For Mr Ripper or anyone else that knows:

- did Drummond play / how did he go?

- is Collier actually being played as a full back recently? how is he going? do you think he or anyone else in the reserves would be worth the punt at replacing Maguire in the seniors for the rest of the season?

Drummo played the full game and as the match report said, was quiet. Was just feeling his way, I thought. Hopefully this time they'll let him find form before bringing him back.

TC has done well at FB of late, but is playing that position more out of necessity than anything. Would struggle against monsters at AFL, I'd predict.

The ressies are back out at their second home at Sherwood tomorrow and tackle Moaningside. And these are they:

B: M Dillon T Collier B Harvey
HB: M Golby M Maguire R Newell
C: J Drummond J Green J Polec
HF: R Bewick B Retzlaff M Austin
F: R Buntain B McCulloch D Barry
R: B McCauley C Bartlett R Harwood
IC: C Carseldine M Green A Kitching C Hudghton S Clarke C Bernasconi J Freeman

If yer wondering where Windscreens is... one guess.

Aah, interesting selection at CHB too.

88 points apiece. Cal dropped a mark at CHF right on the siren. Side dropped bundle in third quarter but fought back well in the last. Harwood great and Retzy in good form.

Morningside are turds.

So it was a draw?? That's bad considering we were more than 20 points infront.

We are last on the ladder and the Panthers are a match-hardened team. What do you expect?

The Lions began brightly, with Ryan Harwood setting the standard in the midfield and maintaining it all day.

He collected 36 possessions and gave the Lions great drive alongside young Western Magpie Alex Kitching, who continued his fine output at NEAFL level and capped his game with three goals.

....

Richard Newell was also strong around the football, while Tom Collier gave great dash from defence.

Josh Drummond was also solid. “He looks pretty close to a senior return,” Clarke said. “Most of our guys actually played okay – it was a pretty good effort collectively.”

More good news for the Lions was a solid display by Callum Bartlett and a strong performance by Mitch Golby.

Close, but no cigar.
Bartlett should get a look in sometime this year, but I hope they don't rush Drummo.

Watched all the game. A very creditable effort against a side that, shall we say, puts almost as much effort off the ball as into the game as such. Dirty would be a more direct way of putting it.

This is where the goal umpires, who have vision of the whole field, should come into play with a quiet word to the field umpires.

All of the Lions senior coaches were there as far as I could tell.

Great game from Harwood. More endeavour from both our rucks but still short of the mark, skill-wise.

Not sure about Polec- may make the grade, but I am pretty confident in saying a Dyson Heppell he ain't. Collier competent down back. Retzlaff tried hard. Golby busy but makes critical errors regularly.

Bartlett very busy- has very quick hands and bores in hard. Will be a real asset, perhaps even may make an appearance this year. Drummond still well short of a gallop, but needs must.

That is a big bloody concern considering it is only the NEAFL. I appreciate Gaff wasn't available at our pick, but we really needed to get Polec's pick right, and while it is still early days, I'd be lying if comments such as the above and the limited vision I have had of him are not worrying to say the least.:(

Meant to say also- the Sherwood make-up players {Kitching was one and don't know the name of the other bloke] did very well.

Final point- the ball was approximately 0.05m from a Lions player's chest when the final siren went, within scoring range. This may have been the reason many Lions were chatting to the umpires as they went off.

I think Polec will be more suited to the AFL anyway. He seems to be an outside player that relies on lots of space- something he won't be getting in the NEAFL. The blocks, the skills and the smarts of the players around him obviously go up quite a few pegs in the ones which will help a player like him out.

An in and under guy like Harwood is more suited to the lower skill, more congested type play that the NEAFL provides and as such that is reflected in the best.

IMO once Polec gets fitter, stronger and understands what is required of him defensively he will come in and fill a need in the senior side.

The story I've heard, from someone VERY close to the incident was that the umpire was going to award a free, but as the siren then sounded, decided the game was over.

Totally agree, an outside reader of the play should be able to read the skills of the AFL far easier than second guessing ressie players.

Yes I am bias but I believe Polec should be able to make the grade in 2012. But I do hope he is given an opportunity to show us what he has defensively learnt in a few of the remaining senior games.

I will say he has a left foot, and a left foot only.

Quite lightly framed. Trying hard.

Not sure we, or anyone really these days, can afford another outside player who isn't able to contribute to the load factor inside.
