Watching the hawks v blues on hd. dowler looks good in back.:thumbsu:

Watch the Freo match as well - he was very good down back and showed he had a good footy brain. Here is another clincher - in most games when he played from the second week he played our win loss ratio was in the positive - he offered the coaching staff some flexibility and they used that flexibility. Beau Dowler is a confidence player and it took 2 consecutive games for him to deliver - I know that this is a flaw in his character as you must always take you chances when they are delivered however when a spectator can see this why cant the experts.

I agree with your summation of Beau. I thought his game vs Port at the MCG was very good and he followed up with some solid efforts in subsequent weeks. He had a quiet game against Melbourne and was dropped 'to work on a few things'. Never really got back from there. I still wonder about that....

I think he gives us flexibility and height, which you pointed out. Personally I can't work it out.... if ever there was a season to give player an extended run in a position it was this season.

The problem was that he was only given a single game in most cases - funny though that the Collingwood game was a second run game and he did all right - in actual fact he even gets mentioned by the press with his goal from Joeys handball and also as being one of the better players. I dont think he played in the Geelong game which was a shame - injury I think

I'm pretty sure he had a run of 3+ games earlier in the season, but was dropped after the Melbourne game.

Stoppages - We have been smashed in some games. Forget Tails and Robbie, time for Bails and Suzie. Add Cyril as an on baller and we have addressed a few problems. It means we have Sewell, Lewis, Sammy, XL, Kennedy and Hodge who could rotate inside.

It means we could trade, Tails, Robbie, Sewell or Lewis. Good bait

Backs we are stuffed. I still think we have only lost two games due to poor defence so it is not a huge issue. Backs just need to be calm and competent with the footy. Laddo, Goo, WhiteX and Suckers can get it done. Gilly and Schoe can make up the numbers.

Forward pressure is another area we need to look at. We need long run. Morto comes to mind but goes missing too easily. Maybe try Tuck up forward.

Cant see a place for Dowler, Thorp, Musto.

With respect, if you seriously think the above defence can make us into a top 4 side, you are kidding yourself. Teams only need to have a little bit of size up forward and we will get smashed. No doubt they can provide run but you actually need to be able to defend

I dont think the Hawks should panic and go forcing trades that we aren't going to get value from. To an A grade ruck or KPD we will have to give up an A+ player, or an A grade to get a B etc.

We are still young and we have addressed our weaknesses thought the draft and should keep going down that path.

We have weaknesses in the Ruck,KDP's and outside mids with pace.

Yet we have drafted 3 rucks in the last 4 drafts, including 2 in the top 25. The potential best has done 2 knees thats just bad luck. BUt we have addressed the issue.

We drafted 2 potential KPD's in the the last draft including our 1st pick. As well as having drafted a tall utility with a top 6 pick in Thorp who could still play back if he can get fit.

We took Rioli who will end up a fast mid in 07 as well.

So If we add maybe say Talia and a couple of quick mids this year we'll be set. Its just going to take time.

If theres a Dawson or Harry Taylor out there going cheap then we should pick them up but theres no point getting bent over because of one bad year. We won the flag 11 mths ago remember.

Agree with all those except Sewell. He's our most consistent midfielder. Definitely in our best 10 players. He has to stay.

Seconded - great post. Alot of people want to throw the baby out with the bath water around here.

About 4 years ago we didn't have any backs, any forwards, any rucks and we had a limited midfield. It is slowly happening people - but it wont happen overnight.

Agree, but I reckon the Hawks have done better than that. Last year there were 19 bottom age kids drafted and the Hawks picked the only 17yo ruckman in 2008, who would certainly be in the first 3 picked in 2009. As with all young talls, it all takes time to get their body right.
