Bored on night shift, so I’ve been looking at our list going forward. All the contract info is from Footywire. If this isn’t correct and the players have resigned, please update this list. Looking at season 2022 we have 22 solid players under contract. But we have 19 coming out of contract in this year. Good opportunity for a cleanout.

2022 season Contracted players
Age in calendar year 2022, oldest first, contract expiry year

Forwards
Cripps (30, 2023 UFA)
Darling (30, 2025 UFA)

Waterman (24, 2023)
Petrucelle (23, 2023)
Allen (23, Expiring)
Cameron (22, Expiring)

Midfielders
Naitanui (32, Expiring UFA)
Shuey (32, Expiring UFA)
Gaff (30, 2024)

Witherden (24, Expiring)

2021 season - Players on expiring contracts
Age in calendar year 2022

The 9 Players I’d Re-sign, oldest first
Re-sign
Hurn (35) Offer a 1 year deal
Redden (32) Offer a 1 year deal for 2022
Sheed (27) Offer a 2 year deal
Duggan (26) Offer a 3 year deal
Rotham (24) Offer a 3 year deal
Brander (23) Offer a 3 year deal
Jameison (22) Offer a 2 year minimum deal
O’Neill (22) Offer a 2 year minimum deal
Trew (20) Offer a 2 year minimum deal, upgrade to main list

Delist
Kennedy (35) Retire
Hutchings (31) Retire/Delist
Vardy (31) Delist
Ah Chee (29) Delist
Nelson (26) Delist/Trade
Jones (24) Delist
Venables (24) Delist
Ainsworth (24) Delist
Foley (23) Delist
Johnson (21) Delist

Re-sign
- Hurn is still needed as the steady head down back and I’d offer him another 1 year deal.
- Redden won’t want to uproot his family chasing a 2 year deal, so I’d only offer him 1 year.
- Sheed is a Restricted Free Agent and his agent might entertain offers to get his contract price up, but I think he’ll stay for a reasonable contract. I’d offer 2 but he’ll want 3 years.
- Duggan’s agent might be up and about as he’s playing well in a contract year. We need to Sign him up for 3 years, maybe 4. That’ll take him through his prime.
- Rotham should be retained on a longer deal, he’s learnt a lot off Hurn the last 2 years.
- Brander should be resigned for at least 2 preferably 3 years at the cheapest rate we can get him for, because he hasn’t proven himself yet. He’s already being talked about over east as a trade target. We need to lock him up so we can trade him later if required.
- Trew, O’Neill & Jameison all are developing well and need new 2 year deals.

Delist/retire -
- Kennedy should be moved aside now to fast track Allen’s development. Allen shouldn’t be sent down back anymore.
- Hutchings is cooked.
- Vardy is easily replaced by Edwards and hopefully Jameison.
- Ah Chee is a spud.
- Nelson doesn’t make our best side when we’re at full strength. List clogger.
- Jones won’t play if Cameron is fit.
- Venables is done too, unfortunately.
- Ainsworth should never have been selected.
- Foley is a nothing type player. Never going to make our best side.
- Johnson has too many people to fight past, not going to make it.

Trades (If I was in charge lol)
- I’d trade Gaff to Melbourne for Trent Rivers and a pick our way. Gaff gets to go to a contender, we get a super talented young West Australian half back/mid & clear cap for Oscar Allen next big pay and other moves.
- Offer a big front load contract to Cripps, now that Gaff’s contract is off the books. If Carlton match, offer Brander + Petrucelle and a pick. If they say no, jog on.
- If the Cripps trade flops, offer Brander to Geelong for Jordan Clark. Unlikely but could be a win win for both clubs.
- Waterman to Gold Coast for Jeremy Sharp.

Basically I'd like to to turn Gaff, Brander and Waterman into Rivers, Clark and Sharp. All young West Australians. We don't need Waterman or Brander, we're too tall as it is. And this is maybe Gaff's last year where his trade value is still high.

I'd pay out Langden and not carry that plodder for another season.

Horrible that we gave him two year contract.
Also on a side note we need to move a lot of staff. It's important that O'Brien our recruitment get moved on. That's where the shake up needs to come from. Our recruitment has been the sole reason we in the situation we in right now. They need to piss off first.

Langdon isnt great but he was a very smart trade. The club knew we need a ready to go player to cover for Cameron, Rioli and poissibly Venables for a season. He may improve but he fills a difficult to play spot short term. No 18 year old could come in and play small forward - from the drafts we had available.

Trading Brander now is a terrible idea. He’s just turning into a league footballer.
I don't want to trade him either. I want him to sign an extension so we at least have the option of trading him. Clark would be a better fit with this group, is just as talented. Brander might request a trade anyway this off-season.

