Ok after the rookie draft Melbourne's 2012 list is finalised and i think its worth looking at our list, make up, ins and outs ect

Here we go,

In - Clark, Taggert, Tynan, Sellar, Couch, Magner, Williams, Sheehan

Out - Wonna, Scully, Warnock, Newton, Maric, Johnston, Mcnamara, Cambell

What do we have?

Ins - 4 talls and 4 smalls

Outs - 3 talls 5 smalls

And this fits with us targeting Clark in the forward line, Sellar in the Backline and to what i will consider project Forwards in Williams and Sheehan, both who have potential.

The smalls, well we lost maric, wonna, Johnston and Scully and mcnamara, one who i think was genuinely a midfielder. We get in 3 genuine mids imo in Taggert, Couch and Magners all with mature bodies to match, and a HBF.

We have added quite alot of size imo, both in Kg's and cm's imo. both in the midfield and KPP.

Last year we lacked ability to win the contested ball and clearances even though we have the best combination in the league in Jamar and Moloney. Neeld has brought in 2 mature body mids form the VFL and a good sized draft prospect. All suggesting we are looking to be more physical at the drop of the ball and the contest in general.

I like the direction we have taken really, bring in midfielders which we lack and talls to provide the structure to play Neelds game plan.

These are my early thoughts, hopefully it starts some discussion.

I think Neeld is trying to create an atmosphere of competition, the young guys will have to earn their games.

However, this doesn't mean that we should be worried our talent will waste away in the VFL.... players like Gysberts, Blease, Tapscott and Strauss will all get their chances.

I think we are in a great position;

Backs:
Talls:
- Frawley, Garland, Rivers, Sellar, McDonald (T), Davis

Smalls:
- Grimes, Bennell, Macdonald, Tynan, Strauss, Bartram (Blease, Tapscott, Nicho)

Mids:
- Moloney, Jones, Bate, Bail, Trengove, Nicholson, Evans, Couch, Gysberts, Magners, Blease, Tapscott, Sylvia, Taggert, Morton, Jetta, Evans (Petterd, Jurrah)

Forwards:
Tall:
- Watts, Clark, Howe, Williams, Sheehan (Fitzpatrick, Martin, Sellar)

Small/Mid:
- Davey, Lawrence, Jurrah, Jetta, Petterd, Dunn

Rucks:
- Jamar, Martin, Gawn, Fitz (Clark)

Now that was off the top of my head so no doubt I've missed a couple; but we look good for talent in all areas of the ground.

The one area we need one or two more genuinely good players in is the midfield IMO.

Hopefully we'll get that from Gysberts, Blease and Tapscott.

Yeah the midfield will look solid for 2013 with Viney and potentially two other first round mids (and we may even have cap space to target a free agent the year after). It's the one area we just need a bit more class in imo.

Skills are very good back and forward.

Could someone explain to me the logistics of free agency?

All I know is you have to have served your club for more than 8 seasons.

Yeah that about covers it from my understanding. So we could be in a position to throw money at an experienced midfielder at a poorly performing club at the time, or someone wanting to come home to Melbourne.

I'm not sure it's really on our agenda, as we just landed Clarke who's a big contract himself (but not that big over the course of the contract obviously).

And we'll have a lot of guys all getting payrises around the same time. But its worth considering either way.

DB went midfielders crazy with his drafting he was after speed & ball carriers but forgot that you need size & strength plus inside players if you want to compete with the best.
Neeld has tried to fill the 'holes' in our list it remains to be seen if he has done that but i think at the very least hes gone the right way about it!

Neeld did what he could in bringing in Couch Magner and Taggert.....also Blease Evans and Nicholson could improve dramatically, so we may yet have a better midfield than last year, only time can tell

I agree this is a key area, once we improve consistently in the midfield we'll start moving up the ladder.

But I think that can mostly be done internally, competition for spots will certainly make blokes work harder. Trenners will only get better being a year old, Bail missed most of last season, McKenzie is our most honest hard worker but still young & will be a year older & I even think Jones has improvement to come that will happen when he gets better players around him. That's not to mention any draftees or players who've just started to get a few games like Blease, Tapscott, Evans.

Correct.

This will hopefully be rectified next year with our three first round draft picks. Whether we trade in or use all three picks in 2012, we must get at least two quality mids who will impact games. If any midfielder presently on our list apart from Trenners rises above B grade status it would be a massive bonus.

People forget this kid is 21. We might not see his best footy until he grows into his body at 25/26.

I think Jones will improve aswell. To put him above say a B+ mid is a pretty hard sell atm but he's been crying out for a decent coach to be something special and his attitude is excellent.

Maybe it's just my bad luck, but I haven't seen him do anything decent in the matches I've watched. Granted, I only see about 40% of our matches, but that's not a good success rate. Morton should really be on his last chance next year as far as I'm concerned. I can't accept the body excuse for him anymore. Needs to show serious development this year or move on.

We will see improvement from Cale next year. But don't expect him to be a world beater in 2012. Think Goddard, Wells, Jobe Watson who all started to play some really good footy in their mid 20's once they developed confidence in their bodies.

This kid has the tools. He just needs a coach who can provide him with the scaffolding to achieve his potential.

Cale has pretty amazing length and reach though, and his endurance WAS good (bad now).

He should be a utility, who can go forward and kick goals.

I could see him as a defensive forward flaker, matching up against the oppositions most dangerous rebounding backman. He can drag them to the square and beat them one out with his strong marking and height, and punish them on the board.

That would be his ideal role imo. But he needs to get his fitness right first, and then work at it. Hopefully Neeld can bring it out of him, as he really lost his way under Bailey.

The Morton of 08 and 09 had excellent disposal (even under pressure), good awareness, speed, excellent endurance and the ability to rack up huge numbers.

You are wrong. He is far, far from slow. And his disposal is very good. It's his decision making at times that can let him down. (This can, and is being worked on.) He is a tall boy, skilled and a good mover. If he reaches his ceiling few will be able to compete with him both in the air and on the ground. We get his body and his confidence to a level where he feels as though he can compete at this level we could have a very good player on our hands.

Way to go writing off a 21 year old who has had issues with injury and confidence.

You said to correct you if you were wrong. I did. He is not slow. He does not have have terrible disposal. Cale has not been great the last year or so but there are reasons for his lack of progress.

And the comparison was made between Cale and those three players only because they were were late bloomers and often maligned at an early age due to a slow start to their careers.

I suggest you heed your own advice.
