Our best? ...really our best boak had 2 decent performances all year one was against a winless gc and the other was against melb...

if an injury plagued boaks 30ish disposals and 2 goals against collingwood dont count as decent then we might as well run a two-aside competition in the afl cause everyone else must be completely shit.

i think you may have massively over-stated 2 decent games a year. try again.

Looking seriously at our list, and contract situation I have us making 10 Forced Changes this year.

7 from the Main List
3 from the Rookie List

I have Delisted/Traded by Force:

Steven Salopek
David Rodan
Simon Phillips
Brett Ebert
Daniel Stewart
Tom Logan
Matt Thomas
Danny Butcher
Jarrad Irons
Daniel Webb

Note: Westhoff and Cassisi saved due to Contracts.

The above changes lose us 1 Main List Defender, 3 Main List Midfielders, 3 Main List Forwards and 3 Rookie Forwards.

Our Draft priorities becomes Midfielders (Especially with Pace), a Key Forward and a Small Forward.

Sorry Porthos, but I'm about 99% sure that Brett Ebert will be given at least a one-year contract next year. I doubt there's a coach on the planet who would have the balls to sack the fan favourite son of his new club's best ever player who has been in decent goalkicking form in recent times before he's even had an offseason at the club.

Logan and Thomas might stay too. If the coach rocks up and thinks 'this mob of softies needs someone to set an example for workrate', then Logan and Thomas might stick around for another year as 'you must be this good to make the AFL side' types. I can handle it if it's only for a year and they're not considered best 22. But (barring improvement, obviously) if they're still on the list in 2014, then something is wrong.

I'm not saying I agree with these decisions (I'd happily dump all three of them), I'm just saying that these are the sorts of decisions somebody who has been from the outside looking in at the PAFC for the last 15 years will make. The cleanout is more likely to focus on the talented but inconsistent types than the hardworking plodder types.

From a fairly reliable source, Ebo will be shopping himself around. Not saying that anything will come of it but have heard that for his own future his management is looking elsewhere for opportunities.

How the events of the last day or so affect this I dont know...

Surely a favourite son who is not up to it is EXACTLY the sort of person you should piss off if you are taking over a club, cleaning the deadwood, and making it your own.

McDermott & McGuinness anyone? Blight knew what was what.

Ebert is an unrestricted free agent - he should be shopping himself around, irrespective of his future at Port Adelaide.

Overrated is his ability...

Had enough of all our players they will escape this whole thing with no penalty...

Boak is not the only one but boak is everyone's wonder boy on here but not mine...

The only one I would reprieve is Shultz and bra bert

I am sitting here watching Tredrea on Open Mike, Chocos message going into 2004 Grand Final "We are quick enough to rip these guys appart" looking over our list, if not many younger guys are let go of, Toumpus and Garlett are at the top of our needs list, speed, speed, speed thanks

Hahaha. He thinks there's another club in the league where he'd get a game. How cute.

Well, maybe the Bulldogs.

Blight was the 1% of coaches. I'd love someone to come in and go full on Blight on the list, but I doubt it'll happen until at least the 2013 off-season.

Keep in mind that unless whoever the new coach is has been watching us reeeeeeeeally closely over the last 5 years, they won't see Brett Ebert as the structure killing fauxcal point (thanks tribey) that he is, they'll just see him as a medium forward with a decent goalkicking record.

Nah bullshit, every assistant coach in the league knows how Brett Ebert plays, they watch video tapes, and tell their players that he doesn't crumb.

Just because someone's a small marking forward doesn't make them a hack. Burton, Giansiracusa, Andrew Walker, Medhurst, Menzel come to mind.

Brett's problem isn't just that he's a small marking forward, his problem is that he actively gets in the way of taller players who are more suited to take the marks that he flies for. I'd love for whoever we bring in to be savvy enough to have already figured that out despite probably not having watched all that much of us over the last 5 years, but if we're being realistic it might take an extended period of watching us play every week for even a good coach to start noticing it.

