We kicked off last season after a win against the hawks in the pre season. The task to get a win are polls apart. Last season we only had to beat North at Marvel. This season we take on the dual premiers at home without Dale, Sanders, Cody and maybe Sam.

The task looks beyond us, but an honourable loss would be acceptable. Any other team we would be a chance but the lions look head and shoulders above everyone else.

Honorable losses cost us finals last year. We need to smash them.

The big questions are:

1. Where are we drinking piss beforehand to celebrate the debut of the Sellwood? The Pineapple, Norman or the National?

2. Can our starting 18 overcome the controversy of Bevo producing that sh*thouse song - ‘Tooth and Nail’?

Looking forward to heading up next week.

They are clearly premiership favourites at this stage so though slow starters there is no more difficult assignment that Brisbane at home.

In saying that we nearly stole one last year and we do look stronger this season with younger player development.

A great test to begin the year

Brisbane look unbeatable this year. Will be good for us to see what the bench mark is early. Expect to get smashed by ten goals but it might set up our season.

Assuming Darcy and Dale are available this would appear to be the team for the season Opener.

B:Khamis, O Donnell, Baldrick
H:Dale Lobster Bambi
C:Baker, The Bont, Williams
H: Kennedy, Astronaut, Jones
F:Croft, Darcy, West

R:English, Richards, Liberatore

I/C: Hynes, Freijah, Doctor, Emmett, Jacques

Emergency: Selwood, Jacque, Gallagher

The lions are strong in all areas. Their key forwards are probably not their strongest area but their small forwards are very good. Probably Baker and Williams on the wings have a big task on Berry/McCullage or one of the Ashcrofts. Bad luck no Sanders he looked to be in great form.

If Sam plays our forwards look good against a strong backline so do our mids but they also strong there too.

Not expecting a win but hoping for a strong showing.

This is why Sellwood is a must play. Adding him and Budarick will make us far more prepared to handle their smalls and mediums.

I’m not so low on our chances here. Both games last year we had ourselves in very strong positions to win the game (mainly that huge lead in the 1st matchup), but for one reason or another (mainly injury in-game) we lost control. To be fair, this is a major strength of Brisbane’s - their control of the tempo of a game is better than anyone. But I do like our chances to start the season on a high

Yeah Rayner would be a good matchup for Sellwood. Both have plenty of campaigner in them. Could end up being an ugly mismatch if he gets overwhelmed though.

Should've won that last game at the Gabba, probably good to get this game out of the way early, noone will be expecting us to win, good chance to catch them off guard.

Hopefully Darcy is good to go. It will be interesting to see if we roll out a new and improved all-team defensive mindset.

Before a ball has been kicked in anger there is lot of speculation on how the dogs will perform.
There are heaps of opinions on mainstreamand social media, some have us top 4, the majority 6 to 8 and quite few as low as 10th.

We have Kane Cornes saying we have the best list in the comp. We all know this is just to have more ammunition to aim at Bevo. If we go well, he says he should be getting these results. If we are not that well, he can say how poor he is coaching with the list at his disposal.

I think the truth is we have pretty good list with quite a few question marks that will determine how well perform. However, I cannot see how we have the class and depth of Brisbane.

Forgetting the uncontrollable of a bad run of injuries I can see us going well and being top 4 if most of the following players have good seasons

JOD and Buku: They have the potential for big improvement, and we need then to perform in defence.
Arty and Sanders: Arty's speed is a real need, and we need him to play to his ability. Riley to add to midfield depth.
Sam If Sam has a good year he could kick 80 plus goals

Then there is the natural progression of Croft, Hynes, Dolan, Jacques and Sellwood.
.
We live in hope are excited to see how we perform

Tough first beat-up! Really excited, this could really set the tone of our season early. Imagine us winning in opening round against a contender.

Lobb needs to keep Hipwood to his career average to stand a chance.
Out until the middle of the year.

Logan Morris is quality and Ty Gallop is young but they love him at the lions.

Our major advantage is ruck. Timmy looked sharp against the Hawks.

If Tim can drop back the way he did v Hawks through the year it makes a massive massive difference. He’s always been good at the extra tall in the backline but seems to be given instruction to do it more often now which will be a real difference maker IMO. I think we are right in this given their first choice ruck is out and Timmy looks in ripping form. Married life clearly agreeing with the big fella!
