut against England in Sydney in December 1894. He went on three Ashes tours of England in 1896, 1898 and 1902. In his first match on English soil, he played for the Australian touring team against a Lord Sheffield X1 at Sheffield Park in Surrey. Folklore has it that Jones had the famous England batsman WG Grace ‘dancing around the crease’ with his first three balls, and then his fourth ball saw Grace throw his head back, with the ball ‘parting his beard’ on the way through to the keeper!

Thought I would do a chart of Port's 1st and 2nd places and separate them from Grand Finals won and Lost by opponent. 1877-1897 was the League system like the EPL that you win flag by finishing top at end of season and only have a final if 2 teams ended up with the same points as we had in 1889 when Norwood beat Port;
1. 1889: Norwood 7 goals def Port Adelaide 5 goals at Adelaide Oval

Then for some stupid reason between 1923 and 1926 inc if a side finished 2nd and didn't make the GF, they were given 2nd spot and that's why there are 2 seconds after 1897 under other. See full explanation in post 44 above. See Post 44 and 36 for reconciliation of places to Matthew Agius's list of 62 grand finals Port has played in with a 33-29 record.

1950-1981 32 seasons, 22 Grand Finals, 14 Flags, 8 lost Grand Finals

1945-1999 55 seasons, 35 Grand Finals, 23 Flags, 12 lost Grand Finals

1901-1939 39 years, 23 Grand Finals, 10 Flags, 13 lost Grand Finals + 2 x 2nd placings by SANFL system
Take out 3 years in WWI competetion was suspended in 1916,17 and 18.

1901-1939 36 seasons, 23 Grand Finals, 10 Flags, 13 lost Grand Finals + 2 x 2nd placings by SANFL system

The 1901-1939 years vs the 1950-81 years are similar in terms of Grand Finals made, but lost more of those close GF's.

Been looking at the past grand finals stuff since we won the Second Semi Final a couple of weeks ago.

That 1950-81 period was unbelievable. Never went 4 years without making a GF. Only missed GF's in 1950, 52, 60,61, 69,70, 73,74,75, 78

The 1945-1999 only had 1 x 4 year period 1947,48,49,50 and 2 x 3 year period 1973,74,75 and 1985,86,87