Further to this comment above, I think we need a change of assistant coaches (not head coach - some will disagree I know). Jamie Graham (Future Senior Coach), Daniel Pratt and Adrian Hickmont have all been with the club for some time, and I think we need some fresh blood to come in a challenge the fold, bring in different IP, whilst noting the cap pressures every club has. Assistant Coaches (or consultants) I think we should be looking at
  • Justin Leppitsch - Has gone into media this year (presumably due to cuts), but was a senior coach at lions, and played a big part in Richmond's flags, and players development.
  • Rob Harvey - Collingwood are falling apart, would Rob Harvey improve his career aspirations to be a senior coach (not sure if he still wants this), by joining west coast. Like all on this list highly credentialed
  • Michael Voss - Do we try 2nd time lucky? Is he pushing for a senior job again
  • Dean Soloman - Freo and Gold Coast - when he finished up with suns due to cuts, was sounded out by 8 clubs according to reports. Has taken this year to leave the industry to run his own business and develop in another way (I personally like this a lot - look at don Pyke - different I know, but....)
  • Stephen King - been with doggies for 10 years, time for a change before he puts his hand up for a senior coaching position?
  • Nigel Lappin - Controls midfield and development at the cats, low profile but highly respected.
I'm sure there are a lot of others out there, but think assistant coaches should have a life span of 3-5 years, before you need to bring someone else in. Probably completely wrong, but think a mini clean out/change in the assistants should occur at the end of this year.

Unless they are West Australian, you’re not going to score an assistant coach from interstate to do the same job over here. The only possibility I see from those choices is Soloman

Dean Soloman would be a solid choice.

He has connections here so moving to Perth wouldn't be a big leap.

We all have an opinion, I just disagree with yours re an interstate coach not wanting to relocate. We don't know people's motivations for change, and if you don't ask (we'll never know if as a club we do) we can't categorically say they wouldn't consider a change to West Coast. Easy to say we won't get someone from interstate.......
If you want coaches we could consider that have connections in Western Australia or are from Western Australia here are some below, let me know if you'd be interested in any of these, or feel free to tell me why we can't get them e.g. Schofields kid plays for port, Simon Black is now a Queenslander.

Don Pyke - Swans
Dean Cox - Swans
Ashley Hansen - Dogs
Jarrad Schofield - Port
Mark Stone - Lions
Brent Staker - Lions (AFLW)
Simon Black - Lions (AFLW)
Scott Burns - Crows
Nathan Van Berlo - Crows
Guy McKenna - Coach and Talent Specialist Cricket Victoria
Andrew Swallow - Gold Coast

I have no preference for any of them but it looks like a much more realistic set of options, given that people generally don’t move across the country unless it’s for promotion, pay rise, or to be closer to family.

I'd like Cripps but he's not what we need right now. We need to go to the draft and add to what we have. I think Brander will get better with every game and eventually could become like Cripps.

What's the thought behind trading Brander? He's showing glimpses of potentially being a very special player.
I agree he is. But his natural half forward spot is Darlings role and Jack's not going anywhere for at least 3 years. Waterman is also probably ahead of him for the same role. So instead of playing him out of position, why not trade him while his value is on the up for a young WA talent in Jordan Clark.

Allen, Brander and Ryan are the only truly special talents I see on our list below 25, we shouldn't be trading any of them.

We have some others with potential like Williams and Edwards, but they are talls. There are no midfielders on our list below 25 that could be considered excellent prospects and I don't think there's a list like that in the comp.

As an example Freo have Serong, Cerra, Brayshaw and Young. Its a scary state of affairs in a position that requires the most elite talents.

Sorry mate, this is madness.

Brander is progressing after spending time on ball in the WAFL and is playing further up the ground in the big leagues. He’s not competing with Darling nor Waterman for a position and likely won’t be in the planned future Simpson has for him.

I criticised throwing him around up to this point, but I’m willing to put my hand up and say that JB has exceeded my expectations in his role this year. The cream rises.

What value would we get in a trade for him compared to the potential value he brings to the side? Keeping him now is an absolute no brainer. Possibly the highest ceiling of any youngster on our list whose name isn’t Oscar.

Yeah but highest ceing in what role? I watched all of his under 18 highlights. He played back and forward as a key position. The fact he's skilled and moves well for a 6 foot 5 bloke doesn't mean he's going to turn into Bont.

Yeo at 6 foot 3 could move from half back into the middle and have an impact because he's explosive, genuine speed and attacks the footy hard. He gives away free kicks but I don't care, because he plays with grunt. He's our most important player for those reasons. He would have shut down that St Kilda run with some heavy action at one of the centre bounces.

Natural ball winning players, whether they're inside in and under types or clearance burst blokes are found as teenagers and are usually played in the middle for stints before Colts. He has neither of these attributes. Not saying he's soft but I can't see him ever fighting off blokes for 15 contested possessions a game like Cripps does, who's the same height. We're trying to mould him into that role because of our circumstance with too many talented talls, but it's not his game. He's a lead up high forward.

Cripps age profile lines up with Yeo, Kelly and Sheed. If we could get a bloke like him for a decent price it would take the contested ball load off Yeo and Shuey and we might pinch another flag before Naitanui is retired. Brander is never going to be able to win the ball in congestion like he can.
