Lions v Eagles Sunday 23rd March at 12.10pm AEST (Perth time 10.10am)
First i would like to encourage any posters that have thought of doing a "Preview" please consider having a go.
Just do the preview in your own style.
You can, but don’t have to do it all in one go and then post.
I find it easier to do it on a word document (dlanod suggestion to me way back) over a few days.
This way you can easily change things till ready to post. Then copy and paste to your post when finished.
Then do any adjustments like adding an image, giff anything else that suits your style.
Free word documents are available from Google docs and Microsoft Word
There are still 6 spots available to round 16. Give it a go.

Bring sunscreen, hat and water as more than ½ the crowd will need it.
People in Perth can watch the game while having morning tea.
The Eagles got thrashed by the Suns in Perth and now must travel to The Gabba
No point in going over the recent years' records between the two sides. Lions have been good, Eagles bad.
This should be a guaranteed 4 premiership points to the Lions, but the boys will still have to turn up ready to play
At this early-stage Starch will miss and Lohmann only looks like missing just 1 or 2 games thank heavens.

MY CHANGES

OUT: Fort, Lohmann, Starcevich
IN..: Day, Cameron & Reville (sub).
McKenna was sub last week so he just moves to the defense 7.

POSPONED GAME

I am glad our Geelong game was postponed to round 3.
The way we played against Sydney it would have been hard to get that win against Geelong a week earlier.
Then we would be fronting up to a Swans team with that loss and that could easily have had us down 0-2
Now we should be meeting the Cats with a 2-0 record and i think that makes a difference.

EAGLES

The Eagles main 2 KPF are Allen and Waterman. They kicked an Eagles game high 2 goals each on Sunday. That being 4 of their 7 goals.
Waterman came off in the 3rd quarter so may not get up for the Lions game.
Eagles traded in Graham, Baker and Owies. Graham was their best with Baker and Owies okay.
Reid hardly sighted and Kelly looked a shadow of his Geelong days.
Their defenders got a bit of the footy but that’s because the ball was constantly in that area.
The Suns were just too slick and when you lose these stats below by a big margin you get thrashed.
H/O 77-19, H/O to advantage 20-5
Centre Clearances 16-8
Inside 50’s 67-34
Suns even won the free kicks 20-10

LIONS

We did not play well in the 1st quarter but improved as the game progressed.
Under the circumstances it was a gutsy win in the end.
The Lions story starts again before round 1 got under way. Linc does an ACL, sadly new trade recruit Days father passes away.
Prior to that cyclone Alfred restricted training and the players and family had to deal with that.
We lose Charlie before the game. Lohmann and Starcevich during the game. Still went on to win in a close encounter away from home.
When Fagan says it was a gutsy win, then it is. A few years ago, we don’t win that game.

I think overall we still have a lot of improvement to do before the round 3 Cats game.
This clash gives us a chance to improve match fitness and gameplan before we meet them the following week.

Day comes in for Fort and should relieve a little pressure on Morris, Hippy and Ah-Chee.
With Starch out McKenna's role may change slightly, but we do still have one lockdown defender in Answerth.
Wilmot is pretty versatile, and they might give him a slightly different job to do this week.
Anyone could get that sub spot, but Reville would be a good choice seeing he was named in the VFL trial game bests.
Oscar most likely has little stints in the forward line too. Just to mix it up a bit.
Andrews did not have his usual influence on the game, but he and Payne kept Amartey and McCartin to just 1 goal, so job done.
I originally thought the Eagles would tag Neale but maybe not.
They did not bother in the Suns game and i doubt it would have made any difference to the end score.
Lions' midfield of McInerney, Neale, Dunkley, McCluggage, Will & Levi Ashcroft with Rayner getting a go at some stage.
The Eagles are in trouble just on that line alone.
Berry had a great game. I predict he will be better again this year, so opposition watch out.
Will had a great debut game. Rushed his kicks a bit but so did Will in his early games.
Once he settles in, who is going to replace him and who misses out.
That's a question for another day, as Levi will start on the ground again this week.
Zorko still running around like an Energizer bunny at age 36 moving to the wing/forward area when Fletcher was having an off day.
Great that the coaches made the change. In previous years that may not have happened or taken too long to decide.

How will the game go. We are a 2 goal better side per quarter so 45–50-point win is on the cards. Could be more but will settle for that.

Long range weather forecast 29 C, a few showers under 1mm between 10am-1.00 pm.

The game is not sold out but close. Sales are very good for an Eagles game on a Sunday at midday.
Last Eagles game at the Gabba was Saturday July 1st at 1.45pm crowd 24,843.

Can’t wait to get to the game with my daughter as it will be 178 days since we saw the last game at the MCG on grand final day.

Still on days not Sam, it will be 150 days between when the LNP won the election, and they release the 100-day review recommendations and what the government decides to accept on the 25th of March.

Unveil that premiership flag for the fans. Go Lions.

I agree with Day in for Fort as the forward game time is more important than the backup ruck time. Fort did nothing wrong but dont think he was enough presence up forward.

