It’s been a really dry summer this year.

Our water tanks have run dry twice, between decent rains, since late spring.

I really do love rain but I fricken hate wet games of footy. We certainly need the rain that is for sure.

This is why bringing the season forward for round zero is daft; if it isn't 32 degrees and 95% humidity, it's monsoonal rain. Play it in late March and finish the year off mid-October.
The concept of round zero has always been to have AFL games in Sydney and Brisbane early when the NRL are playing in America which meant the NRL didn't get a head start on the AFL in NSW and Qld which are still very much predominately Rugby league states. It may or may not work, would have to see the TV ratings and crowd attendances.

The Broncos will play Friday night in Brisbane as premiers, the Lions play Saturday night in Brisbane as premiers. Suncorp stadium seats 52,000 the Gabba and measly 32,000 if they cram them in so the NRL will win attendance. TV ratings, who knows, the NRL does consistently out rate AFL (state of origin and grand final last year) i guess its the popularity of the teams they are playing.

Weather, well as a farmer I can tell you it's been bloody dry in SE Qld this calendar year so far until last weekend we got 100 ml on the Sunshine Coast.

Can't wait to make it to my first game at the Gabba.

Hope this is an OK place to ask for some advice from the locals?
-Left it late to get tickets and paid $110 p/adult for a spot far back on the wing. Is this normal?
-Any good places to go for a feed and drink before the game? (Suitable for family with young child)

On the game, we looked in pretty good nick vs the Suns, probably the best I can remember from recent pre-season games. I reckon we should get the win but expect dogs to put up a good fight. Also looking forward to some laser 50m passes from kiddie, assuming he gets a spot.

Best place for a beer and a feed pre-game is the German club across the road, though it’s honestly busier on game days than it is during Oktoberfest so you’d want to get there as early as you possibly can.

Which, again, if you have the time isn’t an issue because the food is great and the beer is better

I'm just outside Maleny in the Sunshine coast hinterland, I've a large sprinted dam so i'm all good. normal in January and February we get 1500ml of rain, that the same as Tasmania in a year. up until last weekend we were about 100 ml. Got 130 ml last weekend and it looks like a lot more coming this weekend, hopefully it's Sunday and it's a dry game Saturday night.

Forecast has worsened. Every time I've checked this the last week or so it's become worse each time.

Also the BOM forecast was relatively conservative before and saying 6mm. Now starting to catch up to Weatherzone...

Not looking good!

If we do get a game at all it has Cody Curtin written all over it. Big lump of a lad we can send in to bash and crash at stoppages and make a contest long down the line. Will be a slow game ball-movement-wise with ball handling being difficult, so having the extra tall will be no bad thing and in fact his mobility for his size will be a bonus.

We can't afford to just send out our bog-standard best 23 for a dry weather game and hope to be able to possess our way to 4 points. Remember the Geelong game in Round 6 of 2024? This could easily go the same way.

weather.com.au Saturday looks light on but Sunday/Monday appears ominous.
hope it stays that way and Sunday eases up a bit for QLD folks.

Going off recent forecasts we will probably get about 1/3 of the rain forecast.
So 1mm on Saturday, sounds pretty good.

Glad that the weather looks to be ok. Most people and all of the plants will enjoy the rain, it's been a dry summer.

I only ever check the weather on my phone app, figure it’s lifting information from a more trusted source.

As of yesterday evening, and still the same forecast this morning, it’s going to be a wet game.

I reckon a wet game will likely nullify Sam Darcy's height advantage, Naughton too. Will be a super tough opening game and I am beginning to suspect that it may be played in conditions similar to when we hosted Geelong and were trounced in 24?

If there was any benefit in giving Oscar Allan an extra week to recover from his concussion (assuming a very wet game) it could be a good one for him to miss, a Linc McCarthy type may be more useful in such conditions.

And Tim English running around trying to mark.

Probably will be a similar style game to last year at the Gabba which Brisbane were comfortably the better team though inaccurate as usual

I had McCarthy over Coleman all others the same.

BRISBANE

B: Ryan Lester, Harris Andrews, Noah Answerth
HB: Jaspa Fletcher, Darcy Gardiner, Dayne Zorko
C: Jarrod Berry, Hugh McCluggage, Levi Ashcroft
HF: Zac Bailey, Ty Gallop, Cam Rayner
F: Charlie Cameron, Oscar Allen, Logan Morris
Foll: Darcy Fort, Lachie Neale, Josh Dunkley
I/C: Darcy Wilmot, Will Ashcroft, Bruce Reville, Keidean Coleman, Kai Lohmann

Emerg:
Darragh Joyce, Sam Marshall, Conor McKenna, Cody Curtin

Despite missing injured bookends Jack Payne and Eric Hipwood, along with ruck recruit Sam Draper, the Lions will field an extremely strong team to face the Western Bulldogs in Opening Round. Former West Coast captain Oscar Allen will play after being sidelined with concussion during the pre-season, as will veteran Ryan Lester. The biggest question for Chris Fagan is should Noah Answerth be selected after just one VFL practice match? After overcoming a ruptured Achilles tendon, Answerth is the perfect replacement for the departed Brandon Starcevich, but whether he has enough conditioning is the question. Keidean Coleman has likely done enough to regain a place in the 23 after two injury-interrupted years, while Bruce Reville sealed his spot with a magnificent performance against Gold Coast last week. - Michael Whiting

Nothing better than getting to the German club 2 hours before the game and enjoying it. Of course on Easter Thursday you really do want to get there 3 hours beforehand because of all the black and white invaders around.

Welcome back everyone.

I think Michael Whiting has nailed team selection this week. Marshall a little stiff.

I agree about Marshall, but I also think Linc is stiff to miss out in this team.
The way I see it, we have lost three players from our grand final team (Oscar, Starce and Callum)
Allen replaces Oscar so we are left with two spots.
And we have Berry, Kiddy, Answerth and Linc coming back in.
Berry for Marshall is a no brainer
So two of Kiddy, Answerth, Linc and Marshall go out.
Glad I’m not a selector.

Good point. I’d forgotten about McCarthy. I suspect we will see him out on the park if a space opens up. If Gallop and Allen are in form, Hipwood becomes another hard luck story when he is fit to return. Same with Payne if the Andrews, Lester and Gardiner combination is working well in defence. Andrews and Lester are ‘Locks’ and I would love to see Gardiner really make that third tall defender place his own. He was sensational in the Preliminary Final against Collingwood and performed strongly in the Grand Final.

We really do have more depth than I have EVER seen at a football club. Injuries are an unfortunate, but unavoidable part of our game, but there is no side that is more capable of absorbing them than we are. It’s not just that we have a lot of deck chairs in First Class, we have an abundance of ways to shuffle them. Unlike a club like GWS, injuries won’t be our iceberg and we certainly aren’t the Titanic.

Footy is back!

Long time lurker, first post. Love the onset of a new season and AGAIN our jumper has a Gold AFL logo signifying we are the reigning premiers. Funny that, reigning/raining maybe the initial image used in the OP could have been of a Lion Fish and Dog Fish? (i have a file image but not a url, cannot upload. There goes that that option of a funny first post bugger)

LIONS by lots [please]