Primus' misuse of Brett is one of many reasons as to why he got sacked and it stood out like dogs balls on Saturday. And yes, every opposition coach would be aware of Brett's limitations. I would think his future on our list would be far from assured now.

If we're talking about delistings from the main list:

Start with three of Hitchcock/Banner/Phillips/Ebert

and three of Logan/Salopek/Thomas/Rodan

+ help Chaplin pack his bags.

That I would be happy with. If we want to make more cuts we need to replace them with experienced players in FA or the draft.

ild like to add that for all those that hate on westhoff that he is

a) better skilled by foot than the majority of our midfielders.

and

b) when many of our players get held up on the mark he quite often side-steps his opponent.

Too me he has a poor work rate in the game and doesn't influence the contest near enough so I would flick asap

A new coach isn't going to do that much kulling without having any of them played under them

Delist
Phillips
D Stewart
Hitchcock
Webb (R)
Curnrow (R)
Irons (R)
Trade bait/one more year
Rodan
Pfieffer
Banner
Salter
Oshea

There are a couple of articles on the adelaidenow website discussing the quality of our list, with fairly disparaging quotes linked to Andy Collins (not that they are uncalled for). Paul Roos has also passed comment, suggesting that we're a very hard list to gauge because of inconsistency, and using Pearce as an example of this. The rating of our list has Hartlett, Boak and Brad Ebert as B's, a few B-minuses (e.g. Trengove, Broadbent, Schulz) and a long list of "good ordinary players" and unproven youngsters.

As this year's gone on, I've become more and more confused about the quality we have. Certainly, it was evident that under the same football program and coaching framework, the current list was not going to bridge any gaps to making finals in the foreseeable future, and bringing in more first round draft recruits was only going to tease and frustrate us. Injury has clearly held us back and ironically, it's been our most hyped youngsters effected, but development and culture have been just as flawed.

As I see it now, a new coach will need to address the issue of culture and leadership first and foremost and then make the key decision on whether to cut away inconsistent, unreliable performers (Westhoff, Carlile, Chaplin if he's still there, Pearce) or those with consistent effort but average potential (Logan, Thomas, Brett Ebert).

In terms of drafting/recruiting, we could find ourselves with a boom of early draft picks if all of Boak, Jacobs, Chaplin and Pearce look for greener pastures. I don't subscribe to the notion that this will destroy us in the immediate term. Personally, I expect our results next year to take a major step up purely based on the expectation that we get a coach/support staff with much better experience, tactical nous and developmental skills than Primus and his creche of rookie assistants.

I also half expect that the loss of certain players might uncover some real jewels in our list, especially if the departure of Chaplin paves the way for Blee to play the role of third tall defender. From what we're hearing at SANFL level, Blee is a naturally aggressive rebounding player with decent skills and reading of the play. It's the role that Chaplin has tantalised us with for years always taking two steps back for every one step forward. I expect Blee could be a younger, albeit shorter, but better upgrade on Chaplin in that position.

A raft of top 20 draft picks (say we got four for the losses of the four players mentioned plus our top ten pick for finishing low) could see us net a good mix of midfielders (two with outside pace and skill, one a more contested player), a tall defender or forward and a potential match-winner small forward. That wouldn't be a bad predicament to be in, IMO.

Worst case scenario with the above player departures, we'd have a skeleton of a side like this:

B: Jonas/Surjan.......Carlile.......Blee

HB: Pittard..........Trengove........Hartlett

C: Wingard........Brad Ebert.........O'Shea/Pfeiffer

HF: Gray.........Schulz..........Young/Banner

F: Paul Stewart........Butcher........Lobbe

R: Redden......Broadbent.........Moore

Short-term depth: Cassisi, Kane Cornes, Renouf, ? Westhoff

Completely unknown elements: Newton, AhChee

Sure, it looks shaky now but with balanced recruiting and a really competent, improved football program, that side might be able to improve to 9th-12th next year and then start reaping the rewards come Adelaide Oval.

Westoffson's best is good enough, he has no ability to produce this regularly i dont mind if he is rissoled immediately!

PS Cassisi should hand the captaincy in end of year!