Cameron in for Lohman is a simple change

Starc replacement is much harder. Answerth can lock down but who is the next cab off the rank for the backline Im not sure. Dev sounded like he played well on the weekend and happy for him to reinvent himself a bit there. Hard to tell who else is in form as the opportunity opens up

There is no real need to bring in a new defender this week. Unless the club decided to make a defender the sub.
We had 8 defense players named from last weeks announced 23-man team. Seven including Starcevich plus McKenna sub.

This week we can go with these players without bringing in a new defender.

B: D.Zorko, J.Payne, R.Lester

HB: N.Answerth, H.Andrews , D.Wilmot

Bench McKenna

McKenna was sub last week so just takes Starcevich place in the 22-man team

Remarkable how far the club has come.

We only got 15,000 at the GABBA for this matchup on a Sunday in 2012 when Polkinghorne put through a torp for the ages (Shoutout McKeever for his long fingernails as well).

Also crazy to think there are 13 year olds that barrack for the Lions who never witnessed the pandemonium at the GABBA but witnessed a flag last year.

Sorry to make some people feel old (Myself included).

Thanks I needed this on a Monday.

There are some on here who went to home games at Brunswick St oval before the Lion's left in 1967, they make me feel old!

Teams usually play 7 man defence so we need another

morsie why do we need another?
The usual 4-man bench has a maximum of 1 defender. So, 6 on the field and one on the bench for relief.

What position clubs choose for the sub is something for each individual team in the competition to decide,

If the opposition team decides to put an extra behind the ball (7th) that's up to them. But when the ball comes out, the Lions have an extra sitting across that wing/center/wing area or a bit deeper. The ball then comes straight back in.
The reverse applies if the Lions do it.
It is up to our coaches to decide if it is hurting us, if so, they may decide to even the numbers up.

Sometimes we do send an extra to defense but most times i don't think we do.
Fagans's wingers are very defensive minded but usually their opponent should follow them and match the numbers.
Unless this is what you mean, the wingers getting back helping out.

When the opposition send an extra player to defense (making 7) it is usually to stop the bleeding.
Teams including the Lions do send an extra back very late in the quarters. For us it is usually Berry, but that does not always work out well either.

Bo Allan played in a WAFL practice match and will push for his debut this week if he gets through training. The draftee could slot into the back six and allow Tyrell Dewar to return to a wing, particularly if Jack Hutchinson is unavailable after sitting out late in the loss to Gold Coast with "awareness". Liam Ryan is also expected to be available after managing hamstring awareness for the past fortnight. The Eagles will confirm their injury issues on Tuesday but are expecting Waterman to be available after being substituted early as a "precaution" following a calf issue. Co-captain Duggan finished the Suns' clash with ice on his left ankle. Ruck Bailey Williams should be discussed this week as an option in the ruck. – Nathan Schmook

The loss of Starcevich and Lohmann from the team that beat Sydney means Chris Fagan will have to do some juggling ahead of Sunday's home opener against West Coast. Cameron will come back in if he passes a fitness test, with untried Will McLachlan a chance to debut (he was an emergency last week) if the two-time All-Australian fails to overcome his calf niggle. Conor McKenna seems a nice fit to move from the sub role into the backline, while Sam Day is also in the mix after missing the Swans game for personal reasons. Bruce Reville, Deven Robertson and Shadeau Brain are among a plethora of options that could come into the 23. – Michael Whiting

You must be like a pig in poo over on the Eagles board this week Briz...
Just lurking.

Lots of doom and gloom over there atm. All the hope and optimism from the preseason evaporated in a half of footy.

I'm not invested in the Eagles, so don't really care if they sink or swim. It's just about how/if they pull themselves out of their current predicament.

Tassie and their access to the best U17's for a couple of years, potential mini drafts, plus 3 compromised drafts could see teams down the bottom stuck there for a long time.

Richmond looking smarter and smarter, loading up in last years draft, plus also holding Norths first round pick this year.

Waterman out is a pretty big loss. He has been very good the last 12 months or so. We play this right and our back line should be able lock down the game pretty well.

Is this the first game against them since the Cameron/Duggan incident? Man that feels like a life time ago

Big loss Lester has struggled playing on genuine talls like him and probably wouldve got the matchup unless we brought Dizzy straight in

Wouldn’t really call Waterman a genuine tall personally, at only 191cms he would be more of a third tall and a good matchup for Lester but JW has good speed and agility which Froggy may struggle with. He has played well on players like Jack Riewoldt and J Cameron before so he is able.

Watermann is a high i50 target in a terrible team merchant. Good player but he's about 20th in my list of most scary forwards in the comp if you include small and medium types.

Fluked an AA year because the selectors hate Joe. Kicked 5 more goals in the home and away (in fairness, played fewer games) but that was just due to incredible accuracy and playing permanent forward whereas Joe was the best forward ruck in the comp.

At least when Larkey got AA in 2023 he kicked 70+ goals - Watermann and McGovern were DEI for Sandgropers.

He is but struggles on those who play as a marking forwards. Waterman, Walker, Fogarty

Cameron is a decent matchup because he plays small. Depends what happens up the field as well
