Renouf is a better ruckman than Lobbe. At least Renouf is capable of getting a solid amount of hit outs in a game. Lobbe might be fit enough to run all day but that doesn't matter if every time you get near the ball you fumble it. I'm looking forward to Renouf this year with a preseason under his belt.

You can't judge how good a ruckman is solely by his hit outs. Sure, Lobbe is not great as a tap ruck, but you need to look at how he can develop his game around the ground. For instance, Sandi dominates HOs but Freo rarely won clearances with him. However Sandi also can take a good grab and is decent with a handball in contested situations, adding to his value as a ruck.
If Lobbe can lift his workrate and start taking some nice grabs around the ground, a kick behind play, then he could become a really valuable second ruck.
I have no problem with keeping Renouf, Lobbe and Redden all on the list (especially considering how often rucks go down with injuries) however I think with all this we really have no room for DStew who has shown the least in the ruck of all of them, and has shown very little up forward also.

Renouf, when fit, is a more than capable ruckman. The issue is 'when fit'. Hopefully that knee comes good or we've wasted another second round selection.

We don't need Giles now. We have enough ruckmen in Redden, Renouf and Lobbe as being capable of playing right now. We need to look at another young project ruckman if Curnow is not considered good enough to come good.

Would have picked him up after his good year in the SANFL but Redden and Lobbe will do the job from next season..Renuof has done his role well ..we are covered for Rucks unless an outstanding prospect Grundy is still there with our 1st pick ? I have an open mind on that

While we certainly don't have our ruck stocks sorted, I'd say they've shown enough between the three of them that we should be fine once Red and Lob get a little more experience. No way we should be using our first pick on a ruck, no matter how good. I'd struggle to justify a second pick on one too. We need a quick midfielder that can play deep forward and a KPD far more urgently.

Some may think me callous, but we probably need to start thinking about how JMac is replaced on our list.

I hope the AFL see this as a situation where we need to be compensated ............ fairly.

My proposal is this.

Prior to the National Draft we should be given a single pick to choose any player, age 22 or above, not on an AFL senior, rookie, NSW development list.

It does not compromise the draft, which will be all 18 year olds for the 1st few rounds, plus it is fair that the age profile of our list is maintained.

Please don't start having a go at me for thinking of this situation, we have to start moving forward at some stage, I'm not sure when that should be, but there is my proposal.

Given we got him the PSD for nix, I don't see any compensation being forthcoming at all.

And yeah, I wouldn't want the club to be asking for compensation, because if a hint of that got out, it'll get blown out of all proportion.

It feels horrible talking about him like this, but John McCarthy was a PSD pick a year ago. From a purely list-management perspective there's really no reason we should be compensated with anything more than the late draft pick we'll get to fill the spot now opened up on our senior list, seeing as McCarthy was drafted with our final pick last year.

From a list management perspective, the only thing it might affect is the 'AFL discretion' priority pick.

Perhaps we will get an additional PSD pick after our current first round one.

im happy to run around with lobbe/redden/ renouf next year as well. im still not sold on lobbe/ renouf being anything other than decent/ average rucks yet but they both had limited pre-seasons last year so might have something more to show us. lobbe definately has potential but thats never been enough in this game. one thing ive never liked is although we had one of the most aggressive ruckmen as our coach our rucks are some of the least aggressive i can remember. it is a combative position. they need to be of that mindset. i remember luke darcy saying something awhile back when they were talking about making the centre circle smaller to reduce the rucks run and jump, he said he loved the gladiatorial nature of the centre bounce. thats a damn hard thing to "train" into a guy. they either have that or they dont. remember brogan? gladiator comes to mind. one of very few to turn in around from being a bit of a soft player to a very aggressive ruckman.

i too would like to see us add another young 18yr old prospect now as they take awhile but in this draft its pretty much grundy > light years> then rookie prospects at best.

i also agree d.stewerts time has gone. re-rookie him at most. such a pity.

Anyone know how Bolger has gone? Was on so many Phantoms last year, i thought he would've got a rookie gig somewhere and he didn't get picked up

I get the distinct feeling that the AFL refuse to release their formula for calculating concessions/priority picks so that they can use a fair bit of judgement based on an individual case. Given we've missed finals since 07, and have not had the opportunity to replenish our stocks appropriately due to compromised drafts, not to mention the tragic loss of one of our younger players, I think the AFL may step in and give us a PP or at least give us very good compensation on any free agent trades.
In the case of McCarthy, as tragic as his death is, I think this doesn't warrant any special compensation in terms of players, i.e. it's the same as a player retiring.

More so than that, if a player gets a career ending injury - nothing is given to the club

Giles - I think GWS are worried he'll be found out next year for being a bit of a dinosaur ruck and a guy who cant run out a game. Not fussed either way and don't think he will keep his form up next year. The Crows might take him as back up to Jacobs, not sure we need him.

Essendon wont let Gumbleton go for peanuts if he is over his injury problems.

have we really come to the conclusion we have lost pearce? Any news or rumours?
That would be a huge blow
Doubt it but if he is leaving we need to make sure we get a really good deal out of it. Match any offers and make teams trade for him.

I was surprised that he didn't get picked up last year, but no way now. Has been playing in the reserves and not particularly standing out either.

agree. im not sold yet he is going anywhere but if it is the case do not let him walk. he is a restricted free agent for a reason. we are not hamstrung in any way and can play it the way we want.

What's the story with Lynch from West Coast? Sorry if this has been covered already but I heard somewhere he is out of contract and is a chance to be dropped this week.

Surely he wouldn't be a bad get. We need a big key forward.

Dropped or rubbed out?
